Clear a Main Sewer Line

Goal

Restore flow on a main-sewer-line blockage that's backing up multiple fixtures in a residential home. Main-line blockages distinguish themselves from branch-line clogs by affecting more than one fixture - toilet AND tub gurgle, or basement floor drain backs up when upstairs flushes. The work happens at the main cleanout, not at any individual fixture.

Prerequisites

  • Drain machine (100 ft drum machine, 5/8" or 3/4" cable) - sectional or drum type
  • Cutter heads - typically 2 - 4" for residential mains; bring a hub-cutter + a spade cutter + a chain knocker (chain knocker for root work)
  • Camera inspection system (deferred to step 5 - most clears don't need it)
  • Drop cloth, plastic sheeting (the cleanout WILL spray when opened)
  • Gloves, eye protection, knee pads
  • 60 - 90 minutes

Steps

  1. Confirm the diagnosis is main-line, not branch. Run a toilet flush + run a nearby tub simultaneously. If both back up together at the lowest fixture (usually basement floor drain), it's the main.
  2. Locate the cleanout. Most homes have an exterior cleanout near the foundation OR an interior one in the basement near the main exit. If neither is accessible, the next option is pulling the toilet - note this in the quote.
  3. Cover the area. Cleanout caps remove with backed-up water behind them; that water IS coming out, and it's nasty. Plastic sheeting + drop cloths protect the floor.
  4. Open the cleanout SLOWLY. Crack the cap with a wrench, listen for hissing (back-pressure), let water release gradually into a bucket or sump. Don't unscrew it all the way under pressure.
  5. Feed the machine. Start with the appropriate-size cable for the pipe diameter:
  • 4" residential main: 5/8" or 3/4" cable
  • 6" main (sometimes found in older homes): 3/4" cable
  1. Run the machine FORWARD at the manufacturer's recommended speed. Feed cable at the rate it wants - don't force it. Resistance changes tell you what's happening:
  • Free-running with steady advance โ†’ no blockage at that depth
  • Resistance + machine bogs โ†’ hit the blockage
  • Cable spins freely but doesn't advance โ†’ cable is curled in a void (back off and re-feed)
  1. Work through the blockage. Slowly advance + retract through the resistance area. Listen for the "break-through" - sound and resistance both change when the blockage gives way.
  2. Continue past the blockage by 10 - 20 feet to ensure full clearance.
  3. Retrieve the cable. Note what comes back on the cutter - roots, grease, paper, foreign objects. Photograph for the customer; it's the most powerful proof-of-work evidence in the trade.
  4. Camera-inspect (recommended). Most jobs benefit from a 5 - 10 minute camera pass after clearing. Identifies whether the customer needs follow-up (root infiltration, pipe damage, belly).
  5. Run water heavily to verify. Toilet flush + tub on full + a 10-minute flow at the kitchen sink. Watch for any backup elsewhere.

Verification

  • Multi-fixture run-through with no backup
  • Camera pass confirms clear pipe end-to-end (if performed)
  • Cleanout cap reinstalled with new wax/Teflon as needed
  • Customer signs field report with photos of recovered material

Troubleshooting

  • Cable won't advance past a certain point: hard stop = root mass, collapsed pipe, or foreign object. Camera-inspect to distinguish. Roots = a clearing job. Collapse / foreign = excavation quote.
  • Cable goes through but water still backs up: clog cleared but a follow-on (downstream) issue. Camera inspect to find the next blockage. Some jobs need a second pass at a different depth.
  • Water clears but problem returns within days: grease accumulation OR a pipe-shape issue (belly, offset). Camera + targeted hydro-jet OR section repair quote.

Sewage is biohazard. Wear PPE (gloves, eye protection, ideally a face shield for cleanout work). Decontaminate any tool that contacted sewage before putting it back on the truck. Disinfect the work area before leaving - the customer will walk through it.
