New Furnace Locks Out on First Firing: Decision Tree
Why this matters
A new furnace that locks out on its first firing is throwing an installation fault, and the control board usually tells you which one if you read the flash code. The common first-firing lockouts are flame-sense failures, pressure-switch/venting faults, gas-supply problems, ignition faults, and polarity/grounding issues, all of which trace to how the unit was installed and piped, not to a defective board. Resetting and walking away leaves the customer with a furnace that fails on the next cold night. This tree uses the lockout code plus a structured sequence-of-operation check to isolate the installation error so the first firing also becomes a clean commissioning.
Symptom presentation
Newly installed gas furnace attempts to start on a heat call, then locks out: inducer may run, igniter may glow, burners may light briefly or not at all, and the board flashes a fault code before going to soft or hard lockout.
Variants:
- Igniter glows, no gas/no light, lockout after a few tries: gas supply, valve, or ignition fault.
- Burners light then drop out in a few seconds, repeated, then lockout: flame-sense (rectification) failure or polarity/ground.
- Inducer runs but burners never attempt, lockout: pressure switch not closing (venting/condensate) or a safety open.
- Nothing happens on a call, board shows a fault: control power, polarity, limit, or roll-out switch open.
Quick checks before deep diagnosis
Read the diagnostic flash code first. Modern boards report pressure-switch, flame-sense, limit, roll-out, and ignition-lockout faults distinctly. The code aims you at the right branch immediately.
Verify line polarity and ground. Flame rectification needs correct hot/neutral polarity and a solid equipment ground. A new install on reversed polarity or a missing ground will light burners then lose flame sense and lock out. Confirm 120V hot-to-ground and ground continuity.
Confirm gas is on and purged. A new gas line that was never opened, never purged of air, or set to the wrong pressure will fail to light or light erratically. Verify the manual valve is open, the line is purged, and inlet pressure is to spec.
Isolation tree
Branch 1: pressure-switch / venting lockout (inducer runs, no burner attempt).
- Pressure switch not closing: check vent and intake for blockage, the correct termination and slope, a kinked or disconnected pressure tubing, and a clogged condensate trap on a condensing furnace (a full trap backs pressure and opens the switch).
- Measure inducer pressure against the switch setpoint. Correct the vent/intake/condensate fault rather than jumping the switch. A jumped pressure switch is a safety defeat.
Branch 2: ignition fault (igniter glows, no light, or no spark).
- No gas at the manifold: confirm the gas valve energizes on the call and that inlet and manifold pressure meet the nameplate. Adjust manifold pressure to spec; correct an undersized or unpurged gas line.
- Igniter weak or open (hot-surface) or no spark (spark ignition): confirm igniter resistance/operation; replace if defective (shipping damage possible but confirm). Verify igniter position relative to the burner.
Branch 3: flame-sense / rectification lockout (lights then drops out, repeats).
- Reversed polarity or poor ground: correct first; rectification fails without proper polarity and ground.
- Weak microamp flame signal: measure flame-rod current in microamps against the board's minimum. A new flame rod positioned poorly, or a manifold pressure too low to fully envelop the rod, gives a marginal signal. Reposition/clean the rod and correct manifold pressure.
Branch 4: limit / roll-out / safety open.
- High-limit open from no/low airflow: confirm the blower runs, filter is in and not blocking, dampers are open, and external static is in range. Low airflow trips the limit and locks out.
- Roll-out switch open: indicates flame roll-out from a blocked heat exchanger or vent; do not reset and run until the cause is found. Inspect and correct.
Branch 5: control power / configuration.
- No 24V or wrong thermostat configuration: confirm transformer output, C-wire, and that the stat is set for the correct gas-heat staging. Correct any low-voltage fault or dip-switch/configuration mismatch from the install.
Confirming the diagnosis
Once the fault is corrected, run a full ignition sequence and watch the board complete: inducer prepurge, pressure switch closes, igniter warms, gas valve opens, flame establishes, flame signal above the board minimum (record the microamps), blower energizes on the fan-on delay, and the unit runs to the limit without lockout. Perform a combustion analysis at steady state and set manifold pressure to the nameplate; confirm CO in spec and a stable blue flame.
Document inlet and manifold pressure, flame-sense microamps, pressure-switch operation, temperature rise across the heat exchanger (within the nameplate rise range), static pressure, and the combustion readings on the commissioning sheet.
Never jumper or defeat a pressure switch, limit, or roll-out switch to clear a lockout; these are combustion-safety devices and bypassing them can cause flue-gas spillage, carbon monoxide, or fire. Correct gas piping, venting, and combustion per NFPA 54 and verify CO with a combustion analyzer before returning the furnace to service. Confirm a working CO alarm is present.
