Faucet Cartridge Wear: Replace Now vs Monitor Drip Decision Tree
Why this matters
A worn faucet cartridge is the most common cause of a dripping or hard-to-control faucet, but not every weep means the cartridge is finished. A tech who reflexively replaces a cartridge at the first sign of a drip may be swapping a sound part when the real fault is a seal, a seat, or debris. A tech who tells the customer to live with a drip may be missing wear that will worsen into a constant run, scald-temperature creep on a single-handle mixer, or internal leakage that damages cabinetry. The decision is whether the observable wear and leak behavior warrant replacing the cartridge now or monitoring it. The cues are in how the faucet drips, how it feels, and what cleans up versus what is permanently scored.
Symptom presentation
Typical presentations: a steady drip from the spout with the handle fully off, a drip that changes with handle position, hot and cold cross-mixing inside a single-handle valve (lukewarm when set to full hot), a handle that is stiff, gritty, or loose, or temperature/volume control that has gone vague. Some faucets weep only on hot (heat-accelerated seal hardening). Others drip only at certain handle angles, which points to a localized seat or ceramic-disc defect rather than whole-cartridge wear.
Quick checks
- Determine drip source: a spout drip with the handle fully off implicates the cartridge's main seal or seat; a leak at the base or handle implicates the cartridge body O-rings or the bonnet seal. These are different parts and different decisions.
- Cycle the handle through its range and note where the drip starts and stops. A drip only at partial-open often means a chipped ceramic disc or a debris-fouled seat passing water at one alignment but sealing at another.
- Check whether it is hot-side only (heat-hardened seal) and whether the water is hard (scale fouling a ceramic disc). Heat hardens elastomer seals first on the hot port, so a hot-only weep skews toward seal aging.
- Shut off and reopen the angle stops; a drip that clears after flushing debris through the valve suggests grit lodged on the seat, not worn-out sealing surfaces.
- Identify the make, model, and cartridge type before disassembly (compression seat-washer, ceramic-disc, ball, or cartridge). The valve family dictates which sealing surface to read and whether a rebuild kit or full cartridge is the right part.
Decision thresholds (replace now vs monitor)
Replace now:
- Steady spout drip with the handle fully closed that does not stop after flushing debris (worn seat or scored ceramic disc).
- Visible scoring, chipping, or pitting on the ceramic disc or sealing face when inspected.
- Internal hot/cold cross-mixing on a single-handle valve (worn cartridge body seals letting the two ports communicate).
- Hardened, flattened, cracked, or swollen O-rings/seals that no longer spring back.
- Handle that binds or grinds from a seized or scaled cartridge stem.
- Temperature creep on a pressure-balance or thermostatic cartridge (a scald-safety concern).
Monitor (clean/reseat, defer cartridge replacement):
- Intermittent weep that clears completely after flushing grit through the valve (debris, not wear).
- Sealing faces and ceramic disc inspect clean and unscored; O-rings still pliable and intact.
- Minor stiffness that frees up with cleaning and fresh silicone valve grease, with no drip.
The threshold is whether the wear is permanent (scoring, hardened seals, cross-mixing) versus reversible (debris, removable scale, dry seals). Permanent damage replaces; reversible conditions clean and monitor.
Confirming the read
- Pull the cartridge and inspect the ceramic disc/seat under good light: scoring or chips confirm replacement; a clean, smooth face supports monitor after cleaning.
- Press the O-rings: ones that stay deformed and do not rebound are spent. Pliable rings that spring back are serviceable.
- Reassemble after cleaning and a debris flush; if the drip returns immediately, the wear is real and replacement is confirmed.
- For temperature creep, verify against the valve's max-temp stop and the building hot-supply temperature; persistent creep after re-setting the limit stop confirms a worn thermostatic/pressure-balance cartridge.
Remediation
Replace with the correct cartridge for the make and model; many comebacks are caused by a near-match part that seats poorly or aligns the ports slightly off. Lubricate seals with an approved silicone faucet grease, never petroleum grease, which swells and degrades rubber. Reset the scald limit stop on single-handle tub/shower valves after a cartridge change, because the new cartridge resets the hot-stop reference and the maximum-temperature setting must be re-established by hand. For monitor-tier valves, flush debris, clean the disc and seat, re-grease the seals, and reseat; note the as-found condition for the next visit so a recurring drip is recognized as wear rather than re-cleaned indefinitely. On hard-water sites, advise that scale will shorten cartridge life and that periodic service is expected, and consider whether the whole-house water condition is driving repeated faucet failures.
Temperature creep or loss of pressure-balance on a tub/shower valve is a scald hazard, especially for children and the elderly. A cartridge showing temperature creep should be replaced and the limit stop reset, not monitored. Verify delivered hot-water temperature against safe limits after service.
