Hot Water Fine One Fixture Cold Cross Connect Decision Tree
Why this matters
When every fixture in a house gets hot water except one, the water heater is fine and the supply is fine; the fault lives at that single fixture or its branch, very often a cross-connection bleeding cold into the hot side. A cross-connection at a mixing valve or a failed cartridge lets cold water short-circuit into the hot line, so the one fixture runs cold while pressure quietly equalizes both ways and nothing visible leaks. Misreading this as a heater or distribution problem sends the tech to the wrong end of the house and burns an hour at the tank that is working fine. The other failure family is a plain delivery block: a closed stop, a scaled riser, or a corroded hot branch that simply is not getting hot water to the valve. The two look identical at the spout but split cleanly on one test, whether the hot riser is hot at the angle stop. The tree below isolates the fixture, tests for a crossover with directional stop tests, and verifies the hot supply actually reaches the fixture stop, so you find the cold-water bleed or the blocked hot riser instead of chasing the tank.
Symptom presentation
The customer reports one specific fixture, often a tub-shower or a single-handle faucet, that runs cold or barely warm while every other hot tap in the house is fine. The water heater recovers normally and other fixtures prove it. The defining condition is that the problem is confined to one fixture, which localizes the fault to that fixture's valve, cartridge, branch, or a crossover at that point, and rules out the heater and the main hot distribution.
Quick checks
- Confirm other hot fixtures run fully hot to establish the heater and main distribution are good.
- At the affected fixture, feel the hot supply riser temperature at the angle stop with the fixture running hot; a cold riser means hot is not arriving, a hot riser means the fixture valve is the problem.
- Check the fixture for a single-handle mixing cartridge or a pressure-balance or thermostatic valve, the usual crossover suspects.
- Test for crossover: shut the cold angle stop to the fixture and open the hot; if hot still will not flow or stays cold, hot is not reaching the valve.
- Shut the hot stop and open the cold and the hot tap; if water still flows from the hot side, cold is crossing over into the hot line.

Branch A: Hot riser is cold at the stop
Hot water is not reaching the fixture.
- Partially closed or failed hot angle stop: open fully or replace.
- A scaled or kinked hot riser to the fixture restricts or blocks hot flow.
- A blocked hot branch serving only that fixture, from a solder slug, debris, or corrosion.
Branch B: Hot riser is hot but the fixture runs cold, crossover suspected
Hot arrives at the valve but cold dilutes it inside the fixture.
- Failed single-handle mixing cartridge: a worn or cracked cartridge lets cold cross into the hot internally, so even on full hot the output is cold or lukewarm. Replace the cartridge.
- A failed pressure-balance or thermostatic cartridge stuck toward cold.
- Confirm the crossover with the shut-stop test: with the hot stop closed and the cold open, water flowing from the hot outlet proves cold is crossing through the valve.
Branch C: Crossover located away from the fixture
The cross-connection is in the branch, not the fixture.
- A tub-shower diverter or a transfer valve cross-connecting hot and cold lets cold pressure overpower the hot branch.
- An old combination stop-and-waste or a hose-bib mixing setup tying hot and cold.
- Isolate by closing fixture stops upstream and watching whether the cold bleed into the hot side stops.
Branch D: Thermostatic or anti-scald limit set wrong
The fixture is delivering by design, just cold.
- A scald-guard or thermostatic mixing valve set or rotated to a low limit caps the hot output. Adjust the rotational limit stop or the mixing setpoint per the manufacturer's procedure.
Confirming diagnosis
Confirm with the directional crossover tests. With every fixture closed and the affected fixture's hot stop open and cold stop shut, hot should flow hot; if it does not, the hot supply to the valve is blocked, sending you to Branch A. With the hot stop shut and the cold stop open and the hot tap opened, no water should come from the hot outlet; if water flows, cold is crossing into the hot side through the valve, confirming Branch B or C. Reading the hot riser temperature at the angle stop while another hot fixture proves the main hot is up cleanly separates a delivery block from an internal crossover. Once the cartridge is replaced or the riser cleared, the affected fixture should match the rest of the house.
Remediation
- Closed or failed hot stop: open fully or replace the angle stop. A stop that has not moved in years may not reopen fully and is better replaced than forced.
- Scaled or blocked hot riser or branch: clear or repipe the restricted section. Hot-side galvanized scales faster than cold, so a hot-only block on old galvanized usually means repiping that branch, not flushing it.
- Failed mixing or pressure-balance cartridge: replace the cartridge with the correct part for the valve body. Mismatched cartridges seat poorly and re-create the crossover, so confirm the exact valve series before ordering.
- Branch crossover at a diverter or transfer valve: repair or replace the cross-connecting valve. A worn tub-shower diverter that no longer seats lets cold overpower the hot branch whenever the cold side carries more pressure.
- Anti-scald limit set low: reset the rotational limit stop or thermostatic setpoint to a safe usable temperature per the manufacturer's procedure, balancing scald protection against usable hot delivery.
- After repair, run the fixture and confirm full hot, then re-verify no crossover with the shut-stop test: hot stop closed and cold open should yield no flow from the hot outlet.
