Clothes Washer No Cold Fill Vs No Hot Fill Decision Tree
Why this matters
A washing machine that fills only on cold OR only on hot is almost always a plumbing-side problem, not a washer-side problem - even though it presents as an appliance fault. The plumber arrives because the appliance tech told the customer it is the supply. The diagnostic separates the supply, the inlet valve screen, the inlet hose, and the wall shutoff. Misreading this as a washer board failure leads to an unnecessary appliance replacement call; treating it as a wall-side problem when the screens are clean and the shutoffs work means time spent on the wrong end. The plumber's role is isolating to the wall-side fix or confirming the appliance is at fault.
Symptom presentation
- Washer fills cold only on a warm or hot wash setting.
- Washer fills hot only and runs hot through a cold cycle.
- Mixed wash cycles with imbalanced fill.
- Washer indicates "no water" error or extends fill time.
- Customer recently added a high-efficiency washer that draws less inflow than the older unit.
Quick checks
- Confirm both supply hoses are connected and the wall shutoffs are open.
- Disconnect both hoses from the washer. Direct each to a bucket. Open the wall shutoff. Time the flow for 30 seconds. Healthy: 4 to 7 gpm at 50 psi static.
- Inspect the inlet screens at the washer inlet valve and at the hose ends. Lint, mineral, and pipe-fragment debris commonly load these screens.
- Note the washer type. Top-load with mechanical timer, top-load HE, front-load HE, smart-board controlled. HE washers are more sensitive to low inlet pressure.
- Identify recent plumbing work. A washer that worked fine until a repipe or pressure-regulator change may have inlet-screen debris from the work.
Isolation tree
Step 1: Wall shutoff function. Disconnect the hose. Open the shutoff fully. Confirm full-flow stream. If flow is weak from the wall, the issue is upstream of the shutoff (the supply line) OR the shutoff itself is partially closed.
For a single-handle washer shutoff (Watts FloodSafe, SharkBite Washing Machine Outlet Box): verify the handle is full open. Some have a return-spring that re-closes if the handle is not fully latched.
Step 2: Hose obstruction. Hold the hose disconnected and run water at the wall. Then connect the other end to a bucket and run again. Reduced flow with the hose attached vs free flow = obstruction or kink in the hose. Stainless-braided hoses with the inner rubber liner collapsed are a common find on hoses over 7 years old.
Step 3: Hose screen. Inspect both ends of each hose. Most have a brass or stainless mesh screen at the appliance end. Lint and rust accumulate and reduce flow to the washer below the trigger threshold.
Step 4: Inlet valve screen. Pull the hose off the washer inlet valve. Inspect the screen in the valve port. If loaded, clean. If the screen is damaged or missing, debris has entered the valve and the valve may be at fault.
Step 5: Washer pressure switch threshold. HE washers monitor inlet pressure and flow. A washer that detects inflow below a threshold may switch to a different fill source (cold for hot, etc.) or abort. This is appliance side; document and refer to appliance tech.
Step 6: Single-side outage. If cold fills but hot does not, AND hot is healthy at the wall, the inlet valve hot-side coil may be failed (appliance side). Plumber's check is to verify the hot side at the wall is identical to the cold side at the wall.
Confirming diagnosis
Confirmed when:
- Bucket flow test at the wall confirms or rules out a supply-side issue.
- Hose-only test rules out hose obstruction.
- Inlet screen inspection identifies a loaded screen as the cause.
- Both sides tested independently to confirm which is symptomatic.
- After cleaning or replacement, washer fills both sides within the OEM time-to-fill spec.
Remediation
By cause:
- Closed or partially closed wall shutoff: Open fully. Replace single-handle outlet box if the spring-return is failing or the handle does not latch.
- Old rubber-lined hoses with collapsed liner: Replace with stainless-braided burst-protected hoses. NSF/ANSI 61 certified, with washer-machine specific elbow fittings if the install is tight.
- Loaded inlet hose screen: Clean screen, reinstall. Flush wall supply for 30 seconds before reconnect.
- Loaded washer inlet valve screen: Clean and reinstall.
- Damaged valve screen (missing or torn): Replace screen. If debris has entered the valve, refer to appliance tech.
- Supply pressure too low for HE washer: Verify static pressure at the laundry. Most HE washers spec 20 to 120 psi. If below 20 psi, investigate house pressure (PRV setting, supply restriction).
- Galvanized supply lines feeding the laundry box: Internal corrosion of galvanized steel branches reduces effective ID. Repipe with copper or PEX.
Flood-safe washer hoses (FloodSafe, SharkBite Flood Stop) with integral shutoff senses high flow and closes; a slow leak may not trigger but a burst will. Install a code-compliant pan under the washer if the laundry is on an upper floor or above a finished ceiling per local code amendment.
