Trenchless Sewer Repair - Pipe Lining + Pipe Bursting

Why this matters

Trenchless sewer repair is the high-margin specialty work that separates the basic drain cleaner from the full-service plumber. Customer cost. Margins: 50 - 70% on equipment + materials. Customer pain: cracked lateral, root infiltration, collapsed terra cotta from 1950s home. Traditional fix = tearing up the lawn, driveway, sidewalk for 2 weeks; trenchless = same-day OR next-day completion with 2 small pits. The plumber who scopes + recommends trenchless captures a job the dig-and-replace contractor loses on disruption alone.

What "trenchless" means

Pipe replacement / rehabilitation without excavating the full pipe length. Two pits dug (entry + exit, 4 - 8 ft deep, 4 ft square); pipe rebuilt or replaced from one pit through to the other. Lawn, driveway, garden largely undisturbed.

Two primary techniques:

1. CIPP (Cured-In-Place Pipe) lining - fiberglass + resin sleeve cured inside existing pipe; creates a pipe-within-a-pipe.

2. Pipe bursting - old pipe is broken outward by a bursting head pulled through; new pipe is pulled in behind.

Each has applications + limitations.

When trenchless works

Pipe lining (CIPP) works:

  • Pipe is structurally intact (cracks OK; not fully collapsed)
  • Pipe alignment is reasonable (offsets up to 1.5x pipe diameter)
  • Pipe diameter remains adequate after liner (loses ~1/4" diameter)
  • Access to cleanout at both ends
  • Multiple house laterals possible (single liner can serve)

Pipe bursting works:

  • Pipe is fully collapsed OR structurally failed
  • Pipe is undersized + needs upsizing (replacing 4" with 6")
  • Soil conditions allow bursting expansion (clay, sandy, NOT rock or heavy gravel)
  • No utility crossings within 18" of pipe path
  • Pipe material is brittle (clay, cast iron, Orangeburg) - bursting easier

Trenchless DOESN'T work:

  • Pipe runs under structure (concrete slab, foundation) - bursting can crack slab
  • Heavy bedrock or buried boulders
  • Pipe has severely offset joints (> 2x diameter)
  • Pipe under shallow utilities (gas, water, fiber within 18")
  • Customer wants new pipe at a different alignment

CIPP pipe lining

Process: hydrojet pre-clean, camera-scope to confirm pipe ready, measure length + diameter, prepare fiberglass tube saturated with epoxy resin, invert or pull liner into pipe, cure with hot water/steam/UV (2 - 6 hr), robotic-cut access points at cleanouts + laterals, camera-verify smooth liner.

Liner materials: felt-fiber + epoxy (most common, 50+ yr), fiberglass + UV resin (faster cure, ~50 yr), polyester + epoxy (cheaper, ~25 yr). Liner starts ~1/4" smaller, expands to fit; final ID 4 - 6% smaller than original. Entry-level liner rig is a significant capital purchase.

Pipe bursting

Process: hydrojet pre-clean, excavate two 4 ft × 4 ft pits at endpoints, feed pulling cable from entry to receive pit, attach cone bursting head with cutting blades + new HDPE pipe behind, hydraulic-pull head through (old pipe breaks outward into soil while new pipe pulls in), connect new pipe at both ends, backfill + restore.

New pipe: HDPE (flexible, fused joints, 100 yr life) most common; PVC less common (solvent-welded, brittle). Sizing: usually same diameter; can upsize 50 - 100% depending on soil + head capacity. Tools cost (entry-level) .

Pre-job camera inspection (critical step)

Both techniques require detailed camera scope BEFORE quoting:

  • Pipe material + diameter
  • Total length + access points
  • Existing condition: cracks, root intrusion, offsets, collapse
  • Utility crossings + ground depth at intervals
  • Lateral connections (count + locations)
  • Customer cleanout locations
  • Belly / sag (low points holding water)

Provide customer with video + diagnostic recommendations:

  • Severity grade (A-clean / B-minor / C-moderate / D-replace)
  • Recommended method (clean, line, burst, replace)
  • Cost range + timeline
  • Warranty available

Warranty + risk

Liner warranty: 25 - 50 year typical from manufacturer; installer warranty 10 - 25 yr typical.

Bursting: new HDPE pipe carries manufacturer warranty (100+ yr).

Failure modes:

  • Liner: pinhole in original pipe → resin doesn't bond → leak. Pre-clean + camera prevention.
  • Bursting: blade hits utility → damages utility. Pre-locate + utility marking critical.

Insurance: most utility damage covered by contractor's liability; gas line strike is high-consequence event. State 811 / Call Before You Dig service is mandatory.

Customer education

The conversion conversation:

  • Show camera video of damage
  • Compare costs: dig vs trenchless on same job
  • Compare disruption: 2 days work + 2 small pits vs 2 weeks work + entire lawn dug up
  • Warranty term: liner 25 - 50 yr vs new pipe 50+ yr
  • Customer asks "what about future access?" - trenchless doesn't preclude future repair; can still dig if needed

The video sells the job. Without the camera, customer hears "I'll quote to fix your pipe" + has no visual proof. With the video, customer sees the problem + sees the value.

Common trenchless mistakes

  • Skipping pre-camera (liner installed over collapsed section → liner collapses)
  • Skipping pre-clean (debris pinches liner during inversion → bulges + flow restriction)
  • Underestimating bursting blade size needed (blade can't burst harder material; cable strain breaks)
  • Failing to mark utilities before bursting
  • Liner cure temperature wrong (under-cured liner = soft + degrades quickly)

NEVER quote trenchless without a complete camera inspection FIRST. Liner over a fully-collapsed section is a mistake - the liner has nothing to bond against + collapses with the pipe within months. The customer sues; the warranty doesn't cover a method-mismatch failure. The 30-minute camera inspection BEFORE the quote tells you which method (line vs burst vs dig) is appropriate + saves you from the wrong-method install. The camera is the qualification step + the proof in one move.
