Brown Rings Expand After Rain Disease vs Chemical Decision Tree
Why this matters
Circular brown rings that get larger after a rain split into two completely different causes with opposite fixes: a soilborne fungal organism (fairy ring) that the water spreads and feeds, or a chemical event (fertilizer streak overlap, a spilled gas can, dog urine, a herbicide drip) that the rain mobilizes and washes outward. Treat a chemical burn with fungicide and you waste product on a non-disease while the soil stays toxic; treat fairy ring as a spill and you ignore an expanding fungal mat that will keep marching across the lawn. The "expands after rain" detail is the key fork, and reading the ring's geometry, color band, and soil feel tells you which world you are in before you commit a treatment.
Symptom presentation
Fairy ring presents as one or more rings or arcs, often with a dark green stimulated band, a dead/brown band, or both, sometimes with mushrooms popping after wet weather. Type 1 fairy ring shows dead grass; Type 2 shows a dark green ring with no dead zone; Type 3 shows mushrooms only. The soil inside the ring is frequently hydrophobic (water beads and runs off rather than soaking), which is why the affected band browns harder after the lawn cannot rewet. Chemical injury presents as a ring or irregular blotch matching the shape of the application or spill, sharp non-fungal margins, often a more random or streak-aligned pattern, and no stimulated green band, no mushrooms, and no white mycelial mat in the thatch.
Quick checks
- Probe the soil moisture in the brown band. Hydrophobic, dry, water-repellent soil that beads water is the fairy-ring fingerprint, the fungus coats soil particles and blocks wetting.
- Dig a plug and smell it. Fairy ring soil often has a distinct musty/mushroom odor and a white fungal mat (mycelium) threading the thatch and upper soil.
- Look for a green stimulus ring. A dark green halo around the dead band means a soil organism is releasing nitrogen; chemical burns do not produce this.
- Map the pattern to human activity. A streak aligned with the spreader path width, a single round dead spot near a parked mower or fuel can, or a dog-track pattern points to chemical, not fungal.
Isolation tree
Branch A, fairy ring (soilborne fungus). True circle or arc, often with a dark green stimulated band and/or mushrooms; hydrophobic soil in the band; white mycelial mat and musty odor in the plug. Rain spreads spores and the dry-soil browning worsens, so "expands after rain" fits. This is a disease/soil-water problem.
Branch B, fertilizer/chemical burn. The ring or blotch matches an application or spill shape, has sharp non-biological edges, no green stimulus band, no mushrooms, no mycelium. Soil may test high in salts/conductivity. Rain mobilizes the soluble material and washes the burn outward, so it also "expands after rain," but the mechanism is chemistry, not fungus.
Branch C, dog urine / localized salt. Small round spots, often with a green outer rim (dilute nitrogen edge) and a dead center, clustered along a dog's travel path or near a tie-out. High soil salts, no fungal signs. A subtype of chemical injury.
Branch D, hydrocarbon/herbicide spill. A single dead spot where gas, oil, or concentrated herbicide hit; soil may smell of fuel; nothing regrows for an extended period because the soil itself is contaminated. Distinct from soluble-salt burn.
Confirming diagnosis
Branch A: Confirm hydrophobicity with a wetting test, drip water on the band; if it beads and runs for many seconds before soaking, the ring is fairy ring. Confirm the white mycelial mat under a hand lens and the musty odor. Branch B: Run a soil electrical-conductivity (salts) test in the affected band versus healthy turf; markedly elevated salts with no fungal mat confirms fertilizer/salt burn. Branch C: Trace the spot pattern to animal traffic and confirm small, round, green-rimmed spots with high soil salts. Branch D: Smell and probe for hydrocarbon; a fuel odor or oily sheen in the plug confirms a spill, and a simple germination test (seed will not sprout in the contaminated soil) confirms toxicity rather than disease.
Remediation
Branch A (fairy ring): The first-line fix is breaking the hydrophobic soil, core aerate the ring, apply a wetting agent (soil surfactant), and irrigate deeply to rewet the band and dilute the fungal byproducts. Mask Type 2 green rings with balanced nitrogen so the whole lawn matches. Use a labeled fairy-ring fungicide (FRAC 3 or FRAC 11 azoxystrobin-class) watered in with a surfactant only when cultural measures fail; the fungus lives in soil, so chemistry alone without rewetting underperforms. Branch B (salt/fertilizer): Flush the soil with heavy irrigation to leach soluble salts below the root zone, then re-seed/sod once conductivity drops. Branch C (urine): Flush promptly after observed events; long-term, redirect the dog and consider a designated mulch potty area. Branch D (hydrocarbon): Excavate and replace contaminated soil, the ground is toxic and will not support turf until removed; backfill with clean soil, then seed or sod.
Fairy-ring fungicides and turf surfactants are FIFRA-labeled products. Apply only at labeled rates and sites, observe the restricted-entry interval, and use the specified PPE. For a confirmed hydrocarbon spill, fuel and oil in soil may trigger state hazardous-material handling and disposal rules; do not landfill contaminated soil against local regulation.
