Mower Cuts Uneven Side to Side Decision Tree

Why this matters

A commercial zero-turn that leaves an obvious step in the cut across its width is one of the fastest ways to lose a route. The customer notices on the first mowing after the fault appears and wonders if the crew is sloppy. The fault is usually one of five things: deck out of level, blade wear uneven, spindle bearing failed, anti-scalp wheel set wrong, or tire pressure unequal. The wrong call - sharpening blades on a deck that has a failed spindle - leaves the cut still uneven and the warranty period burned. The tree below sorts the five causes in field-probability order so the equipment leaves the shop with the cut squared.

Symptom presentation

Pattern A: cut is taller on one side of the deck by 1/4 to 1 inch. Pattern B: cut is uneven in a fixed pattern (left front high, right rear low, etc.). Pattern C: cut is uneven only at speed (fine at idle, terrible at full ground speed). Pattern D: a single blade leaves stripes or rough finish. Pattern E: deck cuts evenly side to side but scalps on every rise.

Quick checks - 15 minute pass

  1. Park on a flat, level concrete pad (parking lot or shop floor). Confirm flat with a 4 foot level on the pad.
  2. Set deck to a known height (typically 3 inch). Disengage PTO, shut down engine, set parking brake.
  3. Measure deck height from concrete to the cutting edge of each blade (rotate blade tip to the front and to the side). Record four measurements: front left blade tip, front right blade tip, side blade tip left, side blade tip right.
  4. Spin each blade by hand. Listen for grinding, rocking, or excessive lateral play in the spindle.
  5. Tire pressures: confirm all four are at OEM spec. Even a 5 psi difference between the same axle drops the deck on the low side by 1/8 to 1/4 inch.

Isolation tree

Step 1 - Tire pressure check

Most production mowers list deck-leveling-specification tire pressures explicitly. Hustler Super Z, Toro Z Master, Scag Tiger Cat, Exmark Lazer Z, John Deere Z500 series each have a spec - typically 8-15 psi rear, 14-22 psi front.

Set all tires to spec. Retake measurements. If the deck is now level, the call closes here - educate the operator on tire-check frequency.

Step 2 - Side-to-side deck level

Deck leveling spec for the major commercial decks:

  • Left-to-right: equal within 1/8 inch (toe-to-toe across the deck width).
  • Front-to-rear pitch: deck nose-down by 1/8 to 1/4 inch (deck "rakes" forward by this amount; varies by manufacturer).

If side-to-side is off:

  • Check the deck hanging chains, lift links, or pivot bushings. Worn pivot bushings let the deck droop unequally.
  • Check the deck mount bolts. A bolt that has backed off causes the deck to ride low.
  • Most commercial decks have a tensioning adjustment (jam nuts on a threaded link, or a hex bolt on a quadrant). Adjust per manufacturer service manual to bring blade tips equal.

Step 3 - Blade condition

Pull each blade. Inspect:

  • Blade weight on a balancer. New blades 18-24 oz typical for 21-25 inch commercial blades. A blade more than 2 oz lighter than its mate is excessively worn.
  • Cutting edge: dull edges fold grass rather than cut, leave a striped pattern.
  • Lift surface: blades have an air-lift wing. A worn wing reduces airflow and the discharge side cuts taller because grass is not standing for the cut.
  • Bent blades: lay against a flat surface, check for visible bow. A blade hit on a curb or rock bows and the cut on that side rises.

Replace blades in matched sets to keep balance and lift equal. Sharpen to 30-degree edge angle, balance on a magnetic balancer.

Step 4 - Spindle bearing test

Grasp each blade and rock vertically and laterally. Lateral play more than 1/16 inch indicates spindle bearing wear. Audible click or grinding when spinning by hand indicates failure. Replace spindle bearing or full spindle assembly.

A worn spindle lets the blade tip drop at speed even though it sits at the right height at rest. This is the Pattern C signature.

Step 5 - Anti-scalp wheel set

Anti-scalp wheels (rollers on the deck perimeter) carry the deck weight over rises. If set too low, they hold the deck up and the cut is taller than dial setting. If set too high, the deck scalps on every rise (Pattern E).

Adjust anti-scalp wheels to ride 1/4 to 3/8 inch above the cutting plane on the level pad. Most decks have 4-6 wheels; adjust uniformly per service manual.

Step 6 - Deck shell deformation

A deck that has hit a stump or large rock can be bent. Visual inspection from underneath:

  • Bent deck skirt: cuts unevenly on the bent side.
  • Cracked deck shell at the weld: drops on one side.
  • Damaged spindle mounting plate: lets the spindle tilt.

A bent deck needs to be repaired or replaced. Field repair on a bent commercial deck is rarely durable.

Step 7 - Operator pattern (not equipment)

If equipment checks out level, look at operator habit:

  • Cutting at top speed in tall, wet, or thick grass overloads the deck and produces a poor cut.
  • Cutting too low for the grass type or season (cool-season cool weather invites scalping at 2 inch).
  • Worn drive belt slipping the deck speed.

Confirming the diagnosis

Re-measure deck height after each adjustment, retest cut on a flat lawn sample at known mowing speed. Document the pre-and-post measurements.

Remediation

  • Tire pressure: correct to spec, post a check-once-a-week reminder for the operator.
  • Side-to-side level: adjust pivots and links to spec.
  • Worn or bent blade: replace in matched set.
  • Spindle bearing: replace bearing or spindle assembly.
  • Anti-scalp wheel: set to spec.
  • Bent deck: replace or send to dealer for shell straightening.
  • Operator habit: train.

Mower deck leveling is a 30-minute service. Doing it weekly on commercial routes during the season prevents the next callback.
