Leaf Removal + Fall Cleanup

Purpose

Define the fall leaf removal + property cleanup service - the highest-revenue 8-week window of the year for cool-climate lawn care businesses. Typical pricing. The mowing route revenue drops 50 - 70% in October; leaf cleanup fills that gap + sets up spring service renewals.

Scope

Applies to:

  • Residential leaf removal (October - December in temperate climates)
  • Hardscape cleanup (driveway, patio, walks)
  • Gutter check (visual; not full gutter cleaning unless contracted)
  • Bed cleanup + perennial cutback

Excludes tree pruning (separate scope), gutter cleaning (separate trade - Gutters), large-scale property cleanup requiring chipper / specialty equipment beyond standard.

Responsibilities

  • Crew lead runs the protocol + coordinates with property layout
  • Crew (2 - 3 typical) executes blowers + cleanup
  • Customer clears patio furniture + outdoor items if feasible before visit

Procedure

Pre-arrival (5 minutes)

  1. Confirm fuel + blower readiness. Backpack blowers MUST be tested before route start.
  2. Verify tarps + trailer capacity. Average 2,000 - 5,000 cubic feet of leaves per residential cleanup.
  3. PPE: eye protection (mandatory), hearing protection (mandatory), dust mask in heavy dry-leaf conditions.

On-site setup (10 minutes)

  1. Walk the property. Note: planting beds, water features, exposed roots, pet runs, fragile lawn ornaments.
  2. Position trailer or tarp drop zone closest to the heaviest leaf accumulation.
  3. Identify wind direction; plan to blow with the wind toward the disposal zone.

Blowing technique (60% of total time)

  1. Backpack blower at full throttle for moving piles; reduce to 50 - 75% near beds + landscape.
  2. Work systematically: outside perimeter first, blow inward + toward disposal zone.
  3. Long sweeps; don't ping-pong back over already-cleared areas.
  4. Blow leaves OFF beds, not deeper into them. Many beds will be near-clean if blown the right direction.
  5. Hardscape: walks + driveway require crisp definition; blow leaves OFF to lawn or disposal zone, then sweep / blow clean.

Mulch-mowing pass (alternative for thin layers)

For light leaf cover (less than 2 inches of leaves on lawn):

  1. Mow with mulching deck + sharp blades
  2. Cross-pattern in two directions
  3. Result: chopped leaf chips that decompose into the soil within 4 - 6 weeks; adds nitrogen + organic matter to turf
  4. Customer education: this is HEALTHIER for the lawn than removal IF leaf depth is manageable

For heavy leaf cover (above 2 inches), removal is required - mulched material won't decompose in time + smothers the lawn.

Collection + haul-out

  1. Tarp drag: chain or roll 2 - 4 large tarps to dump truck or trailer
  2. Vacuum truck (commercial route): leaf-vac unit on trailer or pickup; shreds + collects
  3. Loose blown into truck bed: feasible for small jobs only

Standard truck or trailer holds 8 - 15 cubic yards of leaves (loose) - plan accordingly. Compacted at the dump site or composted on-site if customer requests.

Bed + perennial cleanup (per scope)

  1. Cut back perennials per species (most: 4 - 6 inches; ornamental grasses: spring instead; coneflower / black-eyed Susan: leave standing for winter bird food if customer prefers)
  2. Hand-pull remaining annuals + weeds
  3. Light fluff of mulch where displaced
  4. Bed edges crisped with stick edger

Final pass + walkthrough

  1. Blower over all hardscape one more time
  2. Drag a leaf rake along bed edges for sharpness
  3. Confirm gutters appear clear from ground (note any debris for customer; do NOT climb without ladder kit + gutter scope)
  4. Final photo of completed property; sent to customer

Backpack blowers are the LOUDEST tool in lawn care + the leading source of customer + neighbor complaints. Many municipalities + HOAs restrict gas blower use to specific hours OR ban them entirely (California 2024 ban, Washington D.C. ban, Chicago restrictions). CONFIRM local ordinance BEFORE the route. Showing up with a gas blower in a banned jurisdiction = ticket to customer + reputation damage. Battery blowers (EGO, Stihl 36V) are required equipment for the future + many regulated markets now.

Acceptance Criteria

  • Lawn surface free of substantial leaf cover
  • All hardscape clear of leaves + debris
  • Bed surfaces blown clean (not stripped of mulch)
  • All leaves removed from property OR consolidated in designated compost area
  • Photos taken; customer signs field report or receives email recap

Safety

  • Hearing protection mandatory (gas blowers above 100 dB at operator ear)
  • Eye protection mandatory (debris)
  • Hydration in cool weather (lawn cleanup is high-exertion; dehydration sneaks up)
  • Two-handed operation on blowers; secure footing on wet leaves + slopes
  • Trailer hitch + ramp inspection before haul-out
