Hard-Water Stain Returns Only Near Sprinklers After Restoration: Decision Tree

Why this matters

You restored stained glass with an acid or cerium-oxide treatment, the panes came out clear, and weeks later the stain is back, but only on the panes the lawn sprinklers hit. Every other restored pane stays clear. That single fact tells you the restoration held and the source is ongoing irrigation overspray depositing fresh minerals. If you treat it as a failed restoration you will re-polish glass that is fine and the stain will return again because the cause was never addressed. If you read the sprinkler pattern, the fix moves to the irrigation, the customer, and a maintenance plan, and your restoration warranty stays intact.

Symptom presentation

Hard-water stain (a cloudy, etched-looking mineral film, sometimes with visible spray-pattern arcs) reappears on lower panes within reach of sprinkler heads. The staining often shows a fan or stripe shape matching the spray throw. Panes above the spray line or on elevations the sprinklers do not reach remain clear. The film resists plain water and squeegee.

Quick checks

  • Map the stain against the irrigation. Stand where the sprinkler heads are and note throw direction and height. If the returned stain footprint matches the spray arc, the source is irrigation.
  • Test water hardness if you can sample the irrigation supply. Well water and many municipal supplies run high in calcium and magnesium; even a brief daily wetting bakes minerals onto sun-heated glass.
  • Check whether the stain is a deposit or true etch. Wet the pane and look at a low angle. A removable mineral deposit will show some improvement when wet; a true etch (glass corrosion from repeated mineral cycling) stays cloudy wet and dry.
  • Confirm the restored finish underneath is intact: clean a small area aggressively and see if you reach clear glass quickly. Quick clearing means the restoration is fine and the overlay is fresh deposit.
  • Note how fast the stain returned. Days to a couple of weeks of daily sprinkler contact is consistent with fresh deposition; a stain present the morning after restoration was never fully removed in the first place.

Isolation tree

  1. Returned stain footprint matches sprinkler arc, other panes clear: source is irrigation overspray. Go to step 2.
  2. Wet-test the stain. Improves when wet, clears with mild deposit-removal: it is fresh mineral deposit on top of good restored glass. Go to Remediation, deposit path.
  3. Stays cloudy wet and dry, resists mild removal: repeated mineral cycling has begun re-etching the surface, or your original restoration did not fully reach clear in this zone. Go to step 4.
  4. Aggressively clean a test patch. If you reach clear glass with reasonable effort, the etch is shallow and re-restorable; the recurrence rate just outran the cleaning interval. If you cannot reach clear, the original restoration under-corrected this pane. Either way go to Confirming diagnosis.
  5. Footprint does NOT match sprinklers and stain is everywhere: this is not a sprinkler problem; reassess for an overall water-source or restoration-coverage issue, which is a different tree.

Confirming diagnosis

  • Fresh deposit over good glass: confirmed when the wet-test improves and a single deposit-removal pass restores clarity. The glass is fine; only the maintenance cadence and the irrigation are the issue.
  • Re-etching from cycling: confirmed when the surface stays cloudy regardless of moisture and requires mechanical or cerium-oxide work to clear, and the rate of return tracks how long the glass sits wet each day.
  • Under-corrected original restoration: confirmed when an adjacent never-sprayed pane is glass-clear but the sprayed pane never fully cleared, distinguishable from recurrence because it was cloudy from the day after restoration, not weeks later.

Document the wet-test result and a photo of the spray footprint so the diagnosis is defensible if the customer disputes the warranty. A side-by-side photo of a never-sprayed restored pane that stayed clear next to a sprayed pane that re-stained is the single most persuasive piece of evidence that your restoration held and the irrigation is the cause.

Remediation

  • Address the source first: the customer must adjust sprinkler heads to stop wetting the glass, swap to drip near the building, or change run times so glass is not hit. Without this, any re-restoration will fail again.
  • Fresh deposit: remove with an appropriate mineral deposit treatment, rinse with pure water, and dry. Do not re-restore glass that is structurally clear.
  • Light re-etch: re-polish with cerium oxide or re-treat per your restoration method, then protect with a sealant if the source cannot be fully eliminated.
  • Set a maintenance interval. If the sprinklers cannot be fully redirected, schedule recurring cleaning frequent enough to remove deposits before they cycle into etch.
  • Scope your warranty to exclude damage from irrigation overspray going forward, in writing, since it is an external ongoing source outside your control.
  • Consider a sacrificial protective coating on the affected panes if the customer cannot fully redirect the sprinklers; it slows deposition and buys a longer maintenance interval, but it is a delay tactic, not a substitute for stopping the overspray.

Acid-based hard-water and mineral removal products are corrosive. Wear chemical-splash goggles and acid-resistant gloves, ventilate, never mix with bleach or ammonia products, and follow the Safety Data Sheet for the specific product. Protect frames, anodized aluminum, and landscaping below from runoff. Test an inconspicuous corner before treating a full pane.
