Rheem R801S Furnace Integrated Control Board Diagnosis

Why this matters

The Rheem Classic R801S series (single-stage, 80 percent AFUE, hot surface ignition) uses the Rheem 62-104210-XX integrated furnace control (IFC) board. When this furnace fails to fire, the diagnostic LED is the only data the tech gets without metering. Misreading the flash code, or skipping the inducer pressure switch verification, sends parts trucks back twice and stretches a Saturday no-heat call into Monday. Rheem will reject warranty IFC replacements when the flame sensor cleaning step and gas valve voltage verification are not documented.

Identify the board and the flash code map

The 62-104210-XX board is shared across Rheem Classic 80, Ruud Achiever 80, and several Weatherking branded R801s. The LED is on the bottom edge of the board, visible through the blower door sight glass. The control reads from the IFC software revision sticker on the board itself; the flash code table is printed on the inside of the blower compartment door. Common codes:

  • Steady ON: normal, no call for heat
  • Steady OFF: no 24 V to board; check transformer secondary and 3 A fuse on the board
  • Slow flash (1 Hz): normal, call for heat in progress
  • Rapid flash: line voltage polarity reversed
  • 2 flashes: external lockout, pressure switch closed when it should be open at idle (welded relay or blocked port)
  • 3 flashes: pressure switch did not close on inducer call
  • 4 flashes: high-limit switch open or rollout switch open
  • 5 flashes: flame sensed without a call for heat (gas valve leaking through or board failure)
  • 6 flashes: ignition lockout after 3 trials for ignition
  • 7 flashes: low flame sense microamps (under 0.5 microamps DC)
  • 8 flashes: low flame sense with successful ignition; cleaning required soon

Sequence of operation reference

Knowing the correct sequence lets you intercept it at the failure point:

  1. Thermostat closes R-W. IFC receives 24 V on W terminal.
  2. IFC checks pressure switch is open (proves it is not stuck closed). If closed at this stage: 2 flashes.
  3. IFC energizes inducer motor for 15 second pre-purge.
  4. Pressure switch closes when inducer pulls vacuum. If it does not close: 3 flashes after timeout.
  5. IFC energizes hot surface igniter (HSI) for 17 to 34 second warm-up depending on revision.
  6. IFC opens gas valve, monitors flame sense rod for at least 0.5 microamps DC within 7 second trial.
  7. If flame proved, IFC drops igniter, calls for blower after 30 second fan-on delay.
  8. On thermostat satisfied, gas valve closes, inducer post-purges 15 seconds, blower runs off-delay (60 to 180 sec depending on jumper).

Component-by-component diagnostic

Work the failure point from the flash code:

3 flashes (pressure switch did not close)

Verify the inducer is actually running. If silent, check 115 VAC at the inducer wire harness from the board. If voltage is present and inducer does not run, replace inducer. If inducer runs, pull the tubing from the pressure switch port and feel for vacuum at the inducer port nipple. No vacuum: cracked heat exchanger, blocked flue, or cracked inducer housing. Strong vacuum but switch does not close: replace pressure switch (Rheem 42-101963-XX or equivalent; check the inches of water column rating stamped on the switch matches the original).

4 flashes (high-limit or rollout)

Open the burner compartment. A tripped rollout switch (red disc-style manual reset) indicates flame rollout from a blocked heat exchanger or excessive negative pressure in the burner box. Do not simply reset and walk away; find the cause. A tripped high-limit indicates blower failure, dirty filter restricting airflow, or undersized return ducts. Measure temperature rise across the heat exchanger; spec is 35 to 65 F on R801S (printed on rating plate).

6 flashes (ignition lockout)

Verify HSI glows red-orange during warmup. If dark, check 115 VAC at the HSI terminals during warmup window. Voltage absent: board output failure. Voltage present, igniter dark: replace HSI (Rheem 62-22441-03). Verify gas pressure at the gas valve inlet (between 5 and 7 inches water column natural gas, 11 to 13 wc LP) and at the manifold during trial (3.5 wc nat gas, 10 wc LP, per the rating plate).

7 or 8 flashes (low flame sense)

Clean the flame sense rod with fine emery cloth or a green Scotch-Brite pad. Never use steel wool; embedded particles damage the rod. Reinstall, re-test, measure flame microamps with a DC microammeter in series with the flame sense wire. Reading below 1.0 microamp after cleaning indicates a degraded ground path (corroded burner-to-cabinet ground strap) or a worn rod past replacement.

When to replace the board

Replace the IFC only when:

  • 24 V is present on R terminal but no output on any other terminal during a confirmed call for heat
  • LED does not light at all with 24 V confirmed on the board
  • Visible burn marks or swollen capacitors on the board
  • Software revision is known buggy (Rheem service bulletins reference specific lot codes; check Rheem ProPartner before ordering)

Always verify the gas valve, HSI, and pressure switch operate correctly to spec before replacing the board. Board returns under Rheem warranty are rejected at high rates when the underlying component fault was not addressed.

Power down at the disconnect before pulling the IFC. Removing the board with 24 V on the secondary risks a back-EMF spike from the inducer or blower relay that will destroy the replacement board before it is fully seated.
