Board Surface Splinters Only on the Sun-Facing Side: Single-Observable Diagnosis

Why this matters

A customer who calls about barefoot-hazard splintering is describing a safety problem, not just an aesthetic one. Splinters from a raised grain or a surface check can cause lacerations, and the customer is right to want a fast resolution. When the splintering is asymmetric - present only on the boards that face south or west, absent on north-facing or shaded faces of the same boards - the distribution is the diagnosis. Three causes share this pattern, and knowing which one is active determines whether the fix is a light sanding and sealant, a sealer reapplication, or a board replacement conversation.

Why the sun-exposed face is different from the shaded face

PT lumber boards are not uniform cylinders; they have a growth ring orientation relative to the saw cut, and the two faces of a flat-sawn board behave differently in UV and thermal exposure. The sun-facing side of a south or west-exposed deck absorbs more UV radiation per day and cycles through more extreme wet-dry swings as morning dew evaporates and afternoon sun bears down. Three failure modes result from this asymmetric exposure:

UV-driven lignin breakdown (grain raise): Wood fibers are held together by lignin, which degrades under UV exposure. As the lignin breaks down on the sun face, the cellulose fibers stand up above the surface - this is grain raise. Early-stage grain raise feels rough and catches socks; advanced grain raise produces actual fiber splinters that detach from the surface. The shaded face of the same board retains intact lignin and stays smooth because it has received a fraction of the UV dose.

Finish or sealant failure on the sun side only: UV degrades the carrier and binder in most exterior finishes faster on the sun-facing side. When the finish is gone from the south face but intact on the north face, the bare wood begins unprotected dry-wet cycling. Fibers raise and check while the shaded face stays stable.

Crown-down installation on flat-sawn boards: The correct orientation is crown-up (rings arching upward), which sheds water at the edges. Crown-down boards hold water at the edges and expose the pith-facing surface to the sky. The pith face contains juvenile wood and higher growth ring density, and checks more aggressively in UV and heat. On a south or west-facing deck, crown-down boards show checking while a north-facing board on the same deck may not.

Step 1: Classify the damage type

Before branching the diagnosis, determine whether the splintering is surface-level fiber raise or deep structural checks.

Surface fiber raise: Run a palm across the board surface. Individual fibers catch the palm skin but the board surface is otherwise continuous; no visible cracks running with the grain. Sand a 6-inch test section with 80-grit paper; the surface becomes smooth immediately and no cracks open up after sanding. This is a fiber-raise / grain-raise problem and is correctable without board replacement.

Surface checking (shallow): Visible cracks running parallel to the grain that are less than 1/16 inch deep and less than 1 inch long. The board face is splitting along the grain interface between growth rings, but only at the surface layer. Shallow checks are cosmetically concerning and produce splinter hazard but do not compromise the structural integrity of the board. These are correctable with a sanding and sealer application but require more aggressive surface prep than simple fiber raise.

Deep checking: Cracks that run more than 1/8 inch deep, extend the length of the board, or show evidence of widening. Deep checks indicate that the board has lost significant surface material and the structural section may be reduced. Boards with deep checks should be evaluated for replacement, particularly in high-traffic areas or where barefoot use is normal.

Step 2: Check the finish condition asymmetrically

On the sun-facing side, look for bare, gray, or silvered wood and a visible finish line where the sun face transitions to the shaded underside. Run a finger across both faces: rough sun face, smooth shaded face confirms the asymmetric-weathering branch. The fix is surface prep (sand with the grain to remove raised fibers and loose check edges) followed by a UV-stabilized penetrating exterior finish at manufacturer-specified coverage. A water repellent without a UV blocker will delay but not prevent recurrence.

Step 3: Confirm board orientation

Look at the end grain at the rim joist or a loose offcut. Rings arching toward the walking surface = crown-down (pith face exposed, checks aggressively). Rings arching away = crown-up (correct).

If the boards are crown-down, this explains why the sun-facing surface checks at a rate that the correctly oriented boards on a different deck exposure would not. Boards that are already deeply checked due to crown-down installation may need replacement if the surface loss is significant. Future installations on the same project should be oriented crown-up per standard practice.

Step 4: Corrective action by branch

Fiber raise only, finish intact: Light sand (80-grit with the grain, then 120-grit) to knock down raised fibers. Clean thoroughly. Apply a UV-stabilized penetrating finish per manufacturer directions. No replacement required.

Fiber raise or shallow checks, finish failed: Sand the affected faces (80-grit to remove raised fibers and loose check edges, then 120-grit to smooth), clean, allow to dry, and apply two coats of a UV-stabilized penetrating exterior finish. If checks are present, a penetrating finish with a film-forming topcoat provides better check-sealing than a penetrating finish alone. Schedule a maintenance re-coat interval with the customer (typically every 1 to 2 years on south-facing surfaces in full sun).

Deep checks, crown-down boards, or structural surface loss: Present the customer with a board replacement recommendation. Document the extent of affected boards (percentage of deck surface, linear footage) and confirm whether the framing is in good condition before re-decking. New boards should be installed crown-up with a UV-stabilized finish applied before or within 2 weeks of installation.

Do not power-wash a checked or grain-raised PT lumber deck to address the splintering before sanding and re-sealing. High-pressure water blasting an already-open grain drives water deeper into the checks, accelerates moisture-cycling damage, and can erode the surface further. Use light hand sanding or a soft-bristle brush wash followed by light sanding as surface prep.
