Thermostat Wiring Reference

Overview

Thermostat wiring is mostly standardized but renovation wiring + old electromechanical installs are field-littered with mis-labeled and re-purposed wires. This reference covers what each terminal does, common color conventions, and the gotchas that turn a 30-minute thermostat replacement into a 3-hour debug.

Specifications

Standard low-voltage thermostat conductors (24 VAC), with typical color + function:

Materials

  • Wire: 18 AWG thermostat cable (typically 5 - 8 conductor). 22 AWG works but is increasingly inadequate for modern smart thermostats with heavy current draw.
  • Standoff transformer required: smart thermostats often need a "C-wire adapter" (Venstar Add-A-Wire) when only 4 conductors are in the wall.
  • Splice approved: B-connectors or push-in connectors. Wire nuts are acceptable but bulky in shallow boxes.

Performance

Voltage at the thermostat (with no call) should read:

  • R to C: 24 - 28 VAC
  • R to W, R to Y, R to G: 0 V at idle; 24V when called

Voltage drops below 22 VAC at the thermostat indicate either:

  • Wire too long (rare in residential)
  • Open neutral (most common - the C-wire connection at the furnace is missing or loose)

Safety

NEVER short R to C at the thermostat - even briefly. This shorts the 24V transformer secondary directly to ground and burns the transformer fuse (or the transformer itself on older systems). Always test individual terminal voltages against ground (C-wire), not by jumping wires together.

Notes

  • Heat-pump O/B confusion: most American-brand heat pumps use O (energize-on-cool). Some Trane/American Standard older units use B (energize-on-heat). Mis-setting the thermostat's O/B switch swaps heating and cooling commands - the unit appears to "work backwards." Always verify on a heat call vs cool call which mode actually produces hot air.
  • The C-wire problem: pre-2015 thermostats were mostly battery-powered and didn't need C. Modern Wi-Fi thermostats DO need C. Common-wire solutions on 4-conductor cables:
    • Add the C-wire if the conductor is at both ends (often there but unconnected)
    • Use a Venstar Add-A-Wire adapter
    • Add a separate 2-conductor cable for power
  • 24V short circuits on heat-pump systems: a heat pump's outdoor wiring is exposed to weather. A chewed wire (rodent) or storm damage can short G to C or Y to C - symptoms appear as "thermostat dead" or "the fan runs all the time." Visually inspect the outdoor wiring before assuming a thermostat failure.
  • The W to G/Y misconnection: a homeowner-installed thermostat with W wired to G makes the fan run on heat calls without the heat itself. Easy spot-check before replacing the equipment.

Troubleshooting

  • Thermostat dead, no display: missing C-wire OR low battery (if battery-powered). Verify 24V at R-to-C terminals at the thermostat. No voltage = check the C-wire path back to the furnace control board.
  • Heat works, cool doesn't (or vice versa): O/B reversing-valve setting incorrect (heat pumps) OR Y-wire interrupted somewhere.
  • All zones call at once on a zone system: zone panel transformer overloaded OR a stuck zone damper telling the panel "still calling" when it shouldn't.
