Pure Water Vs Traditional Method Efficiency Math

Why this matters

Owners who switch from traditional squeegee to water-fed pole (WFP) on the wrong job lose money. Owners who refuse to switch when the math says they should also lose money. The decision is not religious - it is throughput math, set-up time, and risk-of-callback math. This article gives the productivity ratios that hold across published IWCA training data and your own field-test method to confirm them on your routes.

What "efficiency" actually means

Efficiency in window cleaning has three components, and any honest comparison must measure all three:

  1. Per-window contact time - seconds from brush-down to lift-off.
  2. Setup / break-down time - ladder up, ladder down, cart roll, hose coil.
  3. Callback rate - percentage of jobs that get a phone call back about spotting, streaking, or missed panes.

A method that wins on per-window time but loses on setup (or vice versa) only pays off when the route shape favors it.

Per-window contact time

Published industry training data and IWCA-aligned field measurements consistently report:

  • Traditional pole-and-squeegee on accessible ground-floor glass: 30 to 60 seconds per pane including detail.
  • WFP on accessible ground-floor glass: 15 to 35 seconds per pane.
  • Traditional ladder work for second-story residential glass: 90 to 150 seconds per pane including ladder reposition.
  • WFP for the same second-story glass: 25 to 45 seconds per pane.

The biggest delta is on second-story. Ladder reposition kills traditional throughput. WFP delivers 3x to 4x productivity on the second story because there is no ladder move.

Setup math

WFP setup is heavier than traditional. A typical configuration:

  1. Hook truck-mounted tank or roll-out cart to the hose bib.
  2. Run inlet test (15 to 30 seconds for TDS read).
  3. Deploy pole and brush, charge hose to head.

Allow 5 to 10 minutes per job for WFP setup and break-down on a residential. Traditional setup is bucket out, squeegee belt on, ladder off truck - 2 to 4 minutes.

The crossover point: WFP wins on any job with more than 10 second-story panes, or any job with more than 30 ground-floor panes. Below those counts, the traditional setup may finish faster on the wall clock even though per-pane contact time is slower.

Callback rate

Traditional method on dirty glass with experienced technique: callback rate under 2 percent on standard residential. Inexperienced or rushed: 5 to 15 percent.

WFP on glass cleaned correctly with on-spec pure water (TDS at the head under 5 ppm): callback rate under 1 percent on standard residential. WFP on out-of-spec water or rushed rinse: 10 to 20 percent and can run higher on dark / tinted glass.

The WFP callback rate is more equipment-dependent and less skill-dependent than traditional. That cuts both ways: a new technician hits low callbacks faster on WFP, but equipment failure (resin exhaustion, contaminated brush) produces a multi-job callback wave that traditional method would not produce.

When traditional still wins

Three job types where traditional method beats WFP on total cost:

  1. Storefronts - ground-floor, no setup, mop-and-squeegee finishes a 6-foot pane in 20 seconds with zero tank deployment.
  2. Coated / tinted / low-E exterior glass - if WFP pure water is not held under 5 ppm at the head, mineral residue can build over repeated cycles. Squeegee on clean glass-cleaner has zero residue risk.
  3. Heavy-residue glass (construction film, paint overspray, hard-water etching) - traditional method with scraping, chemistry, and abrasives is the only path. WFP rinse does not remove bonded residue.

When WFP wins

Three job types where WFP dominates on total cost:

  1. 2-story residential routes with 20+ second-story panes per job.
  2. Solar panels and skylights at height - no ladder, no fall exposure.
  3. High-frequency commercial routes (weekly / biweekly) where the glass starts every visit lightly soiled and the brush-and-rinse cycle is fastest.

Field-test method

Once a month, run a comparison on a route you already know:

  1. Pick three similar jobs (same building type, similar window count).
  2. Clean job 1 traditional only, job 2 WFP only, job 3 hybrid (WFP exterior, traditional interior).
  3. Log clock time, technician fatigue (1 to 5 scale), and any callbacks within 7 days.
  4. Repeat over 12 jobs (4 per method) before drawing a conclusion. One-job samples are noise.

Method-mix routing

Most production routes settle on a hybrid: WFP for everything above the first floor and for any ground-floor glass behind landscaping, traditional for storefronts and accessible ground-floor with no obstacles. A single-vehicle setup carrying a 100-gallon tank, a DI vessel, a single pole, and a full traditional kit covers 95 percent of residential and light-commercial work.
