Wood Stove Overfires Air Leak vs Gasket vs Draft Decision Tree
Why this matters
A wood stove that runs too hot, ignores the air control, and glows or warps is overfiring, and that is both a safety hazard and a fast path to a cracked stove, a damaged baffle, and a chimney fire risk from overheating. Overfiring happens when the stove gets more combustion air than the user is asking for, and that uncontrolled air comes from one of three places: a worn door or glass gasket leaking around the seal, a failed ash-pan or air-control component, or excessive chimney draft pulling air through the firebox faster than the controls can limit. Each has a different fix. A sweep who only cleans the flue misses an overfire condition that can crack the appliance or ignite creosote. Isolating the uncontrolled-air source is the diagnosis.
Symptom presentation
The customer reports the stove burns too hot regardless of the air control setting, with the fire roaring and the wood consumed quickly. The stovetop or flue temperature reads high (often well above the normal operating band on a stovetop thermometer), the stove or pipe may glow dull red, paint discolors, or the baffle and firebox warp. Closing the air control fully does little or nothing. The problem may worsen on cold, windy days (high draft) or appear after a gasket aged out or an ash-pan door was left ajar.
Quick checks
Confirm overfire with a stovetop or flue-pipe thermometer, the readings tell you whether you are diagnosing a real overfire or a user expectation. With the stove cool and out, test the door gasket with the dollar-bill test: close a strip of paper in the door and try to pull it out; easy pull means a leaking gasket. Check the glass gasket the same way. Inspect the ash-pan door and any secondary-air or ash-dump controls for a tight seal and full closure. Verify the air control actually closes its damper or shutter all the way. Then assess draft, an exterior temperature and wind reading, flue height, and any draft history, because excessive draft overfires even a perfectly sealed stove.

Find the uncontrolled-air source.
- Door or glass gasket fails the dollar-bill test (pulls out easily). Suspect a worn, flattened, or detached gasket leaking combustion air around the seal. The most common overfire cause on an older stove. Confirm at multiple points around the door.
- Ash-pan door or ash-dump not sealing, or left ajar. Suspect uncontrolled air entering below the grate, which feeds the fire regardless of the primary air control. Confirm the ash-pan door gasket and latch.
- Air control closes but the stove still overfires, gaskets seal well. Suspect excessive chimney draft pulling air through every available opening faster than the control limits. Worse on cold, windy days. GO TO draft measurement.
- Stove overfires only on very cold or windy days. Suspect high draft from a tall flue or cold-weather stack effect. Confirm with a draft gauge.
- Air control linkage broken or shutter stuck open. Suspect a mechanical failure leaving the primary air open. Confirm by operating the control and watching the damper.
- Operator is loading too much wood or running with the door cracked. Suspect operation, not a fault; confirm the user's loading and door habits.
Draft measurement: read flue draft with a manometer at the appliance. Manufacturer-specified draft is typically a modest negative pressure; readings well above that range overfire the stove and call for a draft control.
Confirming diagnosis
Combine the gasket test, the control check, and a draft reading. If the dollar-bill test fails at the door or glass and sealing those restores control, the gasket was the source. If the ash-pan or air control was the open path, sealing or repairing it confirms it. If everything seals, the air control fully closes, and the stove still overfires, measure flue draft with a manometer: a reading well above the manufacturer's specified draft range confirms excessive draft as the cause, especially when the overfire tracks cold and windy weather. The confirming logic is that a sealed stove with a closed air control and correct draft cannot overfire, so whichever of those three you find out of spec is the cause. Verify with the stovetop and flue thermometer that temperatures return to the normal band after the suspected fix.
Remediation
Eliminate the uncontrolled air. Replace worn door and glass gaskets with the correct diameter and density rope gasket and high-temperature cement per the stove manufacturer, then re-run the dollar-bill test to confirm a tight seal all around. Repair or replace a failed ash-pan door gasket and latch so it seals fully, and instruct the customer never to burn with the ash-pan door open. Repair a broken air-control linkage or stuck shutter so the primary air closes completely. Where draft is excessive, install a barometric draft regulator or a manual flue damper sized and located per code and the manufacturer, and verify with the manometer that draft falls into the specified range. Correct operator habits, proper loading and never running with the loading door cracked. After repairs, confirm the stove holds a controlled fire with the air closed and stovetop temperatures stay in the normal band.
An overfiring stove is a fire and burn hazard: it can crack the firebox, warp the baffle, ignite creosote in the flue, and overheat nearby combustibles past their clearances. Do not leave a stove that overfires with the air control closed in service. Identify and correct the uncontrolled-air source before returning the appliance to use, and confirm clearances to combustibles meet the stove's listing.
