Why this matters
Carbon monoxide is the silent danger of combustion appliances + chimneys. It's odorless, colorless, and tasteless; the customer doesn't know they're being exposed until symptoms appear. The CDC documents ~400 unintentional non-fire CO deaths per year in the US from consumer products. A chimney sweep is in the customer's home, near their combustion appliances + venting; recommending CO protection is part of professional service.
Why CO is dangerous
CO bonds to hemoglobin in the blood 200+ times more strongly than oxygen:
- Low exposure: headache, dizziness, nausea (flu-like)
- Higher exposure: confusion, weakness, vision problems
- Severe: unconsciousness, brain damage, death
Many CO deaths involve victims who go to sleep without knowing they're being poisoned.

How CO accumulates in chimneys
Combustion produces CO when:
- Incomplete combustion (smoldering fires, insufficient oxygen)
- Chimney draft is restricted (blockage)
- Damper is closed during burn (rare error)
- Chimney is too small for the appliance
- Backdrafting from negative pressure in the home (kitchen / bath fan, furnace running)
Customer's home conditions can amplify the risk.
CO detector requirements
Per IRC R315 + state codes:
- Required in dwellings with fuel-burning appliances
- Required in dwellings with attached garages
- Outside each separate sleeping area (in the immediate vicinity of bedrooms)
- On every level (in some jurisdictions)
These are minimum requirements. Some areas require more.

UL 2034 is the CO detector standard:
- Sensor type (electrochemical, semiconductor, or biomimetic)
- Response time (specific to the detected level)
- Battery backup (required for hardwired)
- 7-year sensor life (typical; verify model)
- Test button (verify operation)
Installation considerations
For chimney sweep customers:
- Always recommend detectors on every level
- Verify presence at every service visit
- Replace battery-only detectors approaching end of life
- Replace 10-year sealed detectors as needed
What the chimney sweep checks during service
Beyond chimney cleaning:
- Visual check of CO detectors: present? Working? Battery?
- Test button: verify the alarm sounds
- Replacement timeline: note any aging detectors
- Customer education: about CO + detectors
- Recommendation: any missing detectors
This adds value to the chimney service.
When alarms are triggered
If a customer reports a CO alarm activated:
- Customer should leave the home immediately
- Call 911 OR the gas utility (some areas have specific CO response numbers)
- Do NOT investigate inside until cleared by professionals
- Customer should not re-enter until safe
If the customer has had alarms triggered, schedule a comprehensive inspection of all fuel-burning appliances + venting.
Inspection during chimney service
While performing chimney work:
- Combustion testing of the fireplace / appliance (if equipped)
- Draft testing: smoke pencil verifies the chimney is drawing
- Visual inspection of vent connections (heater, water heater, etc.)
- Note any signs of CO (yellow flame instead of blue gas; sooty deposits on appliances; rust around vent areas)
These findings warrant deeper investigation.
Combustion analysis
For gas appliances, professional combustion analysis:
- Combustion analyzer measures O2, CO, CO2, temperature
- Verifies appliance is burning efficiently + safely
- Identifies inadequate combustion
- Specialty service; some chimney sweeps offer
For customers with gas appliances, this is an annual maintenance service.
Vent integrity
For combustion appliances, vent integrity matters:
- Visual inspection: no rust, no separations, no leaks
- Joint inspection: connections secure
- Termination: properly terminated to outside
- Slope: adequate slope for natural draft
- Material: appropriate material for the appliance + fuel
A vent failure means combustion gases enter the home - CO risk.
Backdrafting
When negative pressure in the home overcomes chimney draft:
- Range hood running on high
- Bathroom exhaust running
- Furnace return air pulling on the home
- Combustion appliance can't vent; gases spill into the home
For customers with frequent backdrafting:
- Verify makeup air for the home
- Check vent sizing
- Consider sealed combustion appliances (no draft dependency)
- Address other negative pressure sources
Common signs of CO problems
Customer reports:
- Headaches that go away when leaving the home
- Sleepiness during certain times
- Pets showing similar symptoms
- Multiple family members feeling unwell
- Stains around vent connections
- Yellow flame in gas appliances (should be blue)
- Soot accumulation on appliance bodies
- Strange smell during combustion
These warrant immediate investigation.
Recommending CO detection upgrades
Standard upgrades:

Replace, don't just battery-swap, when detectors approach end of life. The sensor degrades.
