Supply Line Bulge: Replace Now vs Monitor Condition Decision Tree

Why this matters

Flexible supply connectors, the braided-steel or reinforced-plastic lines feeding faucets, toilets, washing machines, and dishwashers, are one of the most common sources of catastrophic water damage when they fail. They sit under constant line pressure 24 hours a day, and when the inner tube degrades it can balloon and then rupture without warning, flooding a home. A tech who spots a bulge in a supply line is looking at a pre-failure indicator. The question is whether that observable condition means replace immediately or whether it is a benign feature that can be monitored. Calling it wrong in the lenient direction risks a burst-line flood; calling it wrong in the alarmist direction replaces sound lines needlessly. The condition cues are specific and readable.

Symptom presentation

Often discovered incidentally during other work: a visible swelling, blister, or balloon-like bulge in the line, sometimes accompanied by weeping at the swelling, corrosion bloom on a braided sheath, kinking, or a line under obvious tension. The customer may report no symptom at all, or a slow drip, or in the worst case is calling because a line already let go. Washing-machine and toilet supplies are the highest-volume failures because they are old, hidden, and under continuous pressure.

Quick checks

  • Visually trace the full length. A localized bulge or blister in the tube, especially on a translucent reinforced-plastic line, is the inner liner failing and pushing out where the reinforcement has thinned or split.
  • Inspect the braided sheath for broken or frayed strands and rust bloom; on steel braid, the braid is the pressure-containing layer, and broken strands let the inner tube balloon through the gap. Rust bloom under a sink or behind a washer signals moisture and accelerating braid corrosion.
  • Feel the line under pressure. A soft, ballooning, or spongy section that deforms under light thumb pressure is degraded; a firm line that does not yield is sound.
  • Check the ends and ferrules for corrosion, and the connector for age. The rubber cone washers and seals at each end harden and crack over years and are a separate failure point from the tube body.
  • Identify the application and risk exposure. A washing-machine or icemaker line behind an appliance, or a toilet/lav supply inside a vanity, fails unwatched and floods before anyone notices; the same condition on an exposed, frequently seen line is lower consequence even if the cue is identical.

Decision thresholds (replace now vs monitor)

  • Replace now:

    • Any visible bulge, blister, or balloon in the tube wall. This is the inner liner failing and is a burst precursor.
    • Broken, frayed, or rust-bloomed braid strands letting the inner tube push through.
    • Active weeping or drip anywhere along the line or at a swelling.
    • Kinked, sharply bent, or tension-loaded line (stress-cracking the liner).
    • Hardened, cracked, or deformed rubber washers/cone seals at the ends.
    • Any plastic-coupling connector showing crazing or stress whitening at the nut.
  • Monitor (no immediate replacement, recheck on next visit):

    • Smooth, firm, full-length line with intact braid and no swelling.
    • Slight, uniform flexibility consistent with a sound flexible connector and no localized deformation.
    • Cosmetic surface marks with no liner involvement and no leak.

The decisive cue is localized deformation of the tube wall. A bulge is never a monitor condition; it is the signature of imminent rupture. Uniform, firm lines with intact braid and no leak are the only true monitor case.

Confirming the read

  • Press-test the suspect section gently under normal pressure; a section that yields or balloons under light pressure confirms liner degradation.
  • Isolate and momentarily de-pressurize, then re-pressurize while watching the swelling; a bulge that pulses or grows with pressure confirms a failing wall.
  • Inspect the inner tube at a fitting if the line is being removed; a swollen, soft, or split liner inside an intact-looking braid confirms the call and shows why the external look alone can underread the danger.

Remediation

Replace any line that meets a replace-now cue with a new connector rated for the application and pressure, sized to length so it is not under tension or kinked. A line stretched bar-tight to reach a stop is stress-loaded at the ferrules and bends the inner tube at the ends; a line too long kinks where it doubles back. Choose a length that lets it curve gently from valve to fixture with slack. Prefer no-burst or reinforced connectors on washing-machine and high-risk supplies. Verify the new connection seats fully and seals with no over-tightening: over-torque cracks plastic coupling nuts and crushes the cone ferrule, creating the next leak. Hand-tight plus the manufacturer's specified additional turn is the rule, not maximum wrench force. On a monitor-tier line, document its sound condition and note it for re-inspection. Advise customers that flexible supply connectors are wear items with a finite service life and that washing-machine and toilet supplies are worth proactive replacement on aging installations, along with a quarter-turn shutoff at each so the line can be isolated quickly if it ever does let go.

A bulging or braid-compromised supply line can rupture suddenly under full house pressure and flood a structure within minutes, especially behind a washing machine or under a sink that goes unwatched. Treat any bulge as an immediate-replacement condition, not a monitor item.
