Deck Board Fastening - Screws vs Hidden Fasteners vs Plugs Decision Reference
Why this matters
The fastening method drives appearance, warranty eligibility, installation labor, future board replacement cost, and the failure mode when something goes wrong. The three options - face-screw, hidden side-groove clip, and pre-plug with color-matched cap - each pair correctly with a specific board type and a specific homeowner priority. Picking the wrong one voids the board manufacturer's warranty (every major composite brand restricts approved fasteners), creates fastener-shadow corrosion under coated steel screws on tropical hardwoods, or locks the homeowner into a board-replacement procedure they cannot perform themselves. This reference covers the decision logic so the right call is made before the order is placed, not after the boards arrive.
Face-screw with stainless or coated steel
The default for pressure-treated southern yellow pine, cedar, and most softwood decks. Two screws per board per joist, predrilled within 3/4 inch of the board edge per IRC R507.9.1.2. Required hardware:
- ACQ and CA-treated lumber per AWPA U1 UC4A requires hot-dip galvanized per ASTM A153 Class D or stainless 304/316 per ASTM F593. Standard zinc-plated screws fail in under 2 years on modern treated lumber.
- Coastal sites within 3,000 feet of salt water require 316 stainless regardless of board species (the chloride attack rate on 304 doubles in salt aerosol).
- Trim-head screws (#7 or #8) reduce the visible fastener head; star drive (T20 or T25) over Phillips eliminates cam-out on dense boards.
Choose face-screw when budget is the priority, the homeowner expects to replace individual boards in the future without specialty tools, or the board is hardwood denser than 50 lb/ft3 where hidden clips strip under thermal cycling.
Hidden side-groove clip systems
The default for composite decking (Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon) and grooved-edge hardwoods. Required on most composite warranties; using face-screws on a grooved composite voids the residential limited warranty on every major brand. Two clip families:
- Universal grooved clips (Cobra, CAMO LEVER, Trex hideaway) - polypropylene or stainless clip that drops into the side groove, fastener drives down at 45 degrees into the joist. Speeds installation to roughly the same rate as face-screw once the installer learns the rhythm. Built-in gap spacer (typically 1/8 to 3/16 inch).
- Brand-specific clips (TimberTech CONCEALoc, Trex Hideaway) - mandatory for warranty on those boards.
Choose hidden clips when the homeowner wants no visible fasteners, the board is grooved composite or grooved hardwood, the deck pattern includes diagonal or herringbone (where hidden clips simplify the cut layout), or the board manufacturer requires it for warranty. Reject hidden clips on ungrooved boards (the side-groove routing labor cancels the savings), on hardwood denser than ipe (clips strip), and on any deck where individual board replacement matters - removing a center board with hidden clips requires removing every board between it and the deck edge or cutting the board out and re-clipping with a face-screw repair clip.
Pre-drill, plug, and cap
The premium method for ipe, cumaru, garapa, and other Brazilian and African hardwoods. Procedure:
- Pre-drill the screw hole, counterbore to accept a 3/8 inch plug, drive a 316 stainless screw, glue and tap in a color-matched plug cut from the same board with a plug cutter, sand flush after the deck acclimates.
- Required for ipe because the wood is too dense to drive even stainless screws without pre-drilling, and tannin reaction with any non-stainless steel creates black bleed lines within 60 days.
- Approximately 4x the labor of face-screw and 2x of hidden clip per board.
Choose pre-drill-and-plug when the board is tropical hardwood, the architectural intent is a completely fastener-free top surface that survives 25-plus years (composite hidden clips do not last that long), or the homeowner requires the board to be re-sandable in the future without exposing fastener tracks.

Code and warranty cross-checks
- IRC R507.2.3 requires deck board fasteners to be corrosion-resistant per the AWPA UC4A treatment level.
- ASTM A153 Class D applies to hot-dip galvanized screws; standard "galvanized" zinc-plated screws are not the same and fail in treated lumber.
- ASTM F1667 covers polymer-coated deck screws.
