Why this matters
Brown, declining turf has three common authors (grubs, drought, and disease) and they are easy to confuse from a standing height. The fastest field test that separates them is the tug test: turf that lifts like carpet with no roots is grub or root-rot, turf that stays anchored is drought or foliar disease. Sequencing the tug test first, before reaching for a hose or a sprayer, saves the wrong intervention. The classic failures are watering a grub-killed lawn (the roots are already gone, water does nothing), spraying a fungicide on a drought patch, or curatively treating grubs that are not there. This tree orders the cheap, decisive observations (tug, dig, count) so the diagnosis is locked before any product or scheduling change is made.
Symptom presentation
- Irregular brown patches, sometimes coalescing, sometimes following exposure or coverage.
- Turf in the patch may pull up easily (no roots) or stay firmly anchored.
- Secondary signs: skunk/raccoon/bird digging (grubs), blue-gray footprinting then brown (drought), rings/spots/mycelium (disease).
- Onset tied to a hot dry stretch (drought), warm humid weather (disease), or late summer/fall feeding (grubs).
Quick checks
- Tug first. Grab the brown turf and pull. Lifts like a loose carpet with severed white roots = root loss (grub or root-rot). Stays anchored = drought or foliar disease. This one pull splits the whole diagnosis in half.
- If it lifts, peel back 1 sq ft and count grubs. Count at or above threshold (commonly about 6 to 10 per sq ft in healthy turf, lower in stressed turf) plus the carpet-pull confirms grubs.
- If it stays anchored, dig a plug. Bone-dry profile, hydrophobic, worst on slopes/sun = drought. Adequate moisture with lesions/rings = foliar disease.
- Hand-lens the anchored brown. Lesions, mycelium, and a defined patch pattern point to disease over drought; early-morning dew often reveals fungal mycelium webbing the canopy.
- Read the secondary signs. Skunk, raccoon, or bird digging points to grubs; blue-gray footprinting ahead of the brown points to drought; rings and smoke-ring margins point to disease.

- Turf pulls up like carpet, white roots severed, grubs visible at the root zone, secondary animal digging -> white grubs. The larvae sever roots, so the canopy detaches. Fix is a threshold-driven curative (correctly timed and watered in) plus overseeding the dead zones.
- Turf pulls up but few or no grubs, roots brown/mushy, soil saturated and sour, often a defined disease pattern -> root-rot disease (Pythium root rot, summer patch) or anaerobic root death. Confirm by the rotted roots, saturation, and pattern, with a lab assay to name the pathogen. Fix is to correct the wet/anaerobic driver first, then a pathogen-matched fungicide.
- Turf stays anchored, soil dry below surface, hydrophobic, worst on slopes and south exposure, footprinting precedes brown -> drought / dry spot. Roots are intact; the plant is firing from lack of water. Confirm with the dry/hydrophobic dig and a coverage check. Fix is deep irrigation, surfactant, and coverage repair, not a fungicide.
- Turf stays anchored, soil moisture adequate, lesions/rings/mycelium present, warm humid conditions -> foliar disease (brown patch, dollar spot, leaf spot). Confirm with hand-lens lesions and the patch pattern, lab assay if the program decision warrants. Fix is to correct moisture/humidity drivers, then a pathogen-matched fungicide.
- Turf stays anchored but the brown follows mower paths, exhaust tracks, or a coverage stripe -> mechanical or irrigation cause masquerading as drought or disease. Confirm by reproducing the line on the ground. This branch matters because spraying or watering it does nothing; the fix is mechanical or coverage correction.
Confirming diagnosis
The tug test is the decisive first split because it separates root-loss causes from canopy-intact causes in seconds. From there the count (grubs at or above threshold under a peeled flap), the rotted-root-plus-saturation read (root-rot), the dry-hydrophobic dig plus a coverage check (drought), and the lesion/pattern hand-lens (foliar disease) each confirm a single branch. The drought-versus-foliar-disease split among anchored turf hinges on the moisture read: a dry profile says drought, adequate moisture with lesions says disease, and confusing them sends a fungicide onto a dry patch or a hose onto a disease. Always sample and count before any curative insecticide, and confirm a pathogen by sign or lab assay before any fungicide, so neither product goes onto a problem it cannot fix. Document the negatives so a wrong cause is ruled out on the record, and recheck the next season since recurrence ending is the final proof.
Remediation
- Grubs: confirm threshold, apply a labeled curative insecticide with heavy water-in (accepting lower efficacy on large third-instar grubs), then overseed dead patches.
- Root-rot / anaerobic: correct over-watering and drainage and core aerate first, then a labeled pathogen-matched fungicide (mefenoxam/propamocarb for Pythium; DMI/QoI per label for patch diseases).
- Drought / dry spot: deep, infrequent irrigation, soil surfactant on hydrophobic spots, fix coverage gaps; the turf recovers from the crown if not fully dead.
- Foliar disease: water in early morning, improve airflow, reduce thatch, then a labeled pathogen-matched fungicide on a resistance rotation.
Curative grub insecticides and turf fungicides are restricted by FIFRA label; follow the label rate, watering-in, re-entry interval, and any pollinator-protection statements. Confirm the pest or pathogen before applying a restricted product.
