Get it wrong and you create an unmatched system that runs at the wrong charge, loses rated efficiency, voids warranty coverage, and strands the customer with a refrigerant the supply chain is phasing out. The decision turns on refrigerant type, the age spread between the surviving components, AHRI match availability, and warranty status. The matrix below sorts those variables so you recommend the option that actually serves the equipment, not the one that looks cheapest on the line item.

The options

Replace the coil only: Swap the failed evaporator coil, keep the existing condenser and air mover. Lowest disruption. Valid only when the condenser is young, healthy, and the new coil forms an AHRI-certified match with the existing outdoor unit on the same refrigerant.

Replace the condenser and coil as a matched pair: Replace both heat exchangers together, keep the furnace or air handler cabinet and blower. Restores a certified, charged-to-spec match. The standard answer when the outdoor unit failed and the indoor coil is old.

Replace the full system: New condenser, new coil, new air handler or furnace. Highest cost, cleanest result. The answer when components span a wide age gap, the refrigerant is obsolete, or the blower and cabinet are at end of life too.

When replace coil only wins

  • The condenser is recent (roughly under 5 years) and operating normally.
  • The new coil forms a published AHRI-certified match with the existing condenser and the same refrigerant.
  • The failed coil is under manufacturer parts warranty, making a like-for-like coil the obvious move.
  • The blower, furnace, and ductwork are sound and correctly sized.
  • The refrigerant is current production, not a phasedown casualty.

A young, healthy condenser does not justify replacement just because the coil failed. Match a new coil to it and move on.

When replace condenser and coil as a pair wins

  • The condenser failed (compressor, coil, or controls) and the indoor coil is old.
  • The two components are far enough apart in age that keeping one creates an immediate mismatch risk.
  • The existing coil cannot form a certified match with any available current condenser.
  • The furnace or air handler cabinet and blower are still serviceable and correctly sized, so the cabinet stays.

Replacing both heat exchangers as a certified pair restores rated capacity and a known charge. This is the most common right answer for a mid-life system with one failed outdoor unit.

When replace full system wins

  • The refrigerant is obsolete and the surviving components run on it. Pairing a phased-out coil with a new condenser is a dead-end match.
  • The age spread is wide: a failed component on a system old enough that the survivors will fail within a season or two.
  • The blower or furnace is also at end of life, undersized, or the wrong stage for a modern variable-capacity condenser.
  • No AHRI-certified match exists between current condensers and the legacy indoor equipment.

When the math says one component fails this year and the rest follow next year, a full system avoids two disruptive truck rolls and the labor of charging an unmatched orphan twice.

Refrigerant phasedown: A system on a refrigerant being phased out under the AIM Act and EPA rulemaking cannot be expanded with new matched components indefinitely; supply tightens and price climbs. A failed component on phased-down refrigerant pushes the decision toward full replacement on a current refrigerant.

AHRI certified match: An unmatched coil and condenser is not just inefficient, it is uncertified. The AHRI Directory lists which combinations are rated together. If no certified match exists for the surviving component, mix-and-match is off the table and the decision moves up a tier.

Warranty status: Manufacturer warranties generally require matched components and registration. A part-only replacement that breaks the matched set can void remaining coverage. Confirm registration and terms before recommending a partial swap.

Charge and metering compatibility: A condenser and coil pair carries a factory-specified charge and metering device. Mixing a coil rated for one capacity with a condenser of another forces field charging outside any published chart, which is a callback waiting to happen.
