Deck Board End-Gap and Side-Spacing Installation
Why this matters
A deck board sets too tight will buckle, push the picture-frame border out of square, or split at the screw. A deck board set too loose will look sloppy at the joints and let stair-tread debris drop through. Every decking line publishes a spacing table; almost no crew follows it correctly because the table changes with the season and the board temperature at install. Get the right gap and the deck looks tight in winter, ages well in summer, and never opens a gap wide enough to drop a phone through.
Two different gaps to think about
- Side gap: parallel to the board length, between long edges of adjacent boards. Affects drainage and appearance.
- End gap: at the butt joint where two boards meet end-to-end over a joist or doubled-joist seam. Affects thermal expansion.
The two gaps are governed by different physics. Side gap is a drainage and aesthetic decision. End gap is a thermal-expansion decision and is much more sensitive to product type.
Side-gap recommendations by material
- Pressure-treated 5/4 boards, installed wet (typical from yard): butt them tight. The boards will shrink as they dry to a 1/8 to 3/16 inch side gap.
- PT boards installed dry (kiln-dried after treatment, KDAT): set a 1/8 inch side gap. They will not shrink further.
- Cedar, redwood, ipe and other hardwoods: 1/8 inch side gap.
- Composite (Trex, Fiberon, TimberTech): per manufacturer, typically 3/16 to 1/4 inch side gap. Most hidden-fastener clips set this automatically.
- Capped-PVC boards: typically 3/16 inch side gap.
A scrap of the manufacturer's spacer or a 3/16 inch tool (carpenter pencil, ZipBoard spacer) maintains consistent spacing across the field.
End-gap recommendations by material and installation temperature
End gaps depend on temperature at the time of install because composite expands and contracts longitudinally with temperature change. Manufacturer tables typically look like this:
- Below 40 F install temperature: 3/16 to 1/4 inch end gap
- 40 to 60 F: 1/8 to 3/16 inch end gap
- 60 to 80 F: 1/16 to 1/8 inch end gap
- Above 80 F: butt them light, 1/32 to 1/16 inch
For pressure-treated wood, end gap is less temperature-sensitive but still 1/16 to 1/8 inch is the right target.
Read the install instructions for the specific product. Trex Transcend and Trex Enhance have different gap tables, even within the same brand.
Joist requirements at butt joints
Every butt joint must land on a joist. Three acceptable details:
- Doubled joist (two joists fastened side-by-side at the butt location), one half of each board fastened to its own joist
- Cleat (a block of treated 2x stock screwed to the side of a single joist, providing extra nailing surface for the board ends)
- Wider joist (some manufacturers list a 3-inch wide LVL or treated 4x joist as acceptable, allowing both board ends on a single member)
A single 2x joist (1.5 inches actual) is not wide enough to land two board ends. The screw goes into the very edge of the joist and pulls loose.
End-cut sealing on PT lumber
Every cut end of PT lumber breaks the pressure-treatment envelope. The chemicals only penetrate so far; cuts expose untreated heartwood. Apply an end-cut preservative (Copper Brown, Outlast Q8 Log Oil end-cut, Anchorseal) to every cut end before installation. Most warranty programs require this in writing.
Picture-frame border execution
A picture-frame border around the deck perimeter changes the spacing math:
- The border board must land on continuous blocking (see Blocking and Bridging article)
- The border-to-field side gap follows the side-gap rule for the material
- Mitered corners need a tighter side gap (1/16 inch) to read as a tight miter; widen the gap and the miter looks open
- Fasten the miter with a stainless-pinned biscuit or pocket screw from below; surface-fastening the miter point opens the joint over a season
Hidden-fastener systems and gap
Most hidden-fastener clips set the side gap automatically by the clip thickness. Verify the clip-defined gap against the manufacturer's gap table; some commercial-grade composite specs want a wider gap than the clip provides.
End gap with hidden fasteners requires manual placement of a spacer (often included in the kit, sometimes sold separately). Skip this and the end gap closes to zero on a hot day, and the boards buckle.
Final inspection checklist
- Every butt joint lands on a doubled joist or cleat
- Side gap consistent across the field (no closing or opening row to row)
- End gap matches the manufacturer's temperature-adjusted table
- All cut ends sealed (PT lumber only)
- No screws within 1 inch of a board end (splits the board); pre-drill if the manufacturer requires
