Carrier Infinity Greenspeed Communication Fault Tree

Why this matters

A Carrier Infinity Greenspeed system runs on a four-wire ABCD communicating bus, and when that bus drops the whole system goes dark in a way that looks like a board failure but usually is not. A communication loss between the Infinity touchscreen control, the variable-speed fan coil or furnace, and the Greenspeed inverter outdoor unit halts heating and cooling and throws a generic comm fault rather than a useful component code. Replacing a board on a bus fault is the single most expensive wrong call on these systems. The tree below isolates wiring, polarity, power, and addressing faults in order, so you find the broken link instead of parts-swapping a healthy inverter.

Symptom presentation

The Infinity control reads "Communication Failure" or shows a blank or frozen screen, or it boots but cannot see the outdoor unit. The system will not run in any mode. On a partial fault you may see the indoor unit operate while the outdoor inverter is unreachable, or the control cycles through reconnect attempts. Greenspeed inverter outdoor boards also flash status LEDs whose blink count maps to specific faults in the service manual; read those before assuming the bus is dead.

Quick checks

  1. Confirm 24 V at the indoor control board and at the outdoor inverter board, measured to common, before touching the bus. No power at either board changes the whole diagnosis from a data fault to a power fault.
  2. Verify all four ABCD wires land on matching terminals at every device: A to A, B to B, C to C, D to D. C and D are the communicating data pair; A and B carry power. A single misland on any one of the four breaks the bus.
  3. Check polarity. Reversed C and D between indoor and outdoor is the classic comm-fault cause after a board swap or a repull, and it produces a persistent outdoor-unreachable fault with the indoor side otherwise healthy.
  4. Inspect for a nicked or shorted bus wire where it passes through the cabinet knockout or the disconnect; a short here both kills comm and pops the indoor board fuse.
  5. Read the outdoor inverter board status LED blink pattern against the installation and service literature; the blink count often names the specific fault before you open a single terminal.
  6. Cycle power at the disconnect for a full 60 seconds and watch whether the control re-establishes the bus, which separates a soft lockup from a hard wiring fault.

Isolation tree

Branch A: Whole control dead or frozen

No power or a hard fault upstream of the bus.

  • No 24 V at the control: trace the transformer and the secondary fuse on the indoor board. A shorted bus wire pops the board fuse, killing the control. Find the short before refusing.
  • 24 V present, screen frozen: cycle power at the disconnect for 60 seconds. A genuine control lockup clears; a recurring freeze with a clean bus points to a failing touchscreen control.

Branch B: Control runs, outdoor unit unreachable

The indoor side is alive; the bus to the outdoor inverter is broken.

  • Measure continuity on each of the four ABCD conductors from indoor to outdoor with the wires disconnected at both ends. An open conductor, often at the outdoor disconnect or a wire-nut splice, drops comm.
  • Check C and D polarity outdoor to indoor. Swapped data pair gives a persistent outdoor comm fault with the indoor unit otherwise healthy.
  • Confirm 24 V reaches the outdoor inverter board on A and B. No power outdoor means the inverter never joins the bus.

Branch C: Intermittent comm dropouts

The bus connects but drops under load or with temperature change.

  • Loose terminal screws on the ABCD lands expand and contract; retorque every connection.
  • A bus wire routed alongside high-voltage compressor leads can pick up noise on long runs; separate the low-voltage bus from line-voltage conductors.
  • Corroded outdoor splices in a non-weatherproof connection drop comm in damp weather. Re-make splices with sealed connectors.

Branch D: Addressing or configuration fault

After a board replacement the system may need to relearn its components.

  • Run the Infinity control setup and the install check from the service menu so the control re-enumerates the fan coil and the Greenspeed inverter.
  • A mismatched or outdated control software version against a newer inverter board can refuse to communicate; verify compatible firmware per the current Carrier service bulletin.

Confirming diagnosis

Confirm the broken link before quoting a part. The diagnostic sequence that holds up: 24 V present at both boards, all four ABCD conductors continuous end to end, C and D polarity correct, terminals torqued, and the outdoor inverter LED reading a comm-restored or normal pattern after the fix. If every wiring check passes and the bus still will not establish, isolate the boards by disconnecting the outdoor unit and confirming the control communicates with the indoor board alone; reintroduce the outdoor unit to localize the failed device. Only after wiring, power, polarity, and addressing are all proven good does a board become the suspect.

Remediation

  • Open or shorted bus conductor: repull or splice the ABCD cable with sealed weatherproof connectors and correct polarity. Where the break is at the disconnect, re-make the splice with a listed connector rather than a field tape wrap that lets moisture back in.
  • Blown indoor board fuse from a bus short: clear the short first, then replace the fuse; replacing the board without clearing the short pops the new fuse and burns the warranty part. A nicked conductor at a cabinet knockout is the usual short.
  • Loose or corroded terminations: retorque every ABCD land indoor, repair and seal outdoor splices, and confirm the data pair did not loosen during the prior service that triggered the fault.
  • Reversed C and D data pair: re-land the pair so C meets C and D meets D end to end; this single correction clears the most common post-service comm fault.
  • Firmware mismatch: update the control or inverter per the current Carrier bulletin, then run install setup so the control re-enumerates the matched components.
  • Confirmed failed control or inverter board: replace only after wiring, power, polarity, and addressing all prove good, then run the full Infinity install and component-learn sequence and verify a normal status pattern on the outdoor board LED.
