Mini-Split Outdoor Unit Ices the Bottom Pan in Heat Mode: Decision Tree
Why this matters
A ductless heat pump that builds a block of ice in the outdoor base pan during heating is a drainage-and-defrost interaction, not necessarily a refrigerant fault. In heat mode the outdoor coil is the evaporator and condensate plus defrost melt water must drain out the bottom; if the base pan drain is blocked, the unit sits in a freeze-thaw puddle, or the base-pan heater (where fitted) is dead, that water refreezes into a growing ice slab that lifts the fan, blocks airflow, and eventually fails the defrost cycle. The customer sees an iced unit and assumes low refrigerant. The fix depends on whether drainage, the defrost cycle, mounting height, or the pan heater is the cause. This tree isolates them before anyone recovers refrigerant.
Symptom presentation
The clean version: in heating during cold, wet, or freezing-rain weather, ice accumulates in and around the bottom of the outdoor unit and on the base pan, sometimes encasing the lower coil and fan. The unit still runs and defrosts the coil face, but the melt water refreezes at the bottom instead of draining. Heating output drops as the ice grows.
Variants that change the tree:
- Whole coil frosts and the unit never defrosts: defrost control or sensor fault.
- Ice only at the bottom pan, coil face clears on defrost: drainage or pan-heater problem.
- Unit set directly on the ground or a flat slab in a snow region: mounting height.
- Frost-back along the line set to the indoor unit: charge or airflow, a different tree.
Quick checks before touching refrigerant
Confirm the defrost cycle works on the coil. Watch a heating run in cold weather; the unit should periodically reverse, the outdoor fan stops, the coil warms and sheds frost, then resumes heating. If the coil face clears on defrost but the melt water freezes at the bottom, the defrost is functioning and the problem is drainage, not defrost.
Inspect the base pan drain and mounting. The outdoor unit must sit high enough above grade or snow line for melt water to clear, with the base-pan drain holes open and a drain elbow or pan-heater fitted in hard-freeze climates. A unit mounted low on a flat slab in a snow region drains into a puddle that refreezes under it.
Isolation tree
Branch 1: drainage and mounting.
- Base-pan drain holes plugged with leaves, ice, or a missing drain elbow: clear the holes and install the manufacturer's drain elbow so melt water exits below the unit.
- Unit mounted too low: raise on a wall bracket or a snow-stand so the base sits clear of accumulated snow and the drain can discharge to grade or a gravel bed, not a puddle.
- Drain water discharging onto a flat surface that refreezes back under the unit: route the discharge away with a heated drain line or to a gravel sump in severe climates.
Branch 2: base-pan heater (where equipped).
- Units rated for cold climates carry a base-pan heater that keeps the drain path open below freezing. Meter the heater for continuity and its control logic; a failed pan heater lets melt water refreeze. Replace per the OEM part number for that model.
Branch 3: excessive defrost water versus drain capacity.
- In freezing rain or heavy wet snow, melt and precipitation can exceed the drain's clearing rate even with everything working. Confirm by weather correlation; the remedy is mounting height, a heated drain, and a snow hood, not a refrigerant change.
Branch 4: defrost or charge contributing.
- If the coil itself is not defrosting properly (sensor, board, reversing valve), the unit ices top-down and the bottom accumulation is secondary. Verify the coil clears on defrost first; if it does not, divert to the defrost-control tree. Confirm heating-mode charge by the OEM method (most ductless units charge by weight per line-set length) only after drainage and defrost are cleared.
Confirming the diagnosis
After the corrective step, run the unit through several heating-and-defrost cycles in cold weather and confirm the base pan stays clear, the drain discharges freely, and ice does not rebuild under the fan. In hard-freeze climates verify the pan heater energizes. Document mounting height, drain-elbow installation, pan-heater operation, and the weather conditions. Reserve any refrigerant work for a unit where drainage, mounting, defrost, and the pan heater are all confirmed and the coil still frosts abnormally.
