Customer Tried a Chimney Log Cleaner Then Called - DIY-Induced Decision Tree

Why this matters

Creosote-sweeping logs (CSLs) are marketed as a substitute for professional sweeping. They are not. The label on every reputable product says so, but homeowners read the front of the box, not the back. When a customer calls after burning one or several, you are walking into a system whose creosote profile has been chemically altered: glaze that was solid may now be flaking, debris may have fallen to the smoke shelf, and the homeowner expects the chimney to be "mostly clean already." Your inspection, your scope of work, and your liability footprint all change because of what they did before you arrived. Reading this situation correctly protects the customer, protects your business, and avoids the trap of writing a sweep ticket on a flue that actually needs a Level 2 inspection.

Step 1: Establish what they burned and when

Before the truck moves, ask three questions. What product did they use, how many did they burn, and when was the last one. Brand matters less than chemistry: most CSLs use a catalyst that vaporizes during combustion and condenses on creosote deposits, drying and embrittling them over the following one to two weeks. Effects are cumulative; a customer who burned one log last month is a different situation from a customer who burned three over the last two weekends. Also ask whether they have used the fireplace since the last log, and whether they noticed any falling debris, odor changes, or smoke spillage into the room. Those answers shape your inspection plan and the warnings you give on arrival.

Step 2: Decide inspection level before you arrive

Default to a Level 2 inspection on any post-CSL call where the customer cannot confirm the flue was clean before they started, or where they report any change in draft, smell, or sound. The CSL marketing implies you can sweep and go; reality is that you do not know the pre-CSL baseline, you do not know whether glaze has loosened in chunks that may be lodged at a smoke chamber offset, and you do not know whether the chemical action exposed previously hidden damage. A Level 2 with a camera scan is the only way to document current condition. If the customer pushes back on price, explain that a Level 1 visual cannot see past the first offset and that you will not warrant a sweep done blind on a chemically altered flue. Most customers accept this once it is framed as protecting them, not upselling them.

Step 3: On arrival, inspect the firebox and hearth first

Before any brush touches the flue, look at the firebox floor, the damper, and the hearth extension. CSLs commonly dislodge stage-2 and stage-3 creosote in flakes or chunks; some of that material falls during burning and some falls hours or days later. Photograph what you find. If you see significant flake debris, that is your first datapoint that the upper flue has shed material. Check the damper for chunks lodged in the hinge or seat - a damper that no longer closes fully is a common post-CSL finding and is a customer-facing item even if the rest of the flue scopes clean. Document smoke chamber condition through the damper opening with a light and mirror or short scope.

Step 4: Camera scan before brushing

This is the single most important departure from a routine sweep. Run a chimney camera from the top down (or bottom up if access dictates) before any mechanical cleaning. You are looking for three things. First, large chunks of dislodged glaze sitting on offsets, smoke shelf, or lodged against the damper - these can fall on you or your equipment if you brush blind. Second, exposed liner damage that was previously hidden under glaze - cracked clay tiles, separated joints, or in metal liners, corrosion or seam failure. Third, the actual creosote stage and distribution; CSLs convert stage-3 glaze toward stage-2 flake, but coverage is rarely uniform and the upper third of the flue often retains heavy deposits because the catalyst is consumed lower in the system.

Never assume a CSL-treated flue is "easier" to sweep. Chunks of dislodged glaze can fall during brushing and damage liners, dampers, or strike you. Camera-scan first, clear debris from offsets and the smoke shelf, then brush.

Step 5: Decide sweep versus stop-work

If the camera scan shows an intact liner with manageable flake creosote and no chunks lodged at offsets, proceed with a standard sweep using rotary or pull-down rods appropriate to the liner type. If the scan shows a damaged liner - cracked tiles, separated joints, perforation, or heavy stage-3 in zones the CSL did not reach - stop and convert the visit to an inspection report with photos and a quote. Sweeping a damaged flue does not fix it and may push debris into damaged areas where it is harder to remove later. The customer hired you expecting a sweep; you are delivering professional judgment instead. Frame the conversation around what the camera showed, not around what they did wrong.

Step 6: Document the DIY history in writing

On the invoice and the inspection report, record the CSL use: product if known, count, timing. This protects you if the customer later claims a defect appeared after your visit that was actually pre-existing and revealed by the CSL action. Include camera screenshots of any damage found. If you swept and the system passed, note that the inspection was performed after customer-initiated chemical treatment and that condition reflects post-treatment state. If you stopped work for a repair quote, document why in plain language the customer can read back to a spouse or an insurance adjuster.

Step 7: Customer-facing guidance for future use

Most customers who used a CSL did so because they thought it would save money or time. Without lecturing, give them the rule going forward: CSLs are an adjunct to professional sweeping for stage-3 glaze cases, not a replacement for it, and they should only be used on the recommendation of a sweep who has inspected the system. Recommend an annual inspection cadence per NFPA 211 regardless of use level. If they burn frequently, recommend more often. Put this in the report, not just verbally.
