PEX-A Vs PEX-B Vs Copper Repipe Decision Matrix

Why this matters

When the customer is going to repipe a whole house or a major section, the choice between PEX-A, PEX-B, and copper drives both install cost and long-term performance. None is universally best. PEX-A has stretch-memory and fewer fittings; PEX-B is cheaper and uses standard crimp; copper has the longest history and a code-required role in some jurisdictions and applications. Pick the one that fits the install constraints, the local code environment, and the customer's value horizon.

The three options

PEX-A: Cross-linked polyethylene by the Engel method. Most flexible, lowest memory at crimp, expansion-fitting installs (no internal restriction). Brand examples: Uponor (formerly Wirsbo), Rehau.

PEX-B: Cross-linked polyethylene by the silane method. Stiffer than PEX-A, more chlorine-resistant per ASTM testing, lower cost. Brand examples: Viega PureFlow, SharkBite, Apollo.

Copper: Type L (residential interior) or Type M (lower pressure, residential interior, code-dependent). Sweat, press, or push-to-connect joints.

When PEX-A wins

  • Tight retrofit routes where flexibility through framing matters (long runs around obstacles).
  • Installer comfort with expansion-fitting tool; the full-port expansion fittings have no internal restriction.
  • Freeze recovery: PEX-A's stretch-memory allows a frozen line to expand without immediate split, then return to shape after thaw (no guarantee, but it survives freezes that crack PEX-B and copper).
  • New construction homerun-manifold systems (PEX-A's flexibility shines in long manifold runs).
  • High-end residential or where the contractor wants the strongest material choice for warranty defense.
  • Recirculation loops at elevated sustained temperatures (PEX-A oxidative stability at high temp).

Field considerations:

  • Expansion tool required (Milwaukee, Uponor ProPEX tool). Higher tool investment.
  • Cold-weather work: expansion fittings need to be relaxed before they shrink back; some installers find this slow at low ambient.
  • Material cost is the highest of the three plastics; per-foot price varies by brand.

When PEX-B wins

  • Cost-sensitive whole-home repipe.
  • Crew already trained on standard crimp ring tooling (cheaper, faster on small jobs).
  • Hot water recirc that doesn't run at extreme temperatures.
  • Standard residential pressure and temperature ranges.
  • Replacement of CPVC or PVC where the connection method is similar.

Field considerations:

  • Crimp ring tool (Milwaukee, Apollo) is cheaper than expansion tool.
  • Crimp connections have internal restriction (fitting ID smaller than tubing ID); not a problem on most residential, but adds to system head loss on long runs.
  • Cinch / clamp method (stainless cinch clamps) is also common with PEX-B; even cheaper tool, slightly weaker connection.
  • Better chlorine resistance per ASTM F876 testing; some literature claims longer life on chlorinated municipal supplies.

When copper wins

  • Jurisdiction requires copper in specific locations (some inspectors still call PEX in floor / wall transitions).
  • Outdoor exposure (PEX degrades under UV; copper does not).
  • Mechanical room piping where the look matters and the install is visible to the customer.
  • High-temperature work (commercial boilers, recirc at 140 F+ sustained).
  • Long-term homeowner value preference: "I want it done with what it's been done with for a hundred years."
  • Hot water supply to fixtures where stiff support is needed (e.g., utility room manifolds).
  • Service entrance from meter to PRV - many jurisdictions require copper at the meter and at the entrance.

Field considerations:

  • Significantly more labor than either PEX option.
  • Material cost depends on copper market; can fluctuate 30 to 50% year over year.
  • Sweat joints require dry pipe and proper flux/solder; press joints are faster but tool investment is significant.
  • More skill required for clean, leak-free joints.
  • Lifetime: properly installed copper outlasts both PEX options by decades.

Cross-cutting requirements

Local code:

  • IPC and IRC both approve PEX (P2906); local amendments vary.
  • Some jurisdictions restrict PEX to certain locations; check before committing.
  • Some lenders or inspectors flag PEX on older homes; document for the customer.
  • Copper-only zones: hot mechanical rooms, exterior runs, near meters per some jurisdictions.

Pressure and temperature ratings:

  • PEX-A and PEX-B both rated 160 psig at 73 F; derated at higher temperatures.
  • Copper Type L: 1,300+ psig at room temperature for typical sizes.
  • All three meet residential water supply requirements with margin.

Hot water temperature limits:

  • PEX-A typically rated 200 F at 80 psig; derated above.
  • PEX-B typically rated 180 F at 100 psig; derated above.
  • Copper has no plastic limits but joints can fail at high cycle counts under thermal expansion.

Chlorine exposure:

  • Municipal chlorinated water can degrade PEX over decades; ASTM F876 sets standards.
  • High chlorine residuals (3+ ppm) accelerate degradation.
  • Some jurisdictions on heavily chlorinated water require longer PEX lifespan testing.

UV exposure:

  • PEX (any) degrades rapidly in UV. Cover, sleeve, or use copper for any sun-exposed run.
  • Even attic runs through a non-darkened access can degrade.

Decision flow

Ask in this order:

  1. What does local code require for this install location?

    • Copper required: copper.
    • PEX restricted: copper.
    • Either approved: continue.
  2. Where is the install?

    • Sun-exposed or UV-risk run: copper.
    • Mechanical room, conditioned space: PEX-A or PEX-B.
    • Inside walls / floors: PEX-A or PEX-B (or copper if customer prefers).
  3. What's the freeze risk?

    • High (cold climate, exterior wall runs): PEX-A best, PEX-B acceptable, copper worst (cracks).
    • Low: any.
  4. What's the install crew trained on?

    • Expansion fittings: PEX-A.
    • Crimp rings: PEX-B.
    • Sweat or press: copper.
  5. What's the customer's budget and value horizon?

    • Long-term, value-focused: copper (lifetime), PEX-A (longest plastic).
    • Mid-range: PEX-B.
    • Budget: PEX-B with crimp rings.

Common selling and install mistakes

  • Selling PEX-B at a tankless recirc loop running 140 F+ continuously. The PEX-B may meet code on paper but life expectancy is reduced; PEX-A better for that duty.
  • Skipping the proper deburr on copper sweat - leaks within 5 years from flux residue.
  • Crimping PEX-B with a worn ring; the joint visually looks fine and leaks at 6 months.
  • Routing PEX through a sunny attic or exterior crawlspace without UV protection.
  • Mixing brands of PEX with brands of fittings - some are cross-compatible, others are not. Check compatibility per ASTM F1807 / F2080 ratings.
  • Using sweat copper where dry pipe is impossible - get a press tool or use SharkBite for that specific connection.
