Gas Line Installation and Service Reference
Why this reference exists
Many plumbers also work on natural gas + propane lines for residential appliances. Gas work is a regulated specialty - most states require a gas-fitter license or plumber license specifically endorsed for gas. Done right, gas line install is a profitable + recurring service: typical new appliance hookup, for a fuel-line reroute or expansion. Done wrong: explosion, asphyxiation, lawsuits. This reference is the working framework; not a substitute for licensed training.
Licensing + scope
Verify what your license allows in YOUR state. Typical scopes:
- Master plumber + gas endorsement: all gas piping inside home, appliance hookup
- Gas fitter (dedicated license): same scope; some states require this separate from plumbing
- Plumber only (no gas endorsement): connect appliance to existing shutoff; cannot run new pipe
- HVAC: cannot work on gas piping in most states; appliance hookup only
State + utility rules vary. Don't work outside scope; insurance + AHJ enforcement is real.
Codes
- NFPA 54 / ANSI Z223.1 National Fuel Gas Code - the primary U.S. residential gas code
- NFPA 58 for propane
- IRC Chapter 24 for residential fuel gas (mirrors NFPA 54 for most parts)

Pipe materials
Black iron pipe (most common interior):
- Threaded joints with pipe dope (gas-rated, NOT regular pipe dope)
- 1/2" to 2" residential typical
- Inexpensive + reliable
- Code-acceptable nationwide
Galvanized steel:
- NEVER for gas (zinc coating flakes off + plugs orifices)
Copper:
- Allowed in some jurisdictions for outdoor + above-ground use ONLY
- Sulfur in gas reacts with copper, creates copper sulfide flakes
- Not preferred residential
CSST (corrugated stainless steel tubing):
- TracPipe, Gastite, Wardflex
- Flexible, faster install than black iron
- Bonding required (NEC 250.104) for lightning protection
- Premium cost but premium install speed
- Requires manufacturer training + certification
Polyethylene (PE):
- Underground service only
- Yellow color
- 80-100 ft from house to meter typical scope
- Anodeless risers at termination
Aluminum + plastic: NEVER for gas (general rule).
Sizing
Gas pipe sizing per NFPA 54 Table 6.2(a) or equivalent. Inputs:
- Total BTU demand (sum of all appliance ratings on the line)
- Equivalent length (longest run + fitting equivalents)
- Inlet pressure (typically 0.5 psi natural gas residential, 11 in WC; 2 psi propane sometimes)
- Pressure drop allowed (typically 0.3-0.5 in WC for low-pressure 0.5 psi system)
Quick rules:
- A 100,000 BTU furnace at 50 ft: 3/4" black iron typical
- A 36,000 BTU water heater at 30 ft: 1/2" black iron
- A 500,000 BTU large home (furnace + dryer + range + heater): may need 1" or 1.25" trunk
Undersized pipe = pressure drop at appliance = combustion problems + safety risk.
Pressure tests
After install (BEFORE turning gas on):
- Cap or plug all openings
- Pressurize to 1.5x working pressure OR 3 psi minimum
- Hold for time required by AHJ (typically 15 minutes to 24 hours, depending on system size + jurisdiction)
- No pressure drop = pass
- Soap-test each joint for leak verification
- Document for inspector + customer
A failed pressure test means leaks. Find + fix; don't shortcut.
Appliance connection
Each appliance:
- Shutoff valve within 6 ft of appliance (NFPA 54 6.4.4)
- Sediment trap / drip leg before appliance (where required)
- Appliance flex connector (steel, listed) OR direct hard pipe
- Union for service
Sediment trap: tee + nipple + cap going DOWN from gas line. Catches debris from settling. Required for some appliances (gas water heater, furnace) per most codes.
Venting (for service tech)
Gas appliances need combustion air + exhaust:
- B-vent (Type B double-wall): older gas appliances, atmospherically vented
- PVC vent (high-efficiency condensing equipment): 2-3" PVC, sealed combustion
- Concentric vent (PVC inside PVC for sealed combustion + intake)
- Direct vent (through-wall horizontal or vertical)
Vent installation rules per appliance manual + code. Vent termination clearances (from windows, doors, intakes, grade) per code.
Pressure regulators
House meter: utility-provided, regulates from utility main pressure down to residential 0.5 psi (or 2 psi for some systems).
Appliance regulator: at each appliance, regulates from system pressure to manifold pressure (typically 3.5 in WC natural gas, 11 in WC propane).
Two-stage propane: tank regulator (high-to-medium pressure) + house regulator (medium to low). Many tank installations.
Regulator inlet + outlet pressures verified at startup + annually.
Combustion testing (gas appliances)
Annual service (combined plumbing + HVAC role):
- Manifold pressure verified (3.5 in WC natural; 11 in WC propane)
- Combustion analysis: CO2 7-9%, CO < 100 ppm, draft per appliance
- Flame visual: blue with slight yellow tips
- Heat exchanger inspection
- Gas leak test at fittings (soap or electronic)
Common service work
New appliance install + gas line extension:
- typical
- Includes shutoff, flex connector, pressure test
- More for long runs or wall penetrations
Gas line reroute (kitchen remodel, basement finish):
- Includes permit, materials, leak test, inspection
- Plus connection to all appliances on the line
Outdoor BBQ / firepit gas line:
- Includes underground PE pipe + transition + quick-connect
- Permit usually required
Pool heater gas line (large BTU):
- Often requires 3/4" or 1" line
- depending on distance
Whole-house propane conversion (from natural gas):
- Each appliance manifold orifice changed
- New tank install separately ( incl. tank lease vs purchase)
- Less common; natural gas usually preferred
Common pitfalls
- Wrong pipe dope: regular pipe dope dissolves in gas; use gas-rated only
- Galvanized pipe: flakes plug orifices
- No sediment trap: orifices clog over years
- Pressure test skipped: leaks discovered by customer = bad
- CSST without bonding: lightning strike = pipe burn-through (well-documented incidents)
- Wrong size on long run: pressure drop, combustion problems
- No permit: AHJ red-tags work, customer must pay to redo
Leak detection
Customer reports gas smell: evacuate + no ignition sources, call gas company FIRST if odor strong, soap solution on suspected joints, electronic combustible gas detector (), SHUT GAS at main, repair, pressure test before restoring.
Safety considerations
Combustible gas detector required. Shut gas + verify zero before opening line. Ventilate. No smoking, open flame, or electrical switching in work area. CO detector verified operational. Two-person for major repairs.
