Why this matters
The smart thermostat is the #1 HVAC accessory in 2025 - 65%+ of new install/replacement jobs include one. Customer expectation: their HVAC works with their existing smart-home (Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit). Tech expectation: the thermostat installs in 30 min + works without callback. The reality has nuances - wiring compatibility, communicating-equipment proprietary protocols, multi-zone systems, geofencing limits - that turn a "simple thermostat swap" into a 3-hour comedy of errors. Get this category right + the install is profitable + customer happy; get it wrong + you eat callbacks for weeks.
The smart-thermostat market (2025)
- Google Nest Learning (4th gen): auto-learn schedule (controversial), strong Google Home + Matter, works without C wire on most systems (power steal).
- Ecobee SmartThermostat Premium: built-in Alexa + air-quality sensor, excellent HomeKit + Matter, best remote-sensor support, C-wire required (or PEK), best multi-stage + heat pump support.
- Honeywell Lyric T6/T9/T10: solid all-around, works well in Honeywell systems, robust geofencing; T10 has room sensors like Ecobee.
- Mysa, Sensibo, Cielo: ductless + line-voltage electric heat specialty.
- Carrier Infinity / Trane ComfortLink / Lennox iComfort: required for variable-speed communicating equipment; sold only with matching equipment; limited smart-home integration.
Wiring compatibility
Older systems (1980s - early 2010s): often R+W+Y+G with no C wire; some heat-only R+W; some cool-only R+Y. Modern: R+W+Y+G+C with possible O/B (heat pump reversing) + W2/Y2 (two-stage) + W3/Y3 (three-stage).
Smart thermostats need constant 24V (R or Rh+Rc + C), W (heat), Y (cool), G (fan), O/B for heat pump, multiple W/Y for staging, AUX for emergency heat. No C wire? Three options: pull new wire, add-a-wire adapter (Venstar T1900, Triwave PWX - uses unused G), or manufacturer power kit (Ecobee PEK, Honeywell adapter). Heat pump considerations

Common install + service issues
- Keeps rebooting → power steal insufficient; install C wire
- Won't connect to WiFi → firmware update needed OR 5GHz-only network (most stats are 2.4GHz only)
- Wrong temperature reading → sensor near supply register or sun-exposed wall; relocate

Add to maintenance contracts: annual WiFi reconnect, battery replacement, schedule + geofence verification, firmware update; add to base.
The single most-overlooked detail in smart thermostat installation is C-WIRE VERIFICATION on the bench BEFORE pulling the old thermostat. Look at the old wiring - if no C wire, plan now (C-wire pull, adapter, or PEK), not after the customer's HVAC is offline. The "I'll figure it out when I get there" approach has cost techs hours of after-hours overtime + has cost customers an evening with no heat. Pre-call: "Can you send me a photo of your current thermostat with the cover off?" Customer takes 30 seconds; tech avoids 2 hours of head-scratching.
