Residue On Surface: Silt vs Sewage vs Mineral Decision Tree

Why this matters

After the water recedes it leaves behind residue, and the residue type is a direct read on the water's source and category. Silt and organic debris point to floodwater that carried ground sediment. A greasy, foul biological film points to sewage. A white or off-white crystalline crust points to dissolved minerals (efflorescence or evaporated supply water). Each tells a senior tech something different about contamination, cleaning method, and whether porous materials can be saved. Misreading mineral efflorescence as a contamination band can over-scope a clean loss; missing a biological film under a dusting of silt can leave a Category 3 hazard untreated.

Symptom presentation

  • Silt residue: a fine, gritty, tan-to-brown deposit, sometimes with leaf litter, sand, or organic debris. Settles in a band below the high-water line and in low spots. Indicates floodwater or ground-surface water.
  • Sewage residue: a greasy, dark, foul-smelling film, sometimes with visible biosolids or toilet-paper fibers. Sticky rather than gritty. Indicates Category 3 wastewater.
  • Mineral residue: a white-to-gray crystalline or powdery crust, often on masonry, concrete, or at the edge of an evaporation line on drywall. Indicates dissolved salts left by evaporating water (efflorescence on masonry, mineral scale from supply water).

Quick checks

  1. Touch and wipe-test (gloved). Gritty and dry-ish points to silt; greasy and sticky points to sewage; crystalline/powdery that may fizz with mild acid points to mineral salts.
  2. Smell. Foul/fecal points to sewage; earthy/muddy points to silt; odorless points to mineral.
  3. Locate the deposit. A band below a tide line with debris points to floodwater silt; a film around drains/fixtures or spread across a floor points to sewage; a crust on masonry or a powdery line on drywall points to mineral.
  4. Cross-check with water clarity and source if the loss is recent; residue corroborates but does not replace source ID.

Isolation tree

  • Gritty tan/brown deposit with organic debris in a band below the high line. Branch: floodwater silt, Category 3. Remove porous materials below the line, HEPA/clean non-porous, disinfect.
  • Greasy dark film, foul odor, biosolids present, around drains or spread on floor. Branch: sewage, Category 3. Full biohazard protocol; remove porous, clean and disinfect non-porous, deodorize after cleaning.
  • White/gray crystalline crust on masonry or concrete, no odor. Branch: efflorescence (dissolved building salts carried to the surface by moisture). Not a contamination event in itself; indicates the assembly was wet and is now evaporating. Confirm the moisture source and dry the assembly; brush/clean the salt after drying.
  • Powdery white line on drywall at an evaporation edge, no odor. Branch: mineral scale from evaporated water, often clean supply water. Low contamination concern; clean cosmetically after drying.
  • Mixed residue (silt over a greasy film, or salt over silt). Branch: treat as the most contaminated layer present; floodwater that also carried sewage is Category 3 regardless of the silt on top.

Confirming diagnosis

  • Residue confirms category alongside source and clarity, not by itself. Per S500, category reflects source and contamination at assessment; a gritty silt band with organic debris and a documented floodwater source confirms Cat 3.
  • Distinguish efflorescence from a contamination residue: efflorescence is salt migrating out of masonry/concrete as it dries, is odorless, and re-appears after cleaning if the assembly is still wet. It is a moisture indicator, not a contaminant. Per ASTM context on masonry moisture, persistent efflorescence means the assembly has not reached dry standard.
  • Confirm biological residue when in doubt by the combination of greasy texture, foul odor, and a wastewater source; sampling is the IEP's role if the determination drives a clearance dispute.
  • Document the residue type, location, and resulting category and cleaning method in the file.

Remediation

  • Silt (floodwater): remove and bag porous materials below the contamination line, HEPA-vacuum and clean non-porous surfaces of grit, then disinfect. Dry the structure to standard.
  • Sewage: biohazard PPE and containment, remove and bag porous materials, clean and disinfect non-porous, deodorize after cleaning, restore any dry traps.
  • Mineral/efflorescence: the residue itself is not the problem; find and dry the moisture source feeding it. Once the assembly reaches dry standard and efflorescence stops re-forming, brush or wash the cosmetic salt deposit.
  • Re-inspect after drying; recurring efflorescence means residual moisture, while recurring biological film means an unremoved contamination source.

A greasy, foul biological film (sewage) or a silt band carrying organic floodwater debris is Category 3 contamination. Use respiratory protection, gloves, eye protection, and protective clothing; establish containment; remove and bag porous materials; and follow OSHA bloodborne-pathogen and S500 Cat 3 protocols. Do not dry-brush dried sewage or silt residue without HEPA controls; it aerosolizes contaminants.
