Why this matters
Two Benjamin Moore waterborne products dominate residential cabinet repaints, and they cure on different chemistries that change how you handle the doors. Advance is a waterborne alkyd that flows and levels like an oil for a glassy brushed or sprayed finish, but it cures slowly and stays soft for days, so stacking and reassembly timing is the make-or-break step. Scuff-X is a self-crosslinking acrylic engineered for fast block resistance and scuff durability, so it returns to service sooner and is friendlier on occupied jobs. Running the same procedure on both is how crews get fingernail-soft doors or premature block marks. This procedure walks the shared prep and the product-specific application, recoat, and cure handling so the finish is hard, even, and on schedule for whichever product the job specs.
Materials and prep
Pull all doors, drawer fronts, and hardware; label every piece and its location. Set a clean, dust-controlled spray or brush area with good airflow and stable temperature, ideally in the comfortable mid-range the TDS specifies (roughly 50 to 90 F, not in direct sun or a hot garage). Gather: degreaser (cabinets carry kitchen grease that wrecks adhesion), 120 to 220 grit sandpaper and sanding sponges, tack cloths, a bonding/adhesion primer (such as a Benjamin Moore bonding primer or STIX-class product) for glossy, oil, or factory-finished surfaces, the chosen topcoat (Advance or Scuff-X), fine-finish spray tips (a fine cabinet tip, commonly in the 8 to 12 thousandth range) or a quality fine-bristle brush and microfiber/foam roller, an approved extender if conditions warrant, and racks/standoffs so coated pieces dry without contact.
- Degrease every surface; rinse and dry. Grease residue is the leading cause of cabinet-coating adhesion failure.
- Scuff-sand all surfaces to dull the existing finish (120 to 180 on bare/old paint, 220 between coats); break every glossy spot. Vacuum and tack off all dust.
- Fill dents and grain as needed; spot-sand flush.
- Prime: on bare wood, glossy factory finish, oil, or stain-prone wood, apply a bonding/stain-blocking primer and let it cure per its TDS; sand lightly (220) and tack. A correctly bonded primer is what lets either topcoat hold.
Step-by-step
Shared application: spray for the best leveling (fine-finish tip, thin even passes, 50 percent overlap, wet edge maintained) or brush/roll with a fine brush plus a tipping-off pass on details. Keep coats thin and uniform; both products build their performance over two to three thin coats, not one heavy one. Maintain the surface temperature and humidity in the TDS comfort band.
Advance (waterborne alkyd) specifics:
- Apply thin; Advance self-levels, so resist over-applying or back-brushing once it starts to set or you will drag the leveling.
- Respect the long recoat interval. Advance commonly needs around 16 hours (and longer in cool or humid conditions) before recoat; recoating too soon traps the slow-curing film and leaves it soft. Verify the current TDS for the exact interval.
- Sand lightly (320) between coats once each is fully dry to the touch and the recoat window is met; tack off.
- Apply the second (and third if needed) coat the same way.
- Plan cure before handling. Advance stays soft for days and reaches full hardness over an extended cure (commonly several days to a couple of weeks). Do not stack doors, reinstall, or subject to normal use until it has cured firm; rushing this is what produces fingernail-soft finishes and stuck doors.
Scuff-X (self-crosslinking acrylic) specifics:
- Apply thin even coats; Scuff-X sets and blocks faster than Advance, so keep a wet edge and work efficiently. Add the approved extender only if heat/low-humidity is collapsing open time.
- Recoat within the product's shorter interval (typically a few hours, per the TDS); it returns to recoat readiness faster than Advance.
- Sand lightly between coats if needed and tack.
- Apply two to three thin coats total for full scuff and block performance.
- Cure handling: Scuff-X develops block resistance comparatively quickly, so doors can be handled and reinstalled sooner than Advance, but still honor the TDS cure time before heavy daily use and before stacking faces together.
Inspection and QA
After cure, inspect under raking light for runs, sags, orange peel, or dry-spray; verify a uniform sheen with no flashing across rails and panels. Check film hardness by gentle fingernail pressure on a hidden edge, a properly cured film resists marking; an Advance door that still dents means it has not cured long enough, not that it failed. Confirm block resistance before reassembly by pressing two scrap-coated samples face to face under light weight per the ASTM D4946 logic; if they stick or mar, wait. Verify adhesion on a hidden door with a cross-cut tape test (ASTM D3359); aim for 4B to 5B. Reinstall hardware and rehang only after the topcoat passes hardness and block checks; label-matched pieces return to their original openings. Advise the customer of the full-cure timeline, especially for Advance, before cleaning or heavy use.
