How to Install a Chimney Cap
Why this matters
A chimney cap is the single most cost-effective add-on a sweep crew sells. It blocks rain (which drives liner damage + firebox staining), animals (raccoons + birds + squirrels nesting cost to remove + repair), embers escaping, downdrafts, + meets code in most U.S. jurisdictions. Sells for installed; takes 30-60 minutes; closes at 35-50% of sweep visits with a clear before/after photo.
Cap types
Choose by chimney style + customer goals:
Single-flue caps: round, square, or rectangular hood + screen sized to one flue. Most common residential cap. in materials.
Multi-flue caps: oversized hood covering the entire crown + multiple flues. Used on chimneys with 2+ flues (firebox + furnace flue). materials.
Top-mount caps: bolt to the masonry crown. Most secure but requires drilling.
Outside-mount caps: clamp to the outside of the clay flue tile. Faster install, no drilling. Most popular for tile flues.
Inside-mount caps: insert + tension inside the flue. Used when external clearance is tight.
Draft-increasing caps (Vacu-Stack, Lyemance): for chimneys with chronic downdraft. materials, big problem-solver upsell.
Damper-cap combos (Lock-Top, Energy Top): cap + top-sealing damper in one. Stops 90% of conditioned-air loss through the flue. materials, installed.
Materials specs
- 304 stainless or copper: 25-year customer expectation, lifetime warranty common
- Galvanized: budget option; rust through in 8-12 years. Avoid except temporary
- Galvalume: middle ground
Mesh: 3/4" maximum (code), 1/2" common, 3/8" for spark + animal protection (more clog risk).
Tools + materials
- Cap sized to flue (measure outside-to-outside of tile, NOT inside)
- Stainless screws (3 minimum) or masonry anchors
- Cordless drill + masonry bit (for top-mount)
- Polyurethane sealant (Geocel 2300 or equivalent)
- Caulk gun
- Wire brush + putty knife
- 28-32 ft extension ladder + roof harness
- Anchored line for tools
- Tape measure + camera
Procedure
Step 1: Measure correctly
From the roof, measure the outside dimensions of the clay flue tile. Round flue: outside diameter. Square flue: outside width. Rectangular: outside length x width. Multi-flue: width x length of entire crown.
Verify with a photo + a tape held against the tile.
Step 2: Inspect crown + tile
Before bolting anything down:
- Crown cracked? Need crown repair first (separate scope)
- Tile chipped/cracked at top? Reline conversation
- Cap that's already there but failed? Document why before replacing
Step 3: Prep mounting surface
Wire-brush the tile or crown to remove loose mortar + creosote. Wipe with a dry rag. Sealant won't bond to soot or wet surface.
Step 4: Dry-fit
Slip the cap over the flue tile + confirm:
- Sits level (out-of-plumb cap whistles in wind)
- Mounting brackets contact tile firmly
- Mesh is centered above the flue opening
- No gap between cap base + tile (otherwise embers fall onto roof)
Step 5: Secure
Outside-mount (most common):
- Tighten clamping screws - typically 4, alternating like lug nuts
- Snug, not stripped - over-tightening cracks tile
- Bead of sealant around the bottom edge where cap meets tile
Top-mount:
- Mark holes through cap base onto crown
- Drill with masonry bit
- Tap in lead anchors or use sleeve anchors
- Bolt down + seal under base + around bolt heads
Step 6: Verify
- Push from each side - cap shouldn't move
- Photo from 4 angles
- Look down inside the flue - mesh is centered, no obstruction
Step 7: Cleanup + briefing
Take a photo from the ground showing the new cap. Email or text to customer. Show old cap photo (if replacing) next to new cap. Provide warranty card.
Acceptance criteria
- Cap level + secure
- Sealant continuous at base
- Mesh centered + unobstructed
- Customer signed + photos delivered
- Warranty registered if applicable
Common pitfalls
- Wrong size: order from photo without measuring, cap doesn't fit
- Over-tightening: cracks tile + creates leak path
- No sealant: rain runs between cap + tile into chimney
- Skipping crown inspection: cap on a crumbling crown = water damage continues
- Galvanized in coastal areas: rust streaks within 18 months
- Mesh too tight: clogs with creosote within a year (warning customer, document)
Safety considerations
- Roof harness anchored to ridge or proper anchor
- 3-point contact climbing
- Hard hat - tools dropped from chimney top hurt
- Don't install in wet/icy conditions
- Storm coming? Postpone; sealant cure needs dry hours
The cap photo IS the sale. Take a 4K shot from the ground BEFORE you climb - show the customer the missing or damaged cap on your phone. 35-50% of sweep customers buy a cap on the same visit when they see the photo. Without the photo, the close rate drops below 15% because they imagine "it can't be that bad."
