After Descaling The Tankless, Now An Error Code Decision Tree
Why this matters
You ran a descaling flush on a tankless water heater, reconnected everything, and now it throws an error code instead of making hot water. The descale did not break the heat exchanger; the service routine disturbed something. The most common culprits trace directly to the procedure: isolation (service) valves left in the wrong position, air left in the heat exchanger, the inlet filter screen reinstalled wrong or clogged with flushed scale, or a flow sensor confused by trapped air. Reading the code and walking an ordered tree gets the unit back online fast, versus condemning a flow sensor or board that is fine and just needs the valves opened and the air bled.
Symptom presentation
The unit powers up but faults. The code character matters: ignition/flame codes (no flame, ignition failure), flow/water codes (insufficient flow, no flow detected), overheat codes, and combustion/airflow codes each route differently. Tied to the descale, the highest-probability codes are flow-related (valves, air, screen) and ignition-related (gas not fully restored, air in the line). Capture the exact code from the display and the manufacturer's code list before turning a single valve.
Quick checks
- Service/isolation valve positions. The number-one post-descale error. Descaling requires the service valves in flush position; left there, the unit cannot draw or deliver water and throws a flow or no-flow code. Confirm both isolation valves are returned to the open run position and the flush ports are closed.
- Inlet filter screen. Descaling loosens scale that lands in the cold-inlet screen. A clogged or misseated screen starves flow and trips flow codes. Pull, clean, and reseat it.
- Air in the heat exchanger. Air trapped after the flush gives erratic flow readings and ignition problems. Purge by running hot taps until flow is steady and air-free.
- Gas restored. If gas was shut during service, an ignition code follows incomplete restoration. Confirm the gas valve is fully open and any air in the gas line is purged.
- Condensate and drain. On condensing units, a condensate trap dried out or disturbed during service can trip a related fault.
Tankless units are gas-fired (or high-amperage electric). Verify gas connections are leak-free after any service that touched gas, and confirm proper venting and combustion before return to service. Carbon monoxide is a lethal hazard. Descaling solution is an acid; follow the chemical's handling and the unit's flush procedure, and never pressurize a unit with isolation valves in the wrong position.

Branch A: flow / no-flow / insufficient-flow code. Water path. Check, in order: isolation valves returned to open run position and flush ports closed; inlet filter screen clean and seated; whole-house flow adequate (no closed valve upstream); air purged. Most post-descale flow codes resolve at the valves or the screen.
Branch B: ignition / no-flame code. Combustion path. Confirm gas fully restored and the line purged of air, then that water flow is adequate (the unit will not ignite without proven flow). Air in the heat exchanger can cause flow to read marginal and abort ignition. Purge air, confirm gas, retry.
Branch C: overheat / high-limit code. Scale or air. If descaling was incomplete, residual scale still restricts the exchanger and overheats it; if air is trapped, hot spots form. Re-verify flow, purge air; if it recurs, the descale may need repeating or the exchanger is heavily fouled.
Branch D: combustion / venting / airflow code. Usually unrelated to the water flush but check the condensate trap (condensing models) and that no vent or intake was disturbed during service access.
Branch E: code clears on power-cycle then returns. Intermittent flow or air. Re-purge thoroughly; a flow sensor reading air bubbles intermittently mimics a sensor fault. Confirm steady, air-free flow before judging the sensor.
Confirming diagnosis
- Valve and screen audit: with isolation valves correctly open and the screen clean, a flow code that clears confirms the procedure, not a part, was the fault.
- Steady-flow test: run a hot fixture; stable flow with no sputter confirms air is purged and the flow sensor reads true.
- Ignition on demand: the burner lighting and holding on a normal draw confirms gas and flow are restored.
- Manufacturer code reference: cross-check the displayed code against the maker's table to confirm you are in the right branch.
- No recurrence across cycles: several clean draws with no fault confirms the fix held.
Remediation
- Return isolation valves to run, close flush ports. The single most common fix.
- Clean and reseat the inlet filter screen, removing flushed scale debris.
- Purge air by running hot fixtures until flow is steady and silent.
- Fully open gas and purge the gas line if gas was shut for service; verify no leaks.
- Repeat the descale if overheat/flow codes persist due to incomplete scale removal; address hard-water source with treatment to prevent rapid re-scaling.
- Reset the trap on condensing units; confirm venting undisturbed.
