Cleared the Main, Now a Fixture Trap Issue Appears: Two-Fault Decision Tree

Why this matters

You cleared a main-line stoppage and the house drains again, but now a single fixture gurgles, loses its trap seal, drains slowly on its own, or smells. While the main was blocked, the whole system backed up uniformly and no single fixture's local defect stood out. Restore full main flow and a fixture-level fault (a partial branch clog, a vent problem, a damaged trap, a S-trap or self-siphoning configuration) is suddenly the only thing throttling that fixture. This is a two-fault job. Recognizing it keeps you from re-rodding the main that is already clear and points you at the branch or trap that needs attention.

Symptom presentation

After the main is cleared:

  • One fixture still drains slowly while everything else flows fine.
  • One fixture gurgles or loses its trap seal each time it drains, or when an adjacent fixture is used.
  • Sewer odor localized to one fixture or one room.
  • A fixture that "always was a little slow" is now obviously the lone problem because the masking main blockage is gone.

The shift from a whole-house symptom to a single-fixture symptom is the diagnostic key. The main fault is solved; a branch or trap fault remains.

Quick checks

  1. Run only the suspect fixture and time the drain. Compare to a known-good fixture on a different branch. A lavatory should clear a full basin in roughly 10 to 15 seconds; a tub at full flow should keep up with the spout. A fixture that lags badly while its neighbors flow is the lone fault.
  2. Watch the trap during and after the drain: does it gurgle, does the seal drop, does it back up locally? Standing trap water should sit at the weir and stay there after the drain completes.
  3. Pour a cup of water into a suspect-smelling fixture; if odor stops within a minute, it was a dry or siphoned trap, not a vent leak at a joint.
  4. Inspect the trap and trap arm for a partial branch clog, a sagging or S-trap configuration, or physical damage. Feel the trap arm slope; a back-pitched arm holds debris and re-clogs.
  5. Note whether the symptom appeared only after the main was cleared. That timing is the signature of an unmasked second fault, not a new problem your cabling created.

Isolation tree

Branch A: single fixture drains slow, others fine.

  • Partial clog in that branch or trap. Snake the branch from the fixture or its local cleanout. This is a branch job, not a main re-rod.

Branch B: single fixture gurgles and loses trap seal.

  • Vent fault on that fixture's branch (blocked, missing, or wet-vent overload), unmasked now that flow is full. Check and clear the local vent; verify trap-arm length and the vent takeoff above the trap weir.

Branch C: an adjacent fixture burps when the suspect one drains.

  • Shared/common vent starvation on that branch. Confirm the common vent path is open.

Branch D: localized odor, trap holds water.

  • Broken or disconnected vent or a cracked trap leaking gas at a joint. Smoke-test to localize and reseal/replace.

Branch E: fixture self-siphons every drain (S-trap signature).

  • A true S-trap or an over-length unvented trap arm self-siphons. Re-pipe to a properly vented P-trap configuration.

Confirming diagnosis

  • Branch isolation: cap or stop other fixtures, run only the suspect one. Repeatable slow drain or trap loss isolated to it confirms a branch/trap fault, not a main issue.
  • Smoke or dye test the suspect branch to separate a vent leak from a dry trap and to find a hidden break. Smoke that escapes at the fixture but never reaches the roof terminal indicates a vent path that is blocked or broken below the roof.
  • Camera or rod the branch if a partial clog is suspected; you should see grease, scale, or an obstruction local to that branch, not the main. The transition from a clear main to a fouled branch on camera is the proof point.
  • Verify trap-arm developed length and slope against code limits for the pipe size; an over-length unvented arm self-siphons by design. For a 1-1/2 inch arm the developed length to the vent is tightly limited, and exceeding it produces exactly the self-siphon you are seeing.
  • Re-run the fixture three or four times in succession. A trap that holds on the first cycle but loses seal by the third indicates marginal venting that only fails under repeated demand.

Remediation

  • Partial branch clog: clear from the fixture or branch cleanout; flush and confirm full flow and trap retention. Pull and clean the trap itself if it holds debris, since a fouled trap re-collects quickly.
  • Vent fault: clear the blocked vent, or correct missing or undersized venting so the trap holds seal at full flow. Add an air admittance valve only where code permits and the device is listed, mounted above the trap arm and in an accessible, conditioned location.
  • S-trap or over-length unvented arm: re-pipe to a vented P-trap with the vent takeoff above the trap weir and the arm within code length for its diameter. An S-trap is prohibited precisely because it self-siphons; correcting the geometry is the durable fix, not a deeper trap.
  • Damaged trap or joint: replace the trap and components and reseal. Re-test by running the fixture at full flow and through several cycles, confirming no gurgle, a full trap, and no odor before closing the call.

A fixture that loses its trap seal admits sewer gas into living space. Sewer gas contains hydrogen sulfide and methane, a health hazard and, in confined areas, an ignition and asphyxiation risk. Do not close out the main-line call while a fixture trap fails to hold. Resolve the branch/vent fault and confirm trap retention before leaving.
