Streaks Only on Tempered Glass Decision Tree

Why this matters

When every window on a job cleans up perfectly except the tempered units, which streak, haze, or show a stubborn film no matter how you squeegee, you are not looking at a technique problem on those panes; you are looking at the glass itself. Tempered glass carries surface characteristics that annealed glass does not: fabricating debris (microscopic glass and ceramic particles fused to the surface in the tempering furnace), a slightly textured or distorted face from the roller-wave of the heating process, and a higher likelihood of bonded mineral or stage residue. Those features hold a film that a normal clean cannot fully remove, and they also dramatically raise the scratch risk if a tech reaches for a scraper or aggressive abrasive to fix the streak. The stakes are liability: scraping fabricating debris off tempered glass leaves permanent scratches, and the customer, the GC, or the glass manufacturer will hold the cleaner responsible. The diagnosis is about recognizing tempered-glass surface conditions and choosing a method that cleans without scratching.

Symptom presentation

Streaks, haze, or a persistent film appear only on the tempered panes (often shower doors, large picture units, doors, and any pane within the code-required tempered zones), while adjacent annealed glass cleans clear. The film may feel gritty under a clean fingertip (fabricating debris), or it may show as a uniform haze that re-streaks every pass (bonded residue or surface texture). Look for the etched tempered stamp in a corner to confirm the glass type. Note whether the panes are new post-construction (high likelihood of fabricating debris and stage residue) or established (more likely hard-water or environmental film). Distinguish a true streak (water and dirt redepositing) from light distortion or roller-wave (an optical waviness of the glass that is not removable and is not a cleaning defect). Note any tiny white specks that resist the squeegee, the signature of fused fabricating debris.

Quick checks

Confirm the glass is tempered by the corner stamp or the location (doors, shower enclosures, low panes near floors and stairs are tempered by code). Run a clean, gloved fingertip across a dry streaked area: a gritty feel indicates fabricating debris or bonded particles, a smooth-but-hazy feel indicates a film or surface texture. Re-clean one pane with fresh solution and a clean squeegee and microfiber to rule out dirty tools or contaminated water redepositing. Check whether the streak is actually optical distortion (roller-wave) by viewing reflections at an angle, waviness in the reflected image is glass distortion, not a removable streak. For new construction, ask whether the panes still carry stage paint, stucco splatter, or concrete slurry, which bond to tempered surfaces and streak. Check water quality; high TDS leaves a film that re-streaks on any glass but is most visible on textured tempered faces.

If the surface feels gritty with fused specks, the branch is fabricating debris, fix is a non-abrasive approach (proper lubrication and a careful technique) and a written caution that scraping risks permanent scratches. If the haze is smooth and re-streaks every pass, the branch is bonded film (stage residue, hard-water mineral), fix is a glass-safe cleaner or mild acid for mineral, applied and rinsed, not scraped. If the streak is optical waviness in reflections, the branch is roller-wave distortion, this is inherent to the glass and is not removable; document it. If only new-construction tempered panes streak, the branch is construction-stage residue, fix is dwell with a glass-safe cleaner and gentle agitation, with scratch caution. If re-cleaning with fresh tools and water clears it, the branch was dirty tools or high-TDS water redepositing, fix is clean tools and treated water. If a film resists everything safe, the branch is a manufacturer surface condition, escalate to the glass supplier.

Confirming diagnosis

Confirm fabricating debris with the gritty feel and visible fused specks plus the fact that it is present only on tempered panes; this is conclusive and means no scraper. Confirm bonded mineral or stage residue by a controlled test on one small area with a glass-safe cleaner (or a mild diluted acid for confirmed mineral) followed by a thorough rinse, if it lifts safely, the diagnosis is residue. Confirm roller-wave by viewing the reflected image at a glancing angle; the periodic waviness moving with viewing angle is optical distortion, not a streak, and re-cleaning will never change it. Confirm tool or water contamination by re-cleaning with verified-clean tools and low-TDS water; a clear result settles it. Before applying any acid or abrasive, test on an inconspicuous corner and confirm with the customer or GC in writing that the glass condition pre-exists, because scratch liability follows the last person who touched the pane.

Remediation

For fabricating debris, do not scrape tempered glass; use a heavily lubricated, glass-safe cleaning method and accept that some fused debris may not fully clear without specialized debris-removal pads used by trained techs at the cleaner's own risk. Document the condition and notify the customer that the debris is a manufacturing defect, not a cleaning failure, and that scraping would permanently scratch the glass. For bonded mineral, use a glass-safe mineral remover or a properly diluted acid per its directions on a tested area, then rinse thoroughly and squeegee; never combine acid with abrasive scraping on tempered glass. For roller-wave distortion, document it as an inherent glass characteristic; it is not removable. For tool or water contamination, switch to clean tools and treated low-TDS water and re-clean. Where a film resists all glass-safe methods, escalate to the glass manufacturer or supplier as a warranty surface defect rather than risking a scratch claim.

Scraping or aggressively abrading tempered glass to remove fabricating debris or residue causes permanent, irreversible scratches and creates a liability claim against the cleaner.
