Category 2 Water Aging Toward Category 3 Clock Vs Condition Decision Tree

Why this matters

Water category is not frozen at the moment of loss; it deteriorates with time, temperature, and what the water sits in contact with. A clean appliance discharge that starts as Category 2 can age into Category 3 when it sits warm for two or three days, feeds on organic soil, and grows a microbial load. The mistake crews make is treating the original category as permanent and drying-in-place materials that have crossed the line into Category 3, which means antimicrobial cleaning, more aggressive removal, and a different containment posture. The opposite mistake is reflexively calling everything Category 3 to be safe, which inflates scope and gets rejected on review. The standard does not give you a clean clock; it gives you condition criteria plus time and temperature as accelerators. Reading the actual condition is the job.

Symptom presentation

  • Source was a known Category 2 origin (washing machine overflow, dishwasher discharge, sump backup of relatively clean water, toilet overflow with urine but no feces).
  • Loss is now 48 to 72 hours old and was not addressed at onset.
  • Standing water or saturated materials sat at room temperature or warmer.
  • Odor has shifted from a damp smell to a sour or sewage-like smell.
  • Visible biofilm, sliminess, or discoloration on materials in contact with the water.

Quick checks before classifying

  • Identify the original source category. A clear plumbing supply line is Category 1; gray water is Category 2; sewage, ground surface water, or any water with feces is Category 3.
  • Establish time since loss and the temperature the water sat at. Warm and old pushes a Category 2 toward Category 3.
  • Inspect contact materials. Water that has been sitting in carpet pad, drywall, or organic debris has had a food source and an incubation environment.
  • Smell and look. Sour/sewage odor, biofilm, and discoloration are condition indicators of microbial amplification.

Isolation tree

Step 1: Category 2 origin, addressed within roughly 24 to 48 hours, cool, no biofilm or odor shift.

  • Treat as Category 2. Clean, antimicrobial where appropriate, dry salvageable porous materials per the Category 2 protocol.

Step 2: Category 2 origin, 48 to 72 hours, warm, sour odor and biofilm developing.

  • Reclassify to Category 3. The microbial load has amplified to where the water is now grossly contaminated by condition.
  • Porous materials in contact (carpet, pad, drywall wicked zone) are removed, not dried in place.

Step 3: Category 2 origin, contained to non-porous surfaces only, cleaned promptly.

  • Hard, non-porous surfaces that were cleaned and disinfected can stay if the condition criteria are met after cleaning.

Step 4: any origin, sewage or ground/surface water, or visible fecal contamination.

  • Category 3 from the start regardless of clock. Full Category 3 protocol: containment, PPE, remove affected porous materials, antimicrobial, validate.

Confirming diagnosis

Document the three drivers: original source category, elapsed time, and temperature, plus the condition evidence (odor, biofilm, discoloration). The category is the higher of what the origin and the condition support. A Category 2 origin that has visibly amplified is Category 3 by condition, and that determination drives the rest of the job. Photograph the biofilm and discoloration and note the timeline; reclassification from 2 to 3 must be defensible because it changes scope, PPE, and disposal. If the materials are porous and in contact, the condition test usually settles it: amplified gray water in carpet pad after several warm days is not salvageable.

Remediation

  • Confirmed Category 2: clean, apply antimicrobial to remaining materials per label, dry salvageable porous materials, validate.
  • Reclassified to Category 3: establish containment, technicians in appropriate PPE, remove affected porous materials and dispose, clean and disinfect remaining structural surfaces, apply antimicrobial, dry, then verify cleanliness before reconstruction.
  • Borderline cases: when condition is ambiguous, document the higher classification and the basis. The cost of treating an aged Category 2 as Category 3 is far below the cost of a contamination callback.

Category 3 work changes the safety and disposal posture, not just the price line. Crews need appropriate respiratory and skin protection, the area needs containment to prevent cross-contamination, and removed materials are handled as contaminated waste. Drying Category 3 porous materials in place to save them is outside the standard and exposes occupants to a microbial hazard.
