Turf Disease Identification + Treatment
Why this matters
Turf disease misdiagnosis costs the customer their lawn + the contractor their reputation. The same brown patch can be brown patch fungus, drought stress, fertilizer burn, grub damage, or pet urine - five different treatments, four of them harmful if applied to the wrong problem. Field-level disease ID is a technical skill that separates a service rep from a turf-care professional.
The disease triangle
Three things must align for disease to develop:
- Susceptible host (turf species + cultivar)
- Pathogen (fungus, bacteria, virus)
- Favorable environment (temperature + moisture + leaf wetness duration)
Break any one + the disease fails. Cultural practices (mowing, watering, fertilization) break the triangle more reliably than fungicides do. Fungicides are tools, not strategy.
Most common residential turf diseases (continental US)
Brown patch (Rhizoctonia solani)
- Hosts: tall fescue, ryegrass, bentgrass, zoysia
- Season: hot + humid summer (above 80°F daytime, above 65°F night)
- Symptoms: circular patches 6 inches - 3 feet, brown turf with a darker "smoke ring" border in morning dew
- Cultural: reduce nitrogen in summer, water early morning so blades dry by afternoon, mow at upper end of species range
- Fungicide: azoxystrobin (Heritage), propiconazole (Banner Maxx), thiophanate-methyl
Dollar spot (Clarireedia jacksonii)
- Hosts: bentgrass, Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescue, hybrid Bermudagrass
- Season: 60 - 85°F, heavy dew, low nitrogen
- Symptoms: silver-dollar-sized straw-colored spots; expand + coalesce into irregular patches; hourglass-shaped lesions on individual blades
- Cultural: maintain adequate nitrogen, mow morning to remove dew, irrigate deeply but infrequently
- Fungicide: propiconazole, chlorothalonil, boscalid
Pythium blight (Pythium spp.)
- Hosts: cool-season grasses; ryegrass especially
- Season: hot + saturated soil (above 85°F + wet); often follows heavy summer rain
- Symptoms: greasy / slimy patches in low spots; cottony growth in early morning; spreads along drainage paths
- Cultural: improve drainage, reduce nitrogen in summer, NEVER mow when wet
- Fungicide: mefenoxam, propamocarb - Pythium is an oomycete, not a true fungus; many standard fungicides don't work
Red thread (Laetisaria fuciformis)
- Hosts: perennial ryegrass, fine fescue, Kentucky bluegrass
- Season: cool + wet spring + fall (50 - 70°F)
- Symptoms: pink / red web-like threads on blade tips; patches 2 - 24 inches, ragged outline
- Cultural: fertilize with nitrogen (low-N lawns are most susceptible); often resolves without fungicide
- Fungicide: rarely needed; azoxystrobin if severe
Large patch / brown patch on warm-season (Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2 LP)
- Hosts: zoysia, St. Augustine, centipede, Bermuda
- Season: spring + fall transition, soil temps 50 - 70°F
- Symptoms: circular patches 3 - 25 feet (much larger than cool-season brown patch); blade base rot
- Cultural: reduce fall nitrogen on warm-season turf; improve drainage
- Fungicide: azoxystrobin, fluxapyroxad
Snow mold (gray + pink - Microdochium / Typhula)
- Hosts: cool-season grasses
- Season: late winter under prolonged snow cover OR cold + wet
- Symptoms: matted gray / pink patches as snow recedes
- Cultural: avoid fall nitrogen late, mow short for last cut, rake matted areas in spring
- Fungicide: pre-snow application of PCNB, propiconazole
Differential diagnosis (what looks like disease but isn't)
- Drought: gradual yellowing, blade folding, footprints stay; not patches
- Pet urine: distinct circular dark green ring around dead center
- Fertilizer burn: lines or rectangles matching applicator pattern; tip-down browning
- Grub damage: turf lifts like carpet; thin roots; raccoon / skunk digging
- Chinch bug: yellow patches in hot sunny areas (Bermuda, St. Augustine); spotted feeders on close inspection
- Compaction: thinning along walkways or pet paths
- Pythium vs Pythium-look-alike heat stress: confirm with morning-dew cottony growth before fungicide
When in doubt, send a sample to the state university turf extension lab. Most states offer disease ID for with 3 - 7 day turnaround. The cost is trivial against a wrong fungicide application that fails. Texas A&M, Penn State, Rutgers, Purdue, NC State, + UF all run accessible labs. Save the customer call: "We sent it for confirmation; treatment plan in 5 days." That positions you as a professional, not a guesser.
Fungicide application notes
- Rotate FRAC groups to prevent resistance (track applied + alternate modes of action)
- Water in immediately if label calls for it (azoxystrobin) OR leave on the blade for contacts (chlorothalonil)
- Re-application interval per label, typically 14 - 28 days
- Granular fungicide is convenient for residential but less precise than liquid
Cultural baseline (prevents 70%+ of disease)
- Mow at the upper end of species range
- Water deep + infrequent, early morning only
- Fertilize per species + season, not by calendar
- Aerate compacted soil annually
- Overseed thin areas before disease establishes
