Sewage Smell from Sink Area

Symptom

Customer reports a strong sewer-gas smell coming from a specific sink area - kitchen, bathroom, or laundry. Distinct from the broader "smelly drain" complaint covered in the Smelly Drain Diagnostic - this one points to escaped sewer gas, which is BOTH a health hazard (hydrogen sulfide, methane) AND a regulatory issue.

Likely Causes

In order of frequency:

  • Dry P-trap under a rarely-used sink - 30 %
  • Leaking P-trap connection allowing gas escape from the side, not through the drain - 20 %
  • Air admittance valve (AAV) failed under an island sink - 15 %
  • Failed wax ring or seal at an adjacent toilet (smell migrates) - 10 %
  • Cracked drain line in the wall - 8 %
  • Missing or improperly-installed vent pipe - 8 %
  • Sewer-gas migration from a basement floor drain with a dry trap - 5 %
  • Open cleanout cap in the basement or crawl - 3 %
  • Sewer-gas backup from a failed septic system (homes on septic) - 1 %

Diagnostic Steps

  1. Run water in the sink for 30 seconds. Smell improves immediately?
  • YES → dry P-trap. Pour water into the trap; recommend customer flushes rarely-used sinks weekly.
  • NO → continue diagnosis.
  1. Smell at the sink drain itself, then at the cabinet floor below.
  • Strong at drain → biological buildup in the drain or trap; clean it.
  • Strong at cabinet floor → leak in the P-trap connection OR a leak in the drain line behind the wall.
  1. Inspect the P-trap visually.
  • Cracks, separation at the slip nuts, white drying-out residue around any joint
  • Water actively dripping (rare; usually slow seep that dries before visible)
  1. For island sinks (no wall behind), check the AAV.
  • Located under the sink usually, sometimes in an accessible compartment
  • Listen for hissing as water drains (normal AAV operation)
  • Smell at the AAV body = failed AAV (worn diaphragm)
  1. Look for adjacent fixtures + toilets.
  • Toilet base in same room → check for water staining at base (failed wax ring)
  • Tub in same room → check overflow drain (sometimes the smell source)
  1. For persistent smell with no clear local cause: smoke test the drain system OR observation under negative pressure (closing windows + running exhaust fans). Smell may come from a cracked drain in the wall.

Resolution

  • Dry trap: pour water + customer education. Free fix.
  • Leaking P-trap joint: tighten slip nuts. If joint is cracked, replace.
  • Failed AAV: replace.
  • Failed wax ring at adjacent toilet: pull toilet + replace wax ring.
  • Cracked drain line in wall: invasive repair - quote wall + drain access; customer is paying for both the repair + the drywall restoration.
  • Missing vent: code-required repair; may need a permit. Quote accordingly.
  • Open cleanout: install cap.
  • Septic backup smell: refer to septic specialist; pump tank, inspect drainfield.

Persistent sewer gas in occupied spaces is a HEALTH HAZARD beyond inconvenience. Hydrogen sulfide concentrations above 100 ppm are immediately dangerous; methane is explosive at 5 - 15 %. If the customer reports headaches, dizziness, or eye irritation along with the smell, recommend leaving the home + opening windows aggressively. Diagnose AFTER ventilation, not WHILE everyone is breathing it.

Prevention

  • Customer education on flushing rarely-used drains monthly
  • Annual whole-home inspection (see Annual Plumbing Inspection SOP) catches AAV + wax-ring issues before they smell
  • Trap primers on basement floor drains in customer's that don't get regular use
