Hydrojet Sewer + Drain Cleaning

Why this matters

Hydrojetting (high-pressure water jet) is the gold-standard drain cleaning method - clears what a snake can't (grease, scale, root mats), restores pipe to near-original diameter, + leaves pipe walls clean instead of just punched through. Customer cost. Margin: 65 - 80% on materials + tooling amortization. The plumber who jets clears the pipe in 30 minutes that the rooter guy spent 3 hours cabling + still has a callback in 6 weeks.

What hydrojetting does

A pump delivers water at 1,500 - 4,000 PSI through a flexible hose terminating in a multi-jet nozzle:

  • Forward jets cut + flush debris
  • Rearward (propulsion) jets pull the hose forward + flush behind
  • Net effect: nozzle self-advances + scours pipe wall as it goes
  • Water + debris flush back to cleanout

Vs a cable snake, hydrojet:

  • Cleans full pipe diameter (cable cleans a hole through the blockage)
  • Cuts grease, scale, sludge that cable can't grab
  • Cuts soft roots; harder roots need cable first OR specialty nozzle
  • Doesn't require contact angle for cutting

Equipment

  • Trailer-mount: 8 - 40 GPM @ 2,000 - 4,000 PSI, engine-driven, 250 - 500 ft hose reel, 200 - 500 gal tank. For residential mains + commercial sewers.
  • Cart: 4 - 8 GPM @ 1,500 - 3,000 PSI, electric or small gas, 150 - 300 ft hose. Residential interior lines, sinks, tubs.
  • Mini-jet: 1.5 - 4 GPM @ 1,000 - 2,000 PSI, 50 - 100 ft hose. Kitchen sinks, lav drains, condensate lines.

Nozzles: flusher (0° + rear jets, standard cleaning), penetrator (forward jet cuts blockage, follow with flusher), root cutter / chain knocker (rotating head for tough roots), pipe cleaner (tight grouping for wall scour), camera nozzle (integrated inspect-while-clean).

When hydrojet vs cable

Hydrojet wins:

  • Grease in kitchen line
  • Scale in old galvanized OR cast iron
  • Soft tree roots in 2 - 6" lateral
  • Sludge in commercial drain
  • Pre-camera inspection cleanup
  • Recurring clog at same location

Cable wins:

  • One-time hairball / paper / object blockage
  • Hard roots that need cutting
  • Cast iron with offset joints (jet hose snags)
  • Pipe with collapsed section (jet won't pass)

Both used together:

  • Camera scope first → determine blockage type
  • Hard roots: cable cuts, then hydrojet flushes
  • Heavy grease: hydrojet cuts, cable verifies path clear

Procedure (typical residential 4" main line)

Pre-job:

  1. Locate cleanout (front yard cleanout, basement floor cleanout, or roof vent)
  2. Inspect cleanout fitting condition (corroded fittings can blow out under jet pressure)
  3. Set up water source: customer's outside hose bib (verify flow + pressure) OR trailer tank
  4. Position machine, run discharge hose to drain or sump
  5. Run camera scope first if customer wants documentation

Setup:

  1. Connect water supply to pump inlet
  2. Connect jet hose to pump outlet
  3. Insert hose + nozzle through cleanout, 5 - 10 ft into pipe
  4. Set pressure (start at 2,000 PSI for residential 4" main)
  5. Start pump + verify water flow

Jetting:

  1. Activate jet - nozzle self-advances on rearward jets
  2. Feed hose by hand at controlled rate (5 - 10 ft/min)
  3. As nozzle hits blockage, slow feed; let jets cut
  4. When clear, advance through to next blockage OR full length
  5. At maximum reach, retract slowly - return pass scours pipe wall
  6. Repeat passes (typically 2 - 3 full-length passes for thorough clean)

Verification:

  1. Camera scope after final pass
  2. Run customer's interior fixtures to verify flow
  3. Inspect cleanout flange + sewer line for leaks created by jet pressure
  4. Cap cleanout

Safety

Water pressure: 2,000+ PSI cuts skin + causes severe injection injuries. Never point at anyone; hold hose with both hands; expect reactive force at nozzle; wear jet-rated cut-resistant waterproof gloves.

Pipe pressure: jet can damage degraded pipe (terra cotta, Orangeburg, eroded cast iron). Camera-scope old systems first; reduce pressure on suspect pipe; stop if burst suspected.

Cleanout blowback: water + debris flies back at operator; face flange away at startup; wear face shield + raincoat-grade waterproof; establish flow direction before pressurizing.

Property protection: drop cloth from cleanout to discharge drain; black water discharge to lawn/driveway is messy; use containment indoors; truck-mount with discharge tank when no nearby drain.

Customer education

The post-jet conversation:

  • "We removed [grease / roots / scale] from your line. Pipe is now clean."
  • "Without changes to [usage / vegetation], buildup returns in [3 - 12 months]."
  • "Recommendation: [annual jet / root treatment / change kitchen habits / sewer liner install for tree roots]."
  • "Camera shows pipe condition [good / declining / failing]; here's what's needed."

Customers without education return for emergencies; educated customers buy maintenance + don't call angry when the clog returns.

Camera-jet integration

The combined service:

  1. Customer's drain clogged
  2. Tech runs camera first
  3. Documents condition, location, type of blockage
  4. Recommends approach (cable, jet, repair)
  5. Performs cleaning
  6. Post-clean camera (proof of job)
  7. Records video + provides to customer

Adds to ticket; converts more customers to repairs needed.

The single highest-value habit in hydrojetting is the CAMERA-JET-CAMERA WORKFLOW - scope before, jet, scope after. Customer SEES the dirty pipe before, sees the clean pipe after, + has video evidence to compare next year. Conversion rate to recurring service contract: 40 - 60% on customers who see the video. Without the video, the customer can't appreciate what they paid for + closing rate on annual service drops to 10 - 15%. The camera is the proof; the jet is the work; the video is the closer.
