Vent Tests Clear But Traps Siphon: Misleading Reading Decision Tree
Why this matters
A tech runs a smoke test or pushes a ball through the vent stack, sees clear flow to the roof, and reports the venting is good. Then the customer keeps complaining about sewer gas in the bathroom and a trap that gurgles and loses its seal after the toilet flushes. The "vent is clear" reading is one of the most misleading in drain-waste-vent work because an open, unobstructed vent stack and a properly working vent system are not the same thing. A vent can be wide open to atmosphere and still fail to protect a trap, because protection depends on where the vent connects, how far the trap arm runs, and whether the fixture is wet-vented or back-vented correctly. A clear stack confirms airflow; it does not confirm that the right air reaches the right trap at the right moment.
Symptom presentation
The complaint is sewer odor and trap seal loss: a tub, lavatory, or floor drain that gurgles when an adjacent fixture or the toilet discharges, then smells of sewer gas minutes to hours later. The vent stack passes a clear-flow check. Smoke pushed into a cleanout may even reach the roof. Yet under live flow, a downstream discharge pulls the protected trap's seal down or empties it entirely (induced siphonage), or back-pressure burps the seal (blow-back). The fixture nearest the problem often has a long trap arm or sits far from its vent connection.
Quick checks
- Run water to refill the suspect trap, then flush the nearest toilet or run the adjacent fixture. Watch the trap. A visible drop in the trap seal or audible gurgle is induced siphonage, not a blocked vent.
- Measure trap-arm developed length from trap weir to the vent connection. Compare against code limits for the pipe size (the maximum distance a trap can sit from its vent before self-siphonage risk climbs).
- Check the trap arm slope. Excess slope (more than one pipe diameter of fall across the arm) lets the trap self-siphon even with a clear vent.
Why the good reading misleads
A clear-stack reading tests the main vent's openness to atmosphere. It does not test:
- Vent connection point. If the fixture's individual vent ties in too far downstream, or the trap arm exceeds maximum developed length, the trap drains its own seal on discharge. The main stack being clear is irrelevant.
- Wet-vent overload. A wet-vented bathroom group that is undersized or wrongly arranged siphons the upstream trap when the wet vent runs full bore, even with the dry vent above it perfectly open.
- Crown-weir distance and S-trap geometry. An S-trap or a trap arm with too much fall self-siphons on every use regardless of stack condition.
- Intermittent partial blockage. A vent that passes a slow smoke test can still choke under the rapid volume of a toilet flush; the test airflow is far gentler than live demand.
Isolation tree
- Branch A: Trap loses seal on adjacent discharge, vent stack clear. Measure trap-arm length and slope against code. Over-length or over-sloped arm is the cause. Reroute the vent connection closer to the trap or add a properly located individual vent.
- Branch B: Multiple traps in one group siphon together. Suspect wet-vent arrangement or undersized common vent. Verify the group conforms to the wet-venting rules for fixture-unit load and arrangement.
- Branch C: Single isolated fixture self-siphons every use, no adjacent flow needed. S-trap or excessive arm fall. Replace with a properly vented P-trap.
- Branch D: Seal blows back (bubbles up) rather than drains down. Back-pressure, not siphonage. Suspect a partial main-stack restriction below the connection or an undersized stack venting a large discharge. Re-test the stack under full toilet-flush volume, not slow smoke.
- Branch E: Trap dries out only after days of non-use. Evaporation, not siphonage. The vent is fine; the fixture is simply unused. Trap-primer or routine fill is the fix.
Confirming diagnosis
- Induced siphonage: fill the trap, mark the seal level with a marker on the trap or a measured reading, discharge the adjacent fixture, and observe the seal drop in real time. A measurable drop in seal depth confirms the trap is being pulled, not blocked. The seal depth on a standard P-trap is roughly the rated trap-seal depth, and losing a significant fraction of it on a single adjacent discharge is the diagnostic signature of siphonage.
- Developed-length failure: tape-measure the trap arm from the trap weir to the vent connection; exceeding the code maximum for the pipe diameter confirms the vent is too far from the trap to break the siphon before the seal is pulled.
- Back-pressure: a manometer or simple water-column gauge at a downstream test tee shows positive pressure spikes during a toilet flush, confirming blow-back rather than siphonage. Siphonage is a negative-pressure event that pulls the seal down; blow-back is a positive-pressure event that pushes the seal up and out. The pressure sign distinguishes them definitively.
- Slope check: a torpedo level on the trap arm reveals excessive fall. More than about one pipe diameter of total fall across the arm lets the fixture's own discharge self-siphon the trap, independent of any adjacent fixture.
Remediation
Fix the geometry, not the stack. Relocate or add the individual vent so the trap arm falls within the maximum developed length for its size. Correct excessive arm slope to roughly one pipe diameter of total fall. Replace S-traps with vented P-traps. For wet-vent overload, re-arrange the group or upsize the wet vent per the wet-venting provisions so the upstream trap is not siphoned when the wet vent runs full. For confirmed back-pressure, clear or upsize the restricted section below the connection. Re-test by refilling each trap and cycling the heaviest adjacent fixture, including a full toilet flush; the seal must hold its depth through the discharge with no measurable drop or burp.
