Fixed The Bounce Now A Board Cups Second Fault Masking Decision Tree
Why this matters
The bounce is gone, the customer agrees the deck feels solid, and on the same visit they point at a board that has cupped or is starting to. This is a second-fault masking pattern: the bounce hid a moisture or geometry issue at one or two boards, and now that the framing is stiff the eye has nothing else to fix on. The cup is usually not new; it was there before, and the customer simply did not notice it under the bounce. The diagnostic challenge is figuring out whether the cup is from how the board was oriented at install, from a moisture imbalance the framing change created, or from a board that was already on its way out. The remediation answer is different for each, and replacing the wrong board does not stop the next cup.
Symptom presentation
Characterize the cup the same way you would size a member:
- Cup direction: bark side up (concave up) or bark side down (concave down). Bark side up cups smile (water collects); bark side down cups frown (water sheds).
- Localized to one board or running across multiple boards in a zone: single-board defect versus systemic.
- Cup magnitude: a barely visible curve versus a measurable depression where water collects.
- Position relative to sun and shade: south-facing boards cup harder; shaded boards stay flatter.
- Time since framing repair: did the cup appear within days, or was it present at the first walk-through?
The bounce repair often involved opening the deck and exposing the joists; that alone changes the moisture exchange under the boards. New blocking, sistered joists, or replaced ledger can shift airflow and create a one-sided drying pattern.
Quick checks
- Look at the board ends and the underside if accessible. Bark-side-up boards (rings curving down at the edges) cup upward (water collects). Bark-side-down boards cup downward (water sheds).
- Measure the gap between boards at the cupped area and at a flat area. Tight gaps starve the underside of airflow and accelerate cup.
- Probe the joist top where the cupped board lands. If the joist top is wet and the board underside is wet, the underside is not drying.
- Check the moisture content with a pin meter at the top of the board and at the underside. A delta greater than roughly 4 to 5 percent points at one-sided drying.
Isolation tree
- Single board cupping in a sunny zone, bark side up, other boards flat: orientation defect at install. Go to the orientation branch.
- Multiple boards cupping in a zone where you added blocking or new joists: airflow change. Go to the underside drying branch.
- Cup paired with end checks or splits at the same board: board defect or near end of life. Go to the board replacement branch.
- Cup paired with rotted joist top under the board: rot is the parent. Go to the substrate branch.
- Composite board cupping: a composite that visibly cups is either too far from supports or has cap damage. Different problem, replace.
Orientation branch:
- Bark side up is the wrong orientation for most species; the board cups upward in the sun. Flip the board (bark side down) if it is still serviceable; replace if it has split.
- Educate that the orientation choice is permanent; flipping reuses material but cup pattern reverses.
Underside drying branch:
- Boards over new blocking lose underside airflow if the blocking is full depth and the spacing between blocks is tight. Provide air-channels by drilling weep holes or cut the blocking back from the joist top.
- Boards over a sister at a single joist trap moisture on that joist. Verify the sister is not creating a moisture dam by sitting tight against the original joist top.
- Increase board gap to the species recommendation, typically 1/8 inch for kiln-dried softwood at install moisture, more for boards installed wet.
Board replacement branch:
- A cupped board with end checks or a split running with the grain is at end of life. Replace.
- After replace, verify orientation, gap, and finish on the new board match the field.
Substrate branch:
- A wet joist top under a cupped board points at the joist as the actual fault. Drying the joist (if rot has not started) and adjusting flashing or drainage is the cure; replacing only the board leaves the parent in place and the next board cups again.
Confirming diagnosis
- Pin-meter the top and bottom of the cupped board. Top at roughly 12 to 15 percent and bottom at 19 to 22 percent confirms one-sided drying. Even readings at both faces with cup present says orientation or board defect.
- Lift the cupped board. Underside wet and the joist top wet says trapped moisture; underside dry and joist dry says board geometry.
- After remediation (orientation flip, gap increase, weep, or replacement), revisit at 30 and 90 days. A board that re-cups in the same direction means the underlying drying imbalance was not resolved.
Remediation
- Orientation defect: flip the board bark side down or replace it.
- Underside drying imbalance: open weep paths in blocking, widen board gaps to the species spec, verify ventilation under the deck.
- End-of-life board: replace.
- Wet joist top: address flashing, drainage, or grade so the joist can dry; only then replace the board.
- Document the second-fault finding for the customer. The visual is that they paid for one fix and are getting a second observation. Show the photo evidence of the cup, the pin-meter readings, and the species and orientation diagnosis so the conversation is technical, not commercial.
Why the second fault appeared now
While the deck was bouncing, the customer's attention was on the larger motion. A cup of 1/8 inch reads as visual noise next to a bay of joists moving in unison. Stiffen the framing and the eye recalibrates: the cup is now the most prominent thing on the deck. Naming this pattern with the customer prevents the perception that the framing repair caused the cup. Where the repair actually contributed (new blocking changing underside drying), name that too.
