Replace TXV vs Clean Coil vs Recharge on Low Superheat: Decision Matrix
Why this matters
Low superheat at the suction service port can mean an overfeeding expansion valve, a coil so dirty it cannot absorb heat, or simply an overcharge, and the three call for completely opposite actions: replace a part, wash a coil, or recover refrigerant. Pick wrong and you flood the compressor or chase a leak that does not exist. The reading that ties them together (superheat below target, often under 5 F) hides three different physical conditions. This matrix lays out the discriminating measurements so a tech standing at the unit can route a low-superheat call to the correct fix instead of defaulting to a charge adjustment, which is the most common and most damaging wrong turn.
The decision variables
Before judging, capture a stable, full-load reading set:
- Superheat at the suction service valve (target depends on metering type; TXV systems run 8 to 12 F at the evaporator).
- Subcooling at the liquid line (the second axis; distinguishes overcharge from valve overfeed).
- Total external static and evaporator face condition (the airflow axis).
- Outdoor ambient and saturated condensing temperature.
- Whether the symptom appeared suddenly (valve or charge event) or gradually (fouling).
A single number cannot decide; superheat plus subcool plus airflow together resolve the three causes.

How to read each branch
Overcharge (low SH, high SC): liquid backs into the condenser and the evaporator floods, dropping superheat while subcool climbs. The fix is recovery to the OEM charge by weight, then verification by subcool, not a valve. Confirm the condenser airflow is fine first so you are not chasing a false high subcool.
TXV overfeeding (low SH, normal SC): the valve is feeding too much refrigerant at the right total charge. The usual culprit is a sensing bulb that lost thermal contact or is mounted wrong, telling the valve the suction is warmer than it is. Re-clamp and insulate the bulb on clean bare copper before condemning the valve; a large share of "bad TXV" calls are bulb-mounting faults. Replace the valve only when bulb mounting, equalizer, and head pressure are confirmed and superheat still parks low.
Dirty coil / low airflow (low SH, low static or frost): a coil that cannot absorb heat or an airflow restriction lets the coil run too cold, depressing superheat and often frosting. The fix is washing the coil and replacing the filter, then re-measuring. Adding or removing refrigerant on this condition makes it worse.
Confirming after the fix
Whatever branch you took, re-run a stable full-load cycle and confirm superheat returns to the target band for the metering type with subcool at the OEM value and airflow in spec. Log superheat, subcool, static, and outdoor ambient before and after. A correct, stable superheat with correct subcool and clean airflow is the only confirmation that the right action was taken.
Never adjust refrigerant charge to correct a low superheat without first confirming subcool and airflow. Pulling refrigerant from a system whose low superheat is caused by a dirty coil or an overfeeding valve starves the system and can still flood the compressor on the swing. Diagnose the cause, then act.
