Rinnai Tankless Water Heater Error Code Diagnostic Flow
Why this matters
A Rinnai tankless water heater (RU, RUR, RUS, V-Series, RL series) displays a two- or three-digit error code on the front panel or the remote controller when a safety lockout occurs. The Rinnai service manual lists more than 40 codes, but in field practice 90 percent of no-hot-water calls present as one of eight codes. Knowing which codes indicate a customer-resolvable condition (LP supply, isolation valve, filter) versus a tech-resolvable condition (flame rod, flow sensor) versus a unit-down condition (heat exchanger, gas valve) sorts the call into one truck roll instead of two.
Read the error code correctly
Rinnai codes display in three places, in priority order:
- The unit's control board LED (single character behind the front cover; rare for end users to see)
- The MC-91-2US remote controller (typical wall thermostat, displays two digits)
- The current code is the most recent active fault; pressing the ON/OFF button twice in 5 seconds steps through the last 10 historical codes
Document the historical code stack, not just the active code. The pattern (for example, repeated 11 then 12 then 14) reveals the root cause more than any single trip.
Code 11: No ignition
The unit attempts ignition, does not detect flame, retries 3 times, then locks out.
Diagnostic sequence:
- Verify gas is on at the building meter and at the unit shutoff
- If LP, verify tank level (this is the highest-frequency call on rural LP installations)
- Measure gas inlet pressure with the unit firing: spec is 5 to 10.5 inches WC natural gas, 11 to 13.5 LP
- Open the air filter cover and inspect filter, ignition rod, flame rod
- Verify the ignition rod gap (2 to 3 mm spec on most models)
- Measure flame rod microamps; spec is above 1.5 microamps DC at steady flame
- If all checks pass, replace the flame rod (Rinnai part varies by model; check the parts schematic)
Code 12: Flame loss during operation
The unit ignites but loses flame mid-cycle.
Diagnostic sequence:
- Most common cause: dirty flame rod from condensate or combustion deposits. Clean the rod with fine emery cloth, never steel wool.
- Combustion fan filter clogged: pull the filter, inspect, rinse if it is a washable element
- Vent obstruction: pull the vent termination, inspect for bird nest, ice plug (winter), or paint overspray
- Gas valve drift: a code 12 that follows multiple code 11 attempts suggests gas valve replacement
- Ground bonding: a unit that loses flame intermittently with no other symptoms often has a poor chassis ground; verify the green ground wire is intact and the cold water inlet is bonded per local code
Code 14: Thermal fuse trip
A non-resettable thermal fuse on the heat exchanger opened due to overheat.
Diagnostic sequence:
- Heat exchanger scaled: most common on hard-water installations without a softener. Flush per Rinnai annual maintenance procedure (5 gallons white vinegar circulated for 45 minutes through the isolation valve kit).
- Inadequate water flow during firing: minimum activation flow is 0.4 gpm on most Rinnai models. A low-flow restrictor on an aerator can drop flow below the minimum, but the unit will short-cycle rather than trip 14; check for partially closed valve or kinked supply.
- Thermal fuse replacement is required after a code 14; the fuse is non-resettable. Do not jumper.
- Investigate why the fuse tripped before replacing; a replaced fuse without root cause will trip again.
Code 16: Outgoing water temperature high
The hot water outlet thermistor reads above the setpoint plus delta.
Diagnostic sequence:
- Recirculation system fault: many code 16 calls trace to a recirculation pump running with no draw, creating a closed loop that overheats the unit
- Thermistor failure: measure outlet thermistor resistance, compare to Rinnai thermistor chart for the model
- Heat exchanger scaling reducing flow through the secondary while the primary still fires
- Mixing valve installed downstream of the unit failing closed; the unit modulates but the customer never gets the water (less common but seen)
Code 25: Condensate drain blocked
Condensing models only (RU, RUR, RUS series). The condensate trap or external drain line is restricted.
Diagnostic sequence:
- Inspect the condensate trap at the bottom of the heat exchanger; clear of debris
- Inspect the external drain hose; common failure is a hose run uphill or a clog at the neutralizer if installed
- Check the neutralizer media (calcium carbonate or magnesium oxide chips); replace if the media is exhausted (the pH test should read above 6.5 at the discharge end)
- Verify the drain line slopes continuously downward at minimum 1/4 inch per foot per IPC 314
Code 33 or 34: Combustion fan fault
The fan tachometer reading is out of expected range during firing.
Diagnostic sequence:
- Combustion air intake blocked: inspect intake screen
- Vent vacuum: a long vent run with a 90-degree at the termination can exceed the unit's vent length budget; consult the model's vent table
- Fan motor failure: measure fan motor amperage during attempted start; if zero or above nameplate, replace the fan assembly
- Board output: if fan does not attempt to spin and amperage is zero, isolate to board with a known-good fan motor
Codes that require Rinnai-authorized service only
These codes indicate failures that are not field-repairable and require an authorized service contractor for warranty:
- Code 79: heat exchanger leak detected
- Code 90: combustion abnormality (CO levels out of specification)
- Code 99: heat exchanger overheat with thermal fuse intact (controller-level fault)
Do not attempt repair on these codes if the unit is in warranty; the Rinnai warranty is voided by non-authorized intervention on the listed codes.
Do not bypass any thermistor, flame rod, or thermal fuse to clear a code in the field. The Rinnai control logic depends on these sensors to throttle the gas valve; running the unit with a sensor bypassed risks heat exchanger rupture or carbon monoxide production above the 50 ppm trip threshold required by ANSI Z21.10.3.
