WFP vs Traditional vs Ladder By Height And Access Method Decision Matrix
Why this matters
Method choice on a residential or low-rise commercial job is a safety decision before it is a productivity decision. Reaching second- and third-story glass from a ladder puts a worker at the height where most window-cleaning fall injuries happen, while a water-fed pole keeps both feet on the ground for the same glass. But WFP is not free: it needs a water source, it does not work on heavily filmed first-time glass without a pre-clean, and it cannot reach glass behind obstructions a pole cannot clear. Picking the wrong method costs either time (ladder-walking a job a pole would finish faster) or safety margin (laddering glass a pole could reach from the ground). This matrix sets the default by height and access so the choice is made before the truck is loaded, not improvised on site.
The options
Three methods cover the vast majority of residential and low-rise work:
- Water-fed pole (WFP): ground-based pure-water cleaning with a brush and rinse on an extending pole. Reaches roughly ground to four stories depending on pole and operator. No spotting if water is pure. No squeegee, dries on its own.
- Traditional (mop and squeegee): hand-applied detergent, squeegee blade, detailing cloth. Highest first-time clarity on heavily soiled glass, full control on detail. Requires the operator to be at the glass.
- Ladder access (with traditional tools): used to bring the operator to elevated glass when WFP cannot reach or cannot clean it. The access method, not a cleaning method itself.
When each wins
WFP wins on upper-story exterior glass with a clear vertical line from the ground, on routine recurring maintenance where the glass is already in good condition, and on any job where the alternative is laddering at height. It is the default for second- and third-story exteriors that have a clear approach. It also wins on storefront upper transoms and anything above safe ladder reach. It loses on first-time glass with heavy construction film or hard-water staging (needs a traditional pre-clean first), on glass behind soffits, deep recesses, or grilles the brush cannot reach, and on interiors.
Traditional wins on all interior glass, on first-time and post-construction exterior glass where film must be physically removed, on detailed multi-pane and divided-light windows, and on ground-floor exteriors where the operator can stand safely at the glass. It is the default for first-floor and interior work and the necessary partner to ladder access above.
Ladder access wins only when the glass is elevated AND WFP cannot reach or cannot adequately clean it AND a safer option (pole, lift, or rope descent by a trained crew) is not available or not justified. Ladder is the access of last resort for height, used with full ladder-safety discipline, never the casual default just because a ladder is on the van.
Field decision flow
- Is the glass interior? Use traditional. Stop.
- Is the glass first-time, post-construction, or heavily hard-water stained? Plan a traditional pre-clean regardless of height; WFP maintenance can follow on later visits once the glass is restored.
- Is the glass ground-floor exterior reachable standing? Use traditional.
- Is the glass above the first floor with a clear vertical approach from the ground? Use WFP. This is the safety-preferred default for upper-story exteriors.
- Is the upper glass blocked from a ground pole (soffit, recess, grille, obstruction) so WFP cannot reach or clean it? Now weigh access: prefer a lift or trained rope descent where the job justifies it; use ladder access only with full ladder-safety controls and only when it is the appropriate option for that specific reach.
- Above roughly four stories or any glass requiring suspended access: this is high-rise scope governed by separate standards; a ladder is not the answer.
Ladder use at second-story height and above is the highest-injury access method in window cleaning. Set the extension ladder near the recommended angle (roughly 75 degrees, the 4-to-1 base-to-height ratio), secure or have it footed, extend at least 3 feet above the upper landing when used for access, never overreach past your belt buckle, never stand on the top rungs, and verify the surface and footing. When WFP can reach the same glass from the ground, the ground-based method is the safer default. Rope descent and suspended access have their own mandatory training, anchor, and inspection requirements and must not be improvised.
Practical limits that move the default
A few site facts override the height table:
- Water source. WFP needs a water supply and a pure-water system on the truck; on a remote site with no fill option and a small upper-glass count, traditional access may be the only practical route. Plan the fill before committing to WFP.
- First-time versus maintenance. The same upper-story glass that is a clean WFP job on a recurring route can need a traditional pre-clean on the first visit because heavy film and construction residue do not always release from a brush-and-rinse alone. Quote the first clean and the maintenance cycle as different methods.
- Reach geometry. WFP effectiveness falls off as the pole gets long and the angle gets shallow; very high glass behind a wide soffit may be technically in pole range but not cleanable to standard. Verify a clear, near-vertical approach, not just raw pole length.
- Frequency and contract. On weekly or monthly commercial maintenance, WFP from the ground compounds its safety advantage every visit, which is why it is the standard for recurring upper-story exterior work even where a ladder would physically reach.
