Toilet Runs Only After Someone Showers Decision Tree
Why this matters
A toilet that refills on its own only after a shower or a hot-water draw somewhere else in the house is almost never a bad flapper in the usual sense. The trigger is a pressure or thermal event upstream, and chasing the toilet alone wastes a callback. The real candidates are thermal-expansion pressure backfeeding through a closed system, a fill-valve that bleeds when supply pressure spikes, a refill tube siphoning when downstream demand drops the line, or a flapper that only leaks at the margin pressure swings push it past. Get the isolation order right and you fix it in one trip; get it wrong and the customer calls back the next morning after the first shower.
Symptom presentation
The customer reports the toilet "ghost flushes" or hisses to refill for ten to thirty seconds, and the giveaway is the timing: it follows a shower, a laundry fill, or a dishwasher hot cycle by a few seconds to a couple of minutes. The tank water level may be at the line or slightly below. There is usually no visible leak at the base, and the bowl is not running over. On a closed system with a backflow preventer or check valve on the service, the customer may also report relief-valve weeping at the water heater on the same events. That pairing points hard at thermal expansion.
Quick checks
Drop dye tablets or food coloring in the tank and watch the bowl without flushing for ten minutes. Dye migrating into the bowl confirms a flapper or flush-valve seat path. No dye but the valve still cycles points to the fill side or a pressure event. Check static pressure at a hose bib with a gauge: note the reading, then run the hot side hard and watch the needle. On a closed system the gauge will climb well past 80 psi as the heater fires, then bleed down, and that bleed-down is what trips the toilet. Confirm there is a check valve or PRV with built-in check on the service, which makes the system closed.
Isolation tree
Start at the dye test. If dye crosses into the bowl, the leak is at the flapper or flush-valve seat: inspect the seat for mineral pitting and the flapper for a hardened or warped sealing edge, and confirm the chain has slack so it is not holding the flapper cracked. If no dye crosses but the fill valve still pulses on hot draws, move to pressure. Gauge the static pressure and watch it during a hot cycle. If pressure climbs above 80 psi and bleeds back, you have thermal expansion on a closed system, and the toilet fill valve is acting as the path of least resistance, weeping back when pressure exceeds the valve's shutoff seat. Verify there is no functioning expansion tank, or that an installed expansion tank has lost its air charge (tap it, a waterlogged tank rings dull and full). If pressure is stable but the valve still cycles only on hot draws, inspect the refill tube: a tube pushed down into the overflow standpipe past the waterline will siphon when supply pressure drops momentarily as the shower opens, pulling the tank level down and triggering refill.
Confirming diagnosis
For thermal expansion, the confirming test is the expansion tank charge and the pressure trace together. Isolate the toilet supply at its angle stop and run the hot side again: if the heater relief valve still weeps with the toilet isolated, the toilet was a symptom of system pressure, not the cause. For a siphoning refill tube, raise the tube above the overflow standpipe rim and clip it so it discharges in air; if the cycling stops on the next hot draw, the siphon was confirmed. For a fill valve that simply cannot hold against normal pressure, isolate the toilet and cap the supply: if the valve seat itself is failed it will not matter, but if cycling only occurs under live pressure swings, rebuild or replace the fill valve.
Remediation
If the root is thermal expansion on a closed system, install or recharge a properly sized thermal expansion tank on the cold inlet to the water heater, precharged to match measured static pressure (typically 50 to 60 psi), per IPC Section 607.3 and the manufacturer's sizing. This is the durable fix and it also stops the relief-valve weeping. If static pressure exceeds 80 psi, install or correct a pressure-reducing valve per IPC 604.8 so the system runs at or below 80 psi. For the siphoning refill tube, trim and clip the tube so it discharges above the overflow rim, never submerged. For a leaking flapper or pitted seat, replace the flapper with the correct OEM profile and dress or replace the flush-valve seat. For a worn fill valve that cannot hold, replace it with a quality anti-siphon fill valve and verify the critical level marking sits above the overflow.
On a closed system, never disable or plug a water-heater temperature and pressure relief valve to stop weeping. The weeping is telling you system pressure is exceeding safe limits during recovery. Correct the expansion control; the relief valve is a last-line safety device per the appliance listing and removing its function can lead to a tank rupture.
