How to Repair and Texture Drywall Before Paint
Why this matters
Painters who can also repair drywall close more jobs + at higher tickets. A customer with a nail-pop or a basketball-sized hole calling for "just paint" doesn't realize their problem is half drywall. The painter who can fix both wins the contract + earns 30-50% more per visit than wall-paint-only competitors. Drywall repair runs a solid hourly labor rate at materials cost ~10% of price.
Repair categories
| Damage | Method | Time | Typical price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nail pop | Reset + skim | 5-10 min/each | Lowest tier |
| Scuff/scratch | Spot-skim | 10-15 min | Comparable to nail pop |
| Hole < 2" | Mesh + skim | 20-30 min | A modest step up |
| Hole 2"-6" | California patch | 30-60 min | Roughly double the small-hole tier |
| Hole 6"-12" | Hot-patch (wood backing) | 45-90 min | A further step up |
| Hole > 12" | Cut to studs + replace section | 1.5-3 hr | A large jump, several times the small-hole tier |
| Water-damaged ceiling | Cut + replace section | 2-4 hr | The highest tier on this list |
| Full wall texture match | Texture spray | 1-3 hr | Comparable to the large-hole tier |
Tools + materials
- Setting-type compound (Easy Sand 20, 45, or 90 - number is set time in minutes)
- Ready-mix all-purpose compound (USG Plus 3, ProForm)
- Mesh tape (self-adhesive, fiberglass)
- Paper tape (for inside corners + butt joints - stronger but trickier)
- Drywall scrap (1/2" + 5/8" - 5/8" is code for fire-rated walls, garage ceilings)
- Drywall screws + 1x furring strips
- Putty knife 4", 6", 10"
- Hawk + trowel (for finish skim)
- Mud pan
- Drywall saw (jab saw or oscillating multi-tool)
- Drywall sander (pole sander or random orbital with vacuum)
- Texture spray gun (hopper + air or 110V electric)
- Texture spray hopper + compressor
- Dust collection / HEPA vacuum
- Drop cloths + plastic sheeting
Procedure - nail pop
- Find the stud behind the popped nail
- Drive a new screw 1-2" above + 1-2" below the pop, into the stud
- Pop the loose nail with a hammer dimple OR pull it
- Apply setting compound over both screw heads + the dimpled nail
- Smooth flat with 4" knife
- Set, sand, apply second coat with 6" knife
- Sand smooth (220-grit + dust-collection sander)
Procedure - California patch (medium hole)
For 2"-6" hole:
- Cut a drywall scrap 4" larger than the hole on each side
- From the scrap's BACK, score a square the exact hole size
- Snap the scored square; peel the back paper away, leaving 2" of front paper around the gypsum core
- The result: a gypsum plug with paper "wings"
- Apply compound to the wall around the hole
- Press the plug in; squish paper wings flat against wall
- Smooth + skim over the wings
- Set, sand, recoat 2-3 times to feather
- Sand to feather edge invisible
Procedure - hot patch (larger hole, 6"-12")
- Cut a square around the hole (clean lines)
- Slip 1x furring strips behind drywall on each side (vertical OR horizontal as fits)
- Screw furring to existing drywall (drywall screws into furring)
- Cut a drywall patch to fit the square
- Screw patch to furring
- Tape edges with mesh OR paper tape
- Compound + skim 3 coats: tape coat, fill coat, finish coat
- Sand smooth
Procedure - full replacement (large damage)
- Cut OUT damaged section to nearest studs
- Verify no plumbing/electrical/insulation issue caused damage (water leak fixed first!)
- New drywall cut to fit, screwed to studs
- Mesh tape + 3 coats compound on all joints
- Sand + prime + paint
Texture matching
Most U.S. residential walls have texture: orange peel, knockdown, popcorn (ceilings, asbestos risk pre-1980), skip-trowel, smooth (level 5).
Orange peel (most common): texture hopper + air, low pressure, fine nozzle. Spray a test panel first to dial in.
Knockdown: orange peel + knock down with a 10" knife after 5-15 minutes (timing matters; too soon smears, too late no knock).
Skip trowel: hand-applied with a Spanish-style hawk + trowel. Hardest to match.
Popcorn: aerosol cans OR hopper with chunky material. PRE-1980 popcorn may contain asbestos - DO NOT scrape without testing.
Smooth (level 5): skim entire wall, sand, prime. Sees in raking light forever; pros only.
Test panel before texture spray
ALWAYS spray a piece of scrap drywall to dial in the texture. Wall behind a door or behind a furniture group makes a good first test if no scrap available. Customers see the test panel + approve before committing the wall.
Drying + sanding
- Ready-mix compound: 4-24 hours per coat depending on thickness + humidity
- Setting compound: set time per product (20, 45, or 90 minutes; named on bag) - much faster
- Sanding: pole sander or vacuum-attached random orbital
- Dust collection MANDATORY - drywall dust is brutal (silicosis-risk if heavy + chronic)
Test for fully dry by touch - cool damp = not dry, room-temp dry = ready. Painting over damp compound = bubbles + adhesion failure.
Prime + paint
After repair:
- Prime ALL repaired areas (PVA primer or stain-blocker if water-damaged)
- Spot-prime can SHOW through topcoat at certain angles ("flashing")
- For visible-light walls (entries, dining, hallways), prime ENTIRE wall corner-to-corner
- Two finish coats over prime
Acceptance criteria
- No visible patch shadows in raking light
- Texture matches surrounding wall (best you can with manual blend)
- No fasteners protruding
- Sanded smooth, no ridges
- Customer signed + photos taken
Common pitfalls
- Skim too thick first coat: cracks during dry
- No primer before paint: patch flashes through topcoat
- Wrong tape: mesh in inside corners is weaker than paper
- Failing to feather: patch edge visible from sidelight forever
- Texture mismatch: rookie giveaway. Test panel always
- Painting damp mud: bubbles + adhesion failure
- Ignoring water cause: re-damage in 6 months
- Scraping popcorn pre-1980 without testing: asbestos exposure
Safety considerations
- Drywall dust + sanding: HEPA vacuum + dust mask + ventilation
- Pre-1980 popcorn ceiling: TEST FIRST. Asbestos abatement is licensed work
- Sharp utility knives + saws: cut away from body
- Compound + paint with respirator if sprayed
- Ladder work for ceilings: properly braced
- Eye protection always
The "California patch" technique (paper wings instead of furring + backing piece) is the highest-paid technique most painters don't use. A 3-4" hole that would take 90 minutes with hot-patch takes 25 minutes with California patch + looks identical when finished. Practice on a scrap panel until you can do it cleanly - adds a meaningful weekly sum to a painter's productivity once mastered.
