Why this matters
On arrival to an active or recent loss, the first job is not to set air movers, it is to find and stop the source, because water still arriving defeats every dryer you place and water category is set by where the water came from. The three usual suspects behind an interior loss are a pressurized supply line, a gravity drain line, and an appliance, and they behave differently: supply pushes clean water continuously under pressure, drain releases gray or worse water only when something upstream is used, and an appliance can do either depending on whether the leak is on its fill, its drain, or its tub. Isolating the right one first stops the bleed, fixes the category determination, and prevents the embarrassing call-back where you dried a chamber while the supply was still weeping behind the wall.
Symptom presentation
The crew sees standing or wicked water with a flow pattern: a steady spreading pool that does not stop suggests a pressurized supply; intermittent wetting that appears after a sink, tub, washer, or toilet is used suggests a drain; water localized at a dishwasher, washing machine, water heater, refrigerator line, or under-sink connection points at that appliance. The water's clarity and odor add evidence: clear and odorless leans supply (Category 1), gray and soapy or food-laden leans drain or appliance discharge (Category 2), and foul or sewage-laden leans a sanitary drain backup (Category 3).
The behavior over time is more diagnostic than the snapshot. A pressurized supply leak is relentless and grows whether anyone is home, because the line is under house pressure around the clock, so the pool that is visibly larger every time you look is almost always a supply failure. A drain leak is event-driven: it wets only when wastewater passes the failed joint, so the floor may be dry on arrival and re-wet the moment a fixture upstream is run. An appliance can mimic either, leaking continuously from a pressurized fill connection or only during its drain phase, which is why isolating the appliance and cycling it through fill and drain separately is the cleanest way to pin which side failed.
Quick checks
- Watch the water. Continuous flow with no fixture running points to pressurized supply; flow only on fixture use points to drain.
- Shut the main supply and observe. If wetting stops, the source is on the pressurized side; if it continues only when fixtures run, it is a drain or appliance discharge.
- Run each appliance and fixture one at a time and watch the wet zone for the one that reproduces the leak.
- Read clarity, odor, and category indicators to separate clean supply from gray or black drain water.
- Check the obvious connection points first: supply stops, braided lines, P-traps, appliance fill and drain hoses, water-heater fittings.
Isolation tree
- Branch 1, water flows continuously with all fixtures off AND stops when the main is shut: pressurized supply line. Highest urgency; it will not stop on its own. Close the local stop or main, then dry.
- Branch 2, wetting appears only when a specific fixture is used AND water is gray or soapy: drain line on that fixture. Stop using the fixture, repair the drain, treat as Category 2.
- Branch 3, water localizes at an appliance AND reproduces when that appliance runs: appliance source. Determine fill (clean) versus drain (gray) side to set category, then repair or disconnect.
- Branch 4, foul odor AND sewage indicators AND backup behavior: sanitary or sewer drain, Category 3. Stop use, implement biohazard protocol before any drying.
- Branch 5, no interior plumbing reproduces it: re-examine for an envelope, roof, or below-grade source rather than continuing to chase plumbing.
Confirming diagnosis
Confirm by isolating one system at a time the way a leak detector does. Pressurize-test the supply side: shut the main, watch whether wetting halts, then re-pressurize and watch for the bleed to resume. Static-test the drain side by filling and holding the trap and watching for seepage, and reproduce appliance leaks by cycling the unit through fill and drain phases while metering the wet zone. The source is proven when one isolated action makes the wetting start or stop on command. Pair the mechanical isolation with category indicators so the file records both the source and the category determination, since the same physical leak can be Category 1 from a supply line or Category 2 from an appliance drain.
Remediation
Stop the highest-urgency source first: a pressurized supply gets the local stop or main closed immediately because it never self-limits, then drains and appliances follow. The plumbing repair is a separate trade scope that must precede or run alongside drying, and the structure cannot be released until the source is corrected and verified. Once stopped, set water category from the confirmed source and clarity, scope the wetted area, which is often larger than the visible pool, and dry to standard. For a Category 3 sanitary source, do not dry until contaminated materials are removed and the area is cleaned per protocol. Document the isolation steps, the confirmed source, the category basis, and the repair verification so the carrier sees a stopped, categorized loss rather than an assumption.
A confirmed sanitary-sewer or sewage backup is Category 3 (blackwater). Do not begin drying or run air movers across contaminated material until porous affected materials are removed and the area is cleaned and decontaminated. Wear appropriate PPE (gloves, eye protection, and respiratory protection per the exposure) and follow S500 Category 3 procedures; running airflow over blackwater can aerosolize pathogens.
