Deck Joist Spacing for Composite vs Pressure-Treated Decking
Why this matters
Joist spacing is the single decision that controls whether a deck feels solid underfoot or telegraphs every step. Pressure-treated 5/4 boards and 1-inch composite boards look the same on the truck, but they do not behave the same on the framing. Get the spacing wrong and you either void the decking warranty, bounce the board, or fail inspection on the span tables.
The two governing documents
For framing capacity the controlling document is IRC R507 (residential decks). For decking installation the controlling document is the manufacturer's printed installation instructions, which the IRC defers to by reference. When the two disagree, the more restrictive value wins on a permitted deck.
Pressure-treated solid sawn decking
Nominal 5/4 PT deck boards (actual 1 inch) carry the following maximum on-center spacing under IRC Table R507.7:
- 16 inches on-center for boards installed perpendicular to joists
- 12 inches on-center for boards installed at a diagonal (typically 45 degrees)
Two-by stock (nominal 2x6) tolerates 24 inches on-center perpendicular and 16 inches on-center diagonal. The diagonal reduction exists because the board now spans a longer point-to-point distance between bearing points.
Composite and capped polymer decking
Composite is weaker in bending than solid PT softwood at the same nominal thickness. Every major manufacturer publishes its own table; the recurring numbers are:
- Standard 1-inch grooved composite (Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon, Deckorators): 16 inches on-center perpendicular, 12 inches on-center diagonal
- Standard 1-inch composite for stair treads: 9 inches on-center, with a doubled stringer detail at the nose
- Premium PVC and mineral-based boards: same 16 inches on-center perpendicular, with some lines approved to 24 inches on-center when installed perpendicular under their commercial-grade spec
- 2x6 composite (where offered): 24 inches on-center perpendicular
Never assume "composite is composite." The capstock matters less than the core; a foam-core PVC board and a polyethylene-bonded wood-flour board have different deflection curves at the same span.
Cantilever and overhang
Decking cantilever past the last joist is capped by the same manufacturer instructions, typically not more than four times the board thickness or 1 inch past the joist face for 5/4 stock, whichever is less. The IRC caps joist cantilever at one-fourth the back-span (R507.6) and never more than the table value for the species and size.
Picture-frame and inlay framing
A picture-frame border adds a perimeter board running perpendicular to the field boards. That border needs continuous blocking under every joint, which forces a sister joist or a doubled rim. Plan the blocking grid before ordering material; retrofitting it after the field is screwed down doubles the labor.
Stair treads are not field decking. Reduce joist (stringer) spacing to the manufacturer's stair-tread value, typically 9 to 12 inches on-center, even when the field is set at 16. A tread that flexes underfoot is a fall hazard and a code defect under IRC R311.7.
Inspection-ready documentation
Keep the printed installation instructions for the exact product line on site during framing inspection. The inspector is allowed to require them under IRC R104.11 (alternative materials). A screenshot on a phone is not acceptable in most jurisdictions.
