Septic System Basics

Overview

Septic systems serve homes outside municipal sewer service - about 20 % of U.S. homes. Plumbing techs need to recognize septic-system installations + understand how their work affects them. A garbage disposal heavy-use in a septic-equipped home overloads the system; a backflow event signals tank or drainfield issues. This reference is the in-truck understanding so techs don't accidentally damage a customer's septic system.

Tank sizes (residential):

  • 1 - 2 bedroom: 750 - 1,000 gallon
  • 3 bedroom: 1,000 - 1,250 gallon (most common)
  • 4 bedroom: 1,250 - 1,500 gallon
  • 5+ bedroom: 1,500 - 2,000 gallon

Pumping interval: every 3 - 5 years for typical residential use. Heavy use (more occupants, frequent disposal use) shortens this.

Materials

Most modern residential tanks are concrete OR plastic / polyethylene. Older homes may have steel tanks (corroded out + needing replacement by now) OR fiberglass (durable, common in some regions).

Performance

Signs of a healthy septic system:

  • Drainage flows freely from all fixtures
  • No sewage smell in or near the home
  • Drainfield surface dry + grass growing healthy
  • Tank level stable (not full to overflow; not draining unusually fast)

Signs of trouble:

  • Slow drains in multiple fixtures (tank full or drainfield failing)
  • Sewage smell near the drainfield
  • Wet, soft, or unusually-green grass over the drainfield (failing drainfield)
  • Sewage backup into lowest fixtures (tank or drain line blockage)
  • Gurgling from drains during normal flow

Safety

NEVER enter a septic tank. Tanks contain hydrogen sulfide gas + lack oxygen. Confined-space entry fatalities have occurred during home-owner attempts to "check inside the tank." Refer ALL tank-interior work to a licensed septic service. From outside, you can verify pump status, check filter, observe levels - that's the safe scope.

Notes

  • Garbage disposal use is contraindicated in septic-equipped homes. Disposal-ground food solids overload the tank's solids-handling capacity, requiring more frequent pumping + accelerating drainfield failure. If a customer with a septic has a disposal, advise on minimal use.
  • Drainfield protection: nothing should drive over the drainfield (cars, vehicles, heavy equipment). Tree roots invading drainfield laterals shorten the lifespan dramatically.
  • Cleaning chemicals: drain cleaners + heavy bleach use disrupt the bacterial activity in the tank. Septic-equipped customers should be educated on chemistry restraint.
  • Pumping cadence: 3 - 5 years standard. Sticker on the tank lid OR notebook entry helps the customer track.
  • Tank replacement is a major expense. Drainfield replacement is even more. Both are highly disruptive (excavation, regulatory permits).
  • Inspections often required at home sale in many jurisdictions. Failing inspections can derail a sale.

Troubleshooting

  • Backup in the house: check the tank level first via the inspection port. Full = pumping overdue. Empty = blockage in the drain line BETWEEN house and tank.
  • Smell near drainfield: drainfield failure OR pump (if equipped) failure. Inspect the pump chamber if accessible.
  • Wet spots over drainfield: drainfield is saturating. Causes range from high water table (seasonal) to clogged laterals to undersized field.
