Why this matters
One fixture that will not drain has three very different root causes, and they point to three very different jobs. A local clog in the trap or branch is a 20-minute snake. A blocked or undersized vent is a venting fix that no amount of snaking will solve. A collapsed or bellied line is excavation or relining. Diagnosing which one you have before you spend an hour cabling a drain that is actually airbound, or before you quote a dig on a pipe that just has a hair clog, is the difference between a profitable call and a callback. The isolation hinges on a few cheap observations: does it gurgle, does it back up to other fixtures, and does a camera find a wall.
Symptom presentation
The fixture drains slowly or not at all. Read the texture: a clog drains slowly then suddenly clears with a glug as the blockage breaks. A vent problem drains slowly with persistent gurgling, glug-glug air noise, and often a sucked-dry trap and sewer odor afterward, the water races out then chokes for air. A collapse drains slowly and never fully recovers, the same restriction every time regardless of what you pull out, and the camera finds the obstruction.
Quick checks
- Listen for gurgling. Persistent glugging at this or a nearby fixture as it drains is the signature of a venting problem, not a clog.
- Check trap seal after draining. A fixture whose trap is siphoned dry (and then smells) points at a vent problem (self-siphonage from inadequate venting).
- Test isolation. Does only this fixture back up, or do nearby fixtures gurgle/back up when this one drains? Cross-fixture symptoms point past the branch toward a shared drain or vent.
- Cable the branch. A snake that hits and clears a local obstruction names a clog; a snake that runs clean but the drain still fails points to vent or slope/collapse.
Isolation tree
- Is it isolated to one fixture or shared? One fixture only, others fine, points to that fixture's trap or branch. Multiple fixtures involved points to a shared branch, stack, vent, or main.
- Snake the trap and branch. Cable the fixture drain. Pulling out a clog (hair, grease, debris) that restores flow confirms a local clog. Done.
- Snake runs clean but still no drain. The branch is clear but water still backs up or drains poorly. Now split vent from slope.
- Vent test. Persistent gurgling, a trap that siphons dry, and water that drains fine in short bursts but chokes on a sustained flow point to a blocked or inadequate vent. Confirm by removing the trap-arm cleanout or pouring while listening at the vent; a vent obstruction (debris, ice, nest, or a never-installed vent) starves the drain of air. Adding air, by cracking a nearby cleanout, that suddenly lets it drain freely is a positive vent test.
- Slope / belly / collapse. The same restriction returns regardless of cabling, the camera shows standing water (a belly) or a broken/offset/collapsed pipe, or roots. A line that drains then refills to a standing level is a belly; a line the camera cannot pass is a collapse or major offset.
- Camera and locate. Run the camera through the cleared branch. A clean, properly sloped pipe exonerates the line. Standing water, a crack, roots, or a wall confirms slope failure or collapse and marks its location and depth for the repair.
Confirming diagnosis
Each cause has a clean confirming test. Clog: cabling pulls out the obstruction and flow returns and stays. Vent: introducing air (cracking a cleanout or clearing the vent) immediately restores free drainage, and the symptom is the gurgle/dry-trap signature rather than a physical blockage in the branch. Collapse/belly: the camera is decisive, showing standing water, a broken or offset joint, root intrusion, or a wall the head cannot pass, with a locate giving position and depth. The trap to avoid is repeatedly snaking a vent or slope problem; if the cable comes back clean but the fixture still fails, stop cabling and camera the line before quoting more drain cleaning.
Remediation
- Local clog: clear with the appropriate cable or auger; for grease, follow with a hydro-flush; advise a strainer to prevent recurrence.
- Vent blockage or deficiency: clear the obstructed vent from the roof, or correct an inadequate/missing vent (re-vent the fixture, add an auto-vent only where code permits, or re-route to a properly sized vent).
- Belly or collapse: spot-dig and replace the failed section, or trenchless point-repair/reline per the pipe condition, depth, and access; correct the slope so it does not recur.
- Roots: cut and clear, then address the entry point with a liner or joint repair so they do not regrow.
The drain-texture fingerprint
Senior techs read the way water leaves the fixture before they touch a cable, because the texture names the cause. A pure clog drains slowly, then breaks loose all at once with a glug as the obstruction clears and the water races away clean afterward; it is a one-time event, not a recurring choke. A venting problem drains in a stutter: the water starts, then the drain chokes for air with a glug-glug as it pulls the trap toward empty, and the fixture often gurgles when a neighboring fixture discharges. The trap left half-siphoned and the sewer odor that follows are the giveaways that air, not water, is the limiting factor. A slope or collapse problem drains to a fixed standing level and stops there every single time, with the same restriction no matter what you pull out, because the pipe geometry itself, a belly holding water or a wall the flow cannot pass, is the limit. Matching the texture to the cause keeps you from cabling a vented-starved or collapsed line for an hour when the cable was never going to fix it. When the texture says vent or collapse, put the cable down and reach for the camera or the vent stack.
Sewer-side work exposes you to sewer gas and pathogenic wastewater. Use eye and hand protection and ventilate confined spaces; a fixture whose trap siphons dry is venting sewer gas into the occupied room, so prioritize restoring the trap seal and correcting the vent. Never cap or eliminate a required vent to "fix" a drain; that converts a slow drain into a sewer-gas and siphonage hazard.
