Chimney Cap Installed but Birds Still Enter: Wrong Cap vs. Installation Fault Decision Tree
Why this matters
When a cap was sold and installed to keep birds out and they are still entering, the customer has a legitimate grievance. The two root causes - wrong cap specification and installation fault - require different fixes and carry different liability implications. If your technician installed a decorative cap with oversized mesh when a wildlife-exclusion cap was needed, the appropriate response is a no-charge correction. If the cap is the correct spec but was installed with a gap, the fix is also yours to own. Diagnosing clearly before the follow-up visit prevents rework and protects the relationship.
Understand which birds are entering
Starlings and house sparrows are the most common chimney-entering birds in North America. Both are small enough to pass through mesh openings larger than 3/4 inch. Larger birds (pigeons, crows) are blocked by most standard caps but can enter flues that have no cap at all or a cap that has become dislodged.
If the customer reports small birds entering through what appears to be a capped flue, the first question is whether the cap mesh is the correct size.
Diagnostic step 1 - measure the mesh opening
A decorative or spark-arresting cap typically uses mesh with openings of 1 inch to 1.5 inches. This size blocks large debris and embers but allows starlings and sparrows to pass through freely.
A wildlife-exclusion cap uses 3/4-inch or smaller mesh. This is the minimum specification required to exclude the smallest common chimney birds.
Field test: Carry a quarter (roughly 24mm diameter). If a quarter fits through the mesh opening, the mesh is too large to exclude small birds. A 3/4-inch exclusion mesh will not pass a quarter.
If the installed cap has oversized mesh, the cap specification is the problem regardless of how well it was installed.
Diagnostic step 2 - confirm all flues are capped on multi-flue chases
A chimney chase serving multiple appliances has multiple flue tiles. A single-flue cap covers only one opening. If the customer has a two-flue or three-flue chase and only one flue was capped, birds can enter through any uncapped opening and reach the interior through shared attic space above the firebox, through draft crossover, or directly if the damper on the uncapped flue is open.
Field test: From the roof, count the number of flue tile openings in the chase and confirm that each one has a cap. A multi-flue cap (also called a full-width or chase cover) covers the entire chase top in one unit. Individual single-flue caps must be present on every opening.
Diagnostic step 3 - inspect cap seating and fit
Even a correctly specified cap allows entry if it is not seated properly.
Check the following from the roof:
Flue tile overhang gaps: A slip-fit cap slides over the outside of the flue tile. If the flue tile projects unevenly from the crown, one side of the cap may sit higher than the other, leaving a gap at the low corner. A gap of 1/2 inch is enough for a starling to squeeze through.
Crown coverage vs. flue-tile-only coverage: A cap secured only to the flue tile with no coverage of the area between the tile and the crown edge leaves the mortar joint area exposed. Birds do not need to enter through the cap at all if they can walk into the gap between the flue tile outer wall and the chimney crown. A properly installed cap should overhang the flue tile sufficiently to eliminate this path, or the crown should be intact and close-fitting around the tile base.
Cap movement or tilt: Verify the cap is level and that the attachment hardware (stainless screws, clamp bands, or set screws) is fully engaged. A cap that can be rocked by hand is loose enough for a bird to displace it.
Crown damage at the tile base: A cracked or eroded crown allows birds to stand on the crown surface and enter through gaps in the mortar that surrounds the flue tile. This is a crown repair issue, not a cap issue, but it creates an entry path adjacent to the cap.

If active nesting is present in the flue, federal and state regulations may restrict removal depending on the species and nesting status. Confirm local rules before disturbing an active nest. In most jurisdictions, starlings and house sparrows are not protected, but other species may be. When in doubt, consult your state wildlife agency before proceeding.
Scope documentation for callbacks
Record the following when responding to a bird-entry callback after cap installation:
- Date of original cap installation and cap type installed
- Mesh opening size measured on the installed cap (pass/fail relative to 3/4-inch standard)
- Number of flues in the chase and number with caps confirmed
- Cap seating inspection result (seated correctly, gap found, tilted/loose)
- Crown condition at the flue tile base
- Resolution performed and whether it was warranty corrective work or a new service
