Drought Stress Diagnosis

Symptom

Customer reports the lawn is "dying" or "going brown" during a hot dry stretch. The lawn looks dull green, tan, or completely brown depending on severity. Footprints stay visible after walking. The customer's first reaction is often to water more aggressively or apply fertilizer, both of which can make things worse.

Drought stress is the most common summer lawn complaint in cool-season turf areas. The diagnosis is important because:

  • Genuine drought stress vs heat dormancy looks similar but needs different treatment
  • Disease, pest, or chemical damage can mimic drought
  • Water restriction policies in many areas limit response options
  • Customer expectations need management (recovery time, watering schedules)

How drought stress develops

Lawn requires approximately 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week to maintain active growth. When water supply drops below this:

  1. Leaf cells lose turgor pressure
  2. Leaves wilt and roll inward
  3. Color shifts toward tan or blue-green
  4. If stress continues, leaves brown and die back
  5. Crown of the plant survives if not heat-damaged
  6. Roots may die if surface soil is bone-dry for extended periods

Cool-season grasses (Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, ryegrass) enter "summer dormancy" at extended drought; the leaf dies back but the crown survives. Recovery occurs when adequate water returns.

Warm-season grasses (bermudagrass, zoysia, St. Augustinegrass) have higher drought tolerance; bermudagrass can survive months of drought.

Causes ranked by frequency

The order matters because the response differs.

Diagnostic decision tree

Step 1: Verify the basics

  • Recent watering pattern: how often, how long
  • Recent weather: rainfall amount in past 14 days
  • Customer's water restriction status
  • Recent lawn care: fertilization, herbicide, insecticide applications
  • Recent damage events: vehicle, construction, animal

Step 2: Soil moisture test

Push a screwdriver or soil probe into the lawn:

  • Easy push 3 to 4 inches: adequate moisture
  • Hard push but penetrates: marginal moisture
  • Cannot penetrate: dry soil; drought is confirmed contributor

Compare wet and dry areas of the lawn (if mixed pattern).

Step 3: Check the crown

Pull a tuft of grass from a suspect-dead area:

  • If the crown (white stem base) is firm and white: alive, will recover
  • If the crown is dry, brown, or crumbles: dead, will not recover
  • If the crown is mushy or black: disease, not drought

Cool-season grass in summer dormancy has alive crowns; the leaves are brown but the plant recovers with cooler weather and water.

Step 4: Look at the pattern

Pattern Likely cause
Random scattered patches Drought, possibly disease
Sharp boundaries (square, line) Chemical damage, irrigation zone failure
Circular rings Disease (summer patch, fairy ring, dollar spot)
One specific area dry, surrounding wet Sprinkler zone failure
Damaged areas pull up easily Insect (grubs especially)
Lawn in high-traffic areas damaged Wear plus drought

Step 5: Hydrophobicity test

Pour water onto a brown area:

  • Water absorbs within seconds: normal soil, drought
  • Water beads up and runs off: hydrophobic soil (water-repellent waxy layer)

Hydrophobic soil develops in drought-stressed sandy soils. Wetting agents (surfactants) restore infiltration.

Step 6: Sprinkler test

Run each zone for 5 minutes:

  • Verify each zone activates
  • Verify each zone produces visible spray
  • Walk the lawn during operation; identify dry spots

A zone that doesn't activate or has broken heads delivers no water; specific drought patches result.

Step 7: Pest check

For grub damage:

  • Pull up the suspect area
  • Look for white C-shaped grubs in the soil (1/4 to 1 inch long)
  • Threshold: 5+ grubs per square foot triggers treatment

For chinch bugs (warm-season turf):

  • Look at lawn edge with magnifying glass
  • Black insects 1/8 inch long
  • Suck juice from grass stems

Response per cause

Genuine drought

  • Deep, infrequent watering (1 to 1.5 inches once or twice per week)
  • Apply early morning (4 to 8 AM)
  • Recovery 1 to 3 weeks for moderate stress
  • Cool-season turf in summer dormancy may not recover until cooler temperatures

Heat dormancy (cool-season turf in summer heat)

  • Water lightly (avoid over-watering when grass isn't actively growing)
  • Wait for cooler weather (early fall)
  • Recovery is automatic; do not push with fertilizer

Soil compaction

  • Core aeration in fall
  • Topdress with compost
  • Repair the underlying issue (foot traffic, vehicles, dogs)

Hydrophobic soil

  • Apply wetting agent (surfactant): Aquatrols, Brettyoung, Hydrogel
  • Re-water thoroughly
  • Repeat as needed in subsequent stress events

Disease

  • Identify the specific disease (different article)
  • Apply appropriate fungicide
  • Reduce nitrogen until disease is controlled
  • Improve cultural conditions (mowing, watering, air movement)

Insect damage

  • Treat with appropriate insecticide
  • Reseed damaged areas

Chemical damage

  • Stop further application
  • Heavy watering to dilute residue
  • Reseed damaged areas after waiting interval per product label

Sprinkler failure

  • Repair sprinkler heads, valves, controllers
  • Adjust schedule

Watering recommendations during drought

The right watering pattern (where permitted):

  • Deep and infrequent: 1 to 1.5 inches in one or two waterings per week
  • Better than shallow daily (which encourages shallow roots and disease)
  • Morning hours (4 to 8 AM) reduce evaporation
  • Avoid evening watering (encourages disease)

For drought-restricted areas:

  • Allow cool-season turf to enter summer dormancy
  • Maintain warm-season turf with reduced water
  • Reseed in fall when restrictions lift
